Perfect but subscription price is too high

Original review: I love this timer because it’s flexible to set up any way I like, and it turns itself off. I like the wide variety of choices in chimes, bells and gongs.

UPDATE: I changed my rating from 5 stars to 2 stars. I must have bought MeditationTimerPro a few years ago and paid a $1.99 one time fee. Today, January 8, 2023, when I opened it up I got a message that they were shifting to a monthly or yearly subscription for a much higher price. Now every time I open up MeditationTimerPro I get a request for more money. To me, it is not worth a recurring fee and annoying to see this message. I already installed a different meditation app.

Why add a subscription?

Paid for MeditationTimerPro sometime ago and love it for what it is. It works perfectly, allows multiple timers, and has a nice simple interface. It has worked very well for me and I was glad to pay a one time fee.

Imagine my surprise when I opened it today — several months after the last update — and was greeted with a message that MeditationTimerPro is now a monthly/yearly subscription. I get development costs are increasing, but MeditationTimerPro seems to be steady state. Not sure I will pay the subscription cost as I don’t see the value.

Great functionality but needs a facelift

MeditationTimerPro works beautifully, and gives lots of options for customization and ways to create pre-sets that are a perfect match for my needs. However the chime and tone options are not as good as the previous version, and there's a poor range of options for the tone. Some are rather jarring which is not a great way to end my meditation. The visuals could also be greatly improved. Plain brown background is boring and "blah." Not an uplifting and inspiring way to start my day. I also imported my own background pictures into the previous version because the choices they give are limited and not very appealing. But they didn't transfer over from the free version so I have to find and enter them all again. Functionally, it's a wonderful app and I use it every day, but it would be great if you could get a good graphic designer to give it a facelift and also fix the sound options.

Mostly Works!

Using this on an iPhone 6S and love it. Very complete-seeming after reading reviews of several meditation timers. I agree that some of the sounds are utterly out of place in an app like this. Not sure who’s need is met with some and would like more chime-type options. Not a problem if that never happens. The variability and options make this great for me.

On the iPad Mini 4 MeditationTimerPro has a hard time. Either there are no chime sounds, chimes ring repeatedly, (yeah, like over and over), or it won’t run a saved/titled meditation at all. Now sometimes it does work on the iPad, but I’ve given up on that device with MeditationTimerPro. BTW, I’m not having trouble with any other app on it. Would also prefer to use MeditationTimerPro on the iPad to save on phone battery use.

So I use it on the phone. Oh, and please note: it’s true that if you don’t close MeditationTimerPro after use, it will continue to use up your battery. That said, love it.

Almost everything I’d want

After trying so many apps, this one comes the closest to what I’m looking for. I spent many years sitting Zazen in zendos and I miss the sound of the wooden Han calling us to our cushions. Having that sound available would make my home Zendo experience complete. Otherwise, this is app is wonderful in that you can program your own sequences of sounds and it records sessions to your HealthKit, but it also keeps it simple and doesn’t get caught up in a lot of extras like guided meditations, etc

Works well.

Great little app. Been using it about two weeks for daily meditation; all the functions I hoped for. Quick response from developers. Next update should have health integration. Visuals could be more interesting, but for the price I am extremely pleased. :)

Update: been using four months for daily meditation. Health app integration works seamlessly. I especially like the detailed personalization options for individual meditations. Very pleased! Defly recommend.

Update 26OCT18: MeditationTimerPro has been giving me some trouble. It’s shut off several times; I’m now running a timer as backup. Which annoyed me. So docking a star.

Almost perfect, still no doubt the best

Only issues with it for me deal with the alerts/noise.

One is that you don’t get very many options for the alerts. And some of them cut off abruptly like it’s not letting the noise play out. Think of a long gong or bell noise, just stopping all of a sudden without the gradual move into silence.

Another issue is that I use a separate app for noise or music (noise blockers usually which have to be loud) while meditating and putting up the volume on my phone for those things will put up the volume of the alerts! The solution I’ve found is to use a couple alerts that aren’t as loud. There should be a separate volume for the alert sounds within MeditationTimerPro ... MeditationTimerPro entirely should have its own separate volume.

The sound and alert issues are not deal breakers, one could and should work around them with an app as good as this one. Still the best meditation timer app I’ve found even with these problems. Please continue updating. Shouldn’t be too hard to at least expand and improve the selection of alerts.

Almost perfect

The multi-timer functionality is a great idea for various meditations lengths with a single touch (after setup of course). Like others have mentioned, the sounds could use some work, but i found some that work fine. Manually put the phone in do not disturb mode, so it would be nice if it would do that during a session. I would recommend it for anybody needing a meditation timer with more features than the built in iOS timer.

Totally customizable sessions

Obviously the bells aren’t quite the same as real bells, but as I have to do this on my own without a leader sitting there chiming away, they are good enough. You’ll find a sound or two you like well enough, and you can set different chimes for different parts of your sessions—beginning, intervals, end—at any length of time. I have about five different programs saved. Totally love it. I guess I have the paid version. I think it means I can save lots of programs and get more sounds. I’ve had this so long though I’m not really sure. Support the developers and pay. It’s worth it.

Still awesome. I think I have had this 3-4 years now. (It’s 2021).

I love all my programs with various exciting titles like: 15 min w/ bells every min, or 21 min w/bell every 3 min, or 10 min w/ start/end bells only.

You are in control of your meditation practice.

Perfect!

June 2020 Updated review: still one of my most used apps. Love that I can use my own photos. Would love new bells but cant think of any other features to add. I love MeditationTimerPro. It is extremely useful to me for many timed activities. As others have mentioned, the quality of the sounds is lower than I'd like. I'd also like the flexibly to choose one background photo rather than rotate thru several. That said... Love MeditationTimerPro!
Updated review: The recent updates in the pro version make me very happy! It's perfect.

Great meditation timer app

I originally downloaded the light version and loved it. It works great as a timer and the light version has some nice sounds to begin and conclude the meditation. I knew I wanted to purchase the full version, and I’m happy I did. Because it has more great sounds and allows me to customize more meditation cycles and times. Thank you for helping me take the time guessing out of my mediation practice, so I can focus on the meditation itself. And also thank you for making the light version accessible and have so much of the great functionality so that anyone can meditate!

Does exactly what I need

I just want an app to assist me with my Transcendental Meditation based practice. I have done this meditation practice for nearly 50 years, so I admit it has changed some with additional experience. I like MeditationTimerPro because It assists me with meditation times, using appropriate bells. There are plenty of choices in bell sounds. It keeps track of meditation in its own app, but it also transfers my dates and times to my iHealth folder. I have used several others. For my meditation practice, this has been the best by far.

Simple and good (but not perfect)

MeditationTimerPro does mostly what I need. Overall it’s a solid product that’s intuitive and clean and doesn’t try to sell you on expensive and mostly useless motivational content with outrageous monthly fees.

One problem is if I end the meditation early it won't last log my time in the Health app, so my records will be wrong. Why does it insist on completing the timed session?

I wanted to use the Apple Watch app, but it seems to be just a remote control. The chiming only occurs on the phone so you have to keep it with you anyway, which limits the usefulness of the Watch app. Can you vibrate the watch?

My favorite meditation app.

This meditation timer is simple and easy to use. I like that it offers a variety of pictures and sounds. You can set up a list of potential sessions varying in length, intervals with their sounds and different beginning and ending bells. If you want a guided meditation or chanting you can listen to any one from other sources. MeditationTimerPro does not offer teaching or guided meditations. I actually prefer it that way. You are the only one seeing your record of practice times. It does keep track of your sessions and you can write a few notes if you wish.

Excellent

I have used MeditationTimerPro for years and it’s been great. I had tried several apps before choosing this one. I like it because one can customize intervals and sounds and store a variety of settings. I started with the free version, but went to the paid version to avoid ads. There have been a couple of glitches, but the customer support has been quick to respond and fix those. Overall MeditationTimerPro has been perfect for my purposes and has exceeded my expectations. (I make no use of the images. Maybe I would if there were more mountains and lakes. )

Welcome to your Self-Discovery…

We all search for tools to guide us to ourselves. The right tools to ensure that “inner peace” doesn’t remain a pleasant refrain, only echoed by others on a similar quest. Well, friend, you’ve found one that I recommend you tuck quickly into your tool chest.

MeditationTimerPro, while simple, is just that. Everything you need to set the space and time for your inner journey, and nothing more. And why should it be? WE are the spiritual adventurers. We could even time ourselves with our own minds, but who would call us back to the here and now so pleasantly?

With graceful chimes and tones to call you back, you can expect to descend from the cloud of your Self awareness more like a raindrop on a gentle breeze than a wrench dropped by an astronaut. Customizable, saveable meditation time sessions and more await you. Delay no longer. Download this and begin your journey to the center of your heart. Trust me…it’s going to be #&€%ing incredible.

PS, pay for the no-ads. It’s worth it. You’re worth it.

Works great

I’ve had no problems with this meditation timer and I’ve been using it for years. I have a few meditations I’ve set up (with different lengths, intervals, etc.) for my typical daily/weekly routine.

The only feature that would make this timer better for me would be a “volume test”. Currently I always start a meditation so I can hear the volume level for the current bell then immediately end it if the volume is too loud or quiet. Then I adjust the volume and start again. If there were a button next to the start button for just testing the volume, that would help me.

However, MeditationTimerPro is configurable and the UI is straightforward enough for me to never want to look for another mediation app again.

The quality and variety of bells are nice.

Incidentally, I find the timer configurable enough to be useful in other practices. So I have a timer for stretching and yoga which repeatedly reminds me when to switch stretches or poses. Then a different bell signals when I’ve completed the amount of time I want to spend stretching or practicing yoga.

Really nice.

Great app, does just what I need for Samatha

Best meditation app available. I use it every day. (Almost) totally customizable, allowing you to set not only your meditation time, but also any preparation time and post-meditation period, with a variety of traditional-sounding bells and chimes that can be assigned to each phase, including up to one interval chime, during the season itself. Perfect for Samatha practice or for Zazen. My only request would be that they add the ability to assign more than one interval chime, which would be particularly useful for Vipassana practice, where you might like a notification every five minutes or so. Otherwise, I'd say it is pretty much perfect.

Simple and Elegant

I am getting back into meditating after a ten year hiatus. Goodness, has technology changed in meditation apps! I had one before that was just a timer with a bell and a way to chat with people who had just finished meditating—great app, but it is no more. I needed something that would help my meditation practice but not detract. This has nice bells, good customization, and pretty pictures you can put on the back of the timers so you see, for example, a relaxing woodlands scene before and after meditating. It doesn’t have anything you don’t need to just sit in mindfulness. If I were you, I would give it a try, then enjoy being more present to life.

Beginner meditation help

I just started meditating and my mind wanders like crazy. MeditationTimerPro is cool because it plays a Tibetan bowl sound (there are several sounds to choose from) at certain intervals (I chose every 30 seconds) during my meditation and helps me to re-center and stay grounded a little bit. I paid the $1.99 or whatever it was to upgrade to the paid version and it offers a larger selection of different sounds to play, which is nice. I recommend MeditationTimerPro.
