I was so excited to use the bins and NYCCompost . Unfortunately, after several experiences of arriving at a bin shown as available only to be unable to open it with a fully up-to-date version of NYCCompost , I have given up. It doesnโt help that the only response I ever get to my reports of problems is that I must be using NYCCompost wrong. And itโs disappointing to see that the bad app makes the garbage problem worse, as people pile stacks of scraps on top of the malfunctioning bin.

Used NYCCompost successfully several times but when I was trying to drop off today NYCCompost was reporting my device as offline even though it was working for other apps and my Bluetooth was on, and none of the bins were appearing on NYCCompost . After troubleshooting for 15 mins I ended up having to leave my compost next to the bin.

many friends with non-iOS app version have been having issues and unable to open bins!

Iโve been composting at the greenmarkets, thanks to GrowNYC. Attempted to use NYCCompost before without success. Today it worked! Great to have a 24/7 option.

I love having all time access to the compost bins, and really hope this program is a success!! Having an app to unlock the boxes is a good idea, and when my box was full, I liked that NYCCompost pointed me to a nearby option. But you know what would be even more awesome? A WATCH option. When I run out of the house with a sack of near rotting garbage, Iโd love to not have to bring, or pull out and manipulate, my phone.

Love this so excited to see but there are some bugs in NYCCompost . I was able to use the bins a few times but it suddenly stopped unlocking the bins. Iโve deleted and downloaded again a couple times but the bins around the neighborhood werenโt unlocking. But Iโm looking forward to the improvements still keeping compost bags and will try a few bins the neighborhood before giving up!

Love the composting app and the plentiful bins near me. I have no issues with NYCCompost . But the mouth of the bin is quite small to fit even a modest bag of compost in it. I usually have to shove it in, likely tearing the bag on the way in. But overall very happy with this new feature in my life.

I was initially frustrated that not every neighborhood got curbside pickup like park slope did, but there are so many bins that this is still pretty convenient.
My only wish is that NYCCompost at least counted how many times you opened a bin. Iโd love to know my impact and have a sense of how much organic waste Iโve diverted!

Major miss re: reporting a problem. If bin will not open there is no way to report problem with location. Unfortunately, bins do not always open even if they are tagged as available.

This composting idea is perfect for families living in nyc! I was so excited when I saw the new bin on the corner of the block. NYCCompost also works great and has not failed once so far. Itโs definitely recommended!

I used to drop my food scraps off every Friday at the green market but this system is even more convenient. Itโs easy to find an empty compost site and open it. A few tips - Use the foot pedal, and remember to remove fruit stickers. ๐

Iโm so excited about this. Itโs amazing that we can now drop off compost anytime. Easy to use app and incredible technology with the compost bins. I am really hopeful people use this and they stick around.

Thank you for coming up with this ingenious solution to encourage and support composting across the city. For many years I have been dropping off my compost at our beloved GrowNYC farmerโs market collection point on Saturdays but
a) they donโt take meat products,
b) itโs only once a week and
c) they leave promptly at 12 noon, which means that Saturdays at 11:50 am Iโm rushing out my door trying to make it on time.
This smart NYC compost pilot may also save my marriage as our freezer wonโt need to be filled with scraps by midweek, which terribly annoys my husband who claims we have no space for his pints of coffee ice cream. Thank you DSNY and the folks who made this project come to fruition!
Sincerely,

It is SO nice to not have to haul compost all over Brooklyn to various farmerโs markets, and instead be able to just compost in the bin up the street! Thank you for making this food waste go to good use!

Itโs awesome to see something like this in the neighborhood! No more full trash bins with trash all over the place. A simple easy and efficient way of depositing my waste and theyโre all within a block of me! I hope this project grows and has more of a positive effect on NYCโs trash problems

I was ridiculously excited to see one of these bins in my neighborhood, then skeptical (typical New Yorker) of whether this program would work as well as it should. As it turns out, it works great. See whether your bin is available or full, open it without trouble using the Bluetooth connection. Three bins within walking distance of my home, never full, available 24/7, accepting of all types of food scrapsโthe perfect combination for easy composting. No issues whatsoever with NYCCompost after several weeks of use.

I have been composting for years but the compost pick-up sites are limited in place, times and dates. Now there is a bin a block away. Brilliant idea on behalf of the environment. Thank you NYC.

This is the future. Best compost collection system in the world. Other cities should be jumping all over this.

Now that I have a compost bin on my block, I can save a trip to the farmers market to drop off my compost every week. This new program is a huge time savings for me.

Using these bins is so straightforward and simple. Iโve started dropping compost off on the daily. Highly recommend getting NYCCompost if you live near a drop off site!

Very simple, user friendly app and compost system! My only thing is that the program still doesnโt have a single downtown/midtown location. Itโs an awesome, and much-needed composting program though, so I hope this changes soon!

So convenient. Only one time, on a Sunday afternoon, has it not worked for me. Otherwise itโs always available.

I donโt ever leave reviews but so excited to see this roll out in my neighborhood. NYC joins the modern age of urban waste mgmt with these bins. Just made my first drop, worked like a charm!
by Streetman45
So. Easy. I scanned. It opened. I put in my whole compostable salad bowl and utensils. Incredible to know that they wonโt be sitting in some landfill for years! NYC is cleaning up!!
by Latinpoppy
Works very well and so convenient with lots of bins around.

Iโm so glad this exists. What a great approach to composting for the city to take!

I love NYCCompost so much! Simple, clean design. Well thought out. It does exactly what it says it will do โ helps you discard your compost safely and easily. xo
