Review of Red Rover

Frustrated! RedRoverK12 installed fine, but I don’t like the timed schedule for notifications of available jobs with RedRoverK12 . If I want to stay on top of available jobs, I’ll need to go to the website which isn’t available when I’m at a school because I can’t use the school’s WiFi- which is the case with all of the schools I work in. Seems to defeat the purpose of an app if notifications for available jobs in 2 or more days in the future don't come out on app till 12 noon. When working I can’t consistently check RedRoverK12 at noon for future jobs. I don't understand why the notification timed schedule part of RedRoverK12 isn’t set up differently and doesn’t work nearly as well as other sub notification apps I have used.

App crashes on important tasks

When turning on calendar integration RedRoverK12 crashes. When you check your schedule RedRoverK12 crashes. I made sure my device was up to date on updates. I uninstalled and reinstalled RedRoverK12 to make sure it wasn’t an update issue. These features are important on a substitute teacher application.

Doesn’t show notifications

This is my first week using RedRoverK12, and I don’t get notifications. I have all my notifications turned on, I even have them listed as persistent, so when I manually go into Red Rover, just to check, there were a ton of jobs there that never came through on my phone. I only want to do the school that my kids go to, and I’m probably missing so many opportunities because I don’t get notified when something becomes available.

Never send notifications

RedRoverK12 barely sends me any notifications. Yes, I have my notifications on and I have checked my settings. I have to constantly be on RedRoverK12 or website refreshing and checking. Sometimes jobs will be available but I will never get a notification for it. I wish my district was sticking to Frontline.

Jobs already gone

By the time I see them on my app exactly when it notifies me, they are already gone. And I’m seeing jobs at schools I hid. What’s the point of hiding them? I don’t understand preferences when I see jobs from schools I don’t want to work at. I don’t like RedRoverK12, I’m not getting jobs.

I have hidden schools I don’t want to see jobs from, like all the high schools and junior highs and I still see those jobs, so hiding schools doesn’t work.

I worked pretty much every day the last 2 years on their old app, now the jobs are gone before I even tap them so they are NOT hitting everyone’s app at the same time. I hear the notification and can’t tap fast enough.

And as filters, those don’t work either. I chose one and it goes back to no filters applied. Preferences says default. I guess that means all schools show, even though you have all schools as a choice.

Other districts used the frontline app and I never had problems with it. I could actually choose the schools I’d work at and I then never saw jobs from ones I didn’t want to work at. And I could use Sub Alert that helped me see jobs first before they were gone. Your app is not one they support.

I still don’t like your app as I’m used to working and picking the jobs I want. Now I’m not working as I can’t even get a job. I worked the first 3 weeks of school last year and pretty much worked every day in jobs I wanted. I’m a retired teacher.

Substitute Teacher and Para

Have only been using RedRoverK12 for two weeks but have found it to be complicated. Either I have alerts and cannot see the job openings in the phone or the websites. Because I am a planner with kids with appointments and community involvement. I need to see the positions available for the month not just the immediate day to day. I cannot see the future job availability just the ones that come up for the same day or the next.

This app makes a difficult job even more difficult.

There are issues with many aspects of RedRoverK12, but I’ll describe one specific one that is extremely frustrating. When you type notes, the keyboard won’t go away so that you can save them and move on. Only by randomly clicking on the page was I able to get the keyboard to go away. If you’ve not copied your notes to later paste because you’re worried RedRoverK12 doesn’t work properly, you’d most likely lose what you’ve spent time on.

Mobile app glitchy

Red Rover is very difficult to use on my phone. Each time I attempt to select an entry for each part of the absence form, the selections roll when I attempt to touch the done button, and it takes me multiple attempts to get the correct selection selected. It’s very frustrating and time-consuming.

I’d like to try this out but

RedRoverK12 thinks I already have an account. I get no other option except login. Tried to contact support, but I needed to login to a nonexistent account. Chat on the website completely freezes out teachers/substitutes; Contact them only if you want a demonstration/sales pitch.

I’m not sure if I’m disappointed, irked, or flummoxed. I guess it’s a bit more of all three.

I’m glad some other subs are getting to use RedRoverK12. It looks like what I wanted to augment my other absence management app.

Not an effective app for subbing

RedRoverK12 does not work for me and I have deleted and uploaded it multiple times in hope it will fix itself. I tell the district administration about it and she does not know how to help me. I explained that the positions for subbing come in, I am not able to take them. It tells me that is no longer available or it disappears. So, I have not shaken an assignment, since the school year started. Also, I don’t hear the positions when they come in. But the time I go and try to take them, there are gone.

Won’t work on IPad, log in issues

Required by my school district, but a real pain to log into.
I have given up using the iPad app, so I have to use the online version - yet I have to reset my password every time I log in to create an absence.
No way to call for them for customer service, so Red Rover overall, is an endless frustrating experience for this teacher.

Substitute teacher

Not pleased with the system notifying a substitute of a job offer. You have to carry a phone with you 24/7 to get a notification and when you get the notification by the time you click the tab for the assignment is taken, you can go for days without get any assignments, the phone call worked fine , I’ve spoken to other substitutes and they prefer the old system where you received the offer by phone or if you worked at a school before ,they would call you back. This new system is horrible.

Gatekeepers, unusable app

This is the quite possibly the worst app I’ve ever used. Assignments and schedules disappear; if crashes; it asks you to set preferences but it gives you no way to execute your preferred actions. Like it’s asking you for information on the premise of giving you more power, but you actually don’t get anything. They give you what they want you to see and collect your data and brag to their clients how they deliver more subs and they are lying.

Terrible for subs!

These glowing reviews must not be from subs and the ones that are must never have used an app that actually works. Red Rover is a very outdated system when it comes to notifying substitutes of jobs. I have to check RedRoverK12 all day long to get jobs because I’m not being notified. It’s not an issue on my end, but theirs. I’ve confirmed this with the company and they stated their system is designed this way. They are way behind technology and they don’t care about it. Who wants to be on RedRoverK12 all day!? It’s unfortunate that districts are going to this product! I don’t recommend this product but unfortunately if your district uses Red Rover, they don’t allow any third party apps. Too bad because SubAlert was amazing!

Reading Reviews and Comments

A friend has RedRoverK12 and after reading all the reviews and comments, the issues are still the same. Notifications come through for sub jobs and seconds they are gone, or jobs do not refresh. This is clearly an issue for multiple districts and multiple people. Notifications not coming through or receiving jobs for schools that I have hidden. Why would the developers not take in consideration the issues. Reading the developer responses seem to be automated and basic answers. Why not try to ACTUALLY fix the problems that everyone is having.

Issues withAssignments

My experience with Red Rover is unsatisfactory, and many other substitutes are of the same opinion. It is extremely difficult to obtain jobs. For example, as soon as my notification alerts me I immediately click on the assignment. Ninety percent of the time I receive the message, “This assignment is no longer available.” Basically, I am receiving assignments through the school secretary. Are other subs receiving notification sooner? There is definitely an issue. I regret the district left Frontline for Red Rover. Trust me it is not a user problem!
Is there a solution to this problem? Many times my notification does even alert me but happen to see it pop up on my I-phone. I have RedRoverK12 on my phone and computer.

Delayed notifications = no jobs

WORST sub app I’ve used. Notifications on iOS are so delayed that even if you click the banner before it fully drops, you will find the job has already been taken. DEVS! FIX THIS DELAY ASAP!!! At least 50 jobs have slipped away from me and I am still unable to book a single job. I tested this delay theory by leaving my desktop browser open and yes, there is a delay of about 10 minutes between the desktop and app notifications. Subs are not able to sit at a computer all day and wait for jobs to populate on the website. DEVS! FIX THIS TERRIBLE USER INTERFACE. As is, RedRoverK12 is hurting teachers.

Review

You asked me to set up favorite schools, and I did. Yet still I receive notices about schools. I DONT WANT TO WORK AT! Also setting up a non work day is difficult , I would like a calendar to pop up so I ca choose specific DATES , currently I can only choose availability for the days of the week. Also why can’t you app work on I pads!? That’s a popular device that gives a larger screen than my cell phone, and would be easier to use!. Right now only a slim screen shows up on IPad and not all options are visible. Thank you.

Not user friendly

I also cannot get jobs through RedRoverK12. SmartFind worked exceptionally well for the last several years. I was able to work just about everyday at my two schools of preference.
I do not want to work all over the county. I only want to work at the schools closest to where I live and where my kids go. I am not wasting gas driving all over the county.
Also, by the time I get any notification, open RedRoverK12 , & look, the assignments are already gone.
I don’t care “how competitive” the area is, it should be a rolling list like SmartFind was.
Do better.

Bad UX design

Very frustrating to use! Not easy to use, I have to go back and forth to manage my jobs and schedule, sometimes I get to a page and I can’t leave it. I was using Frontline and it is so much organized, I can enter my scheduled jobs to my calendar with a click right after taking it. I once was scheduled a job without me knowing or receiving an email confirmation. I heard a complaint from Guest teachers like me about it. This morning I received a cancellation email at 11:20 am, where I was supposed to get it at 8:30 am!

No refresh!

If you live in an area with competitive subbing RedRoverK12 has one major flaw: it does not update in real time! So if you are looking at the assignment list and there are 3 jobs listed but you get a notification for a new job, that job will not show up on the list unless you close out RedRoverK12 and reopen. The same is true if you look at the list then go to another app or put phone on sleep mode then go back- RedRoverK12 does not refresh or have a manual refresh feature- you must close RedRoverK12 by swiping up, then reopen to see anything new- no real time refresh. You will waste a lot of time seeing updated job list. Swipe out, reopen. Swipe out, reopen. It would be really easy to add a refresh feature, and hard to believe they haven’t done this yet.

Too important to be glitchy

First I got an unsuccessful cycling login, then stuck on a loading screen. After that it logged me in as “Undefined User.” Once I got logged in it wouldn’t let me select the time absent without resetting to SELECT… The same thing happened when trying to pick Reason For Absence. It’s the spin wheel select function that’s causing that issue.
Look, if RedRoverK12 weren’t used for a RATHER IMPORTANT purpose of insuring proper substitute coverage for school children, I might not be writing this. The function RedRoverK12 is supposed to serve is too important to be this glitchy.

Frustrating touch response on phone

My iPhone SE gen2 is not finicky with my touch, in fact it’s very accurate.
But RedRoverK12 is frustrating because it took minutes and multiple attempts to make selections “stick”. On most every option required. For example, one example in creating an absence is selecting the time of absence. A rotator scroll appears, I choose my time (1/2 day am), and it just scrolls back to “choose”. I try then touching that selection after scrolling the rotator. Nope. I end up back at the inital selection screen. And that happened with almost every selection item. And, try it when you wake up vomiting with fever at 2am!
And acknowledging that I had read the welcome bulletins and watched the video required minutes and multiple taps and retaps and going out an back in the bulletin. Whew it finally worked. Idk the problem, but not all absences are planned for surgeries next week, but sometimes are for real sudden illness… and I don’t have a computer by my bed, bicket and towel.

Delay in notification

RedRoverK12 works well and the interface is easy to use. However, there must be a delay in the time that notifications go out to certain people because as soon as I get a notification I’m grabbing my phone like a crazy person and I still can’t go fast enough to not get the “this assignment is no longer available” notification. We’re talking one second between the notification ding and my logging in. This has to mean that the notifications aren’t going out uniformly because it’s impossible for me to accept a job with that little turn around time. You would have to be sitting there constantly refreshing throughout the day and accomplishing little else to beat me logging in and yet I can’t get one single job.

Doesn’t work right

I’m having issues with RedRoverK12 sending me real time notifications. I’ve read other reviews here that describe my exact experience (assignments being gone before I can even process what I’m reading). I see where the developers are saying this must be due to working in a competitive district. At first, that’s what I thought too. But now, assignments directed directly towards me are not showing up. I have a friend who subs in the same district and she gets different assignments than I do. Sometimes she gets assignments and I get none, and visa versa. And it’s not due to settings/preferences, because ours are the same. Very frustrating.

Very Frustrating

I have to check RedRoverK12 constantly to make sure it’s working correctly. It often changes my favorite schools. I get jobs for schools I don’t want.
Unless I spend my entire day just checking RedRoverK12 for jobs, I can’t get any! They are gone in about 5 seconds.

Not easy to navigate

Tried to cancel a job that was given to me without my consent and it won’t let me. It keeps saying to give a reason then when I try to give a reason I can only fill out the comment section, which I did and it still says to give a reason. (Did this 3 times then gave up) The only option given to me is (none) and it still won’t go through. Very frustrating.

Used to love it

Loved using RedRoverK12 as it helped me monitor absences for my staff. However, something happened and now it won’t log me in. I’ve deleted and re-downloaded, but only get a white screen after putting in my email, not even a chance to input my password. Works great on desktop but not so much on my phone. Am I doing something wrong? 😔

It was great but not anymore

RedRoverK12 was great before, but whenever I try to view my schedule to sub nowadays RedRoverK12 force closes. I’ve waited months hoping this gets fixed in an update, but the issue continues. I have to use the online portal in a browser most of the time, which makes RedRoverK12 pointless. At least some of the other features like marking dates I’m unavailable still work.

Breaking up the days.

I don’t know if it is because the year just stated but I’m seeing a lot of multi-day events. Most I can only work one of the two days. Having them posted as a single day with a feature to claim multiple days might get more subs filling positions.

Jobs Picked Up Before I’m Notified

RedRoverK12 is easy enough to use but I’m extremely frustrated with it because every time a job comes through, it is gone before I can get it open, which is crazy when I open it immediately upon notification of a job. What’s even more frustrating, I’m listed as a preferred sub and was told that it should be coming to me before being released to the gen pop but it is still gone upon opening the listing. 🤨

Ever since update only half effective

Used to love the ease of RedRoverK12 but ever since the update it is only effective in entering absences. I am no longer able to enter my after school extra duty hours like I used to in the timesheet section. I now have to do that separately on my computer. Was much easier being able to do it on my phone immediately rather than having to remember to login and do it later

Easy to navigate

The system works nicely. It would be nice if subs could review schools that they work. Most of the schools give great support to subs but others do not. I would like to know what I’m getting into before arriving. Being able to read a review would allow this to happen.

Reviews should be anonymous so that subs would not be reluctant to submit one.

Rover needs improvements

Rover does accomplish what it is set up to do, but it is hard to use.

1. I do not sub in elementary schools. I select favorite schools. I ask to filter only favorites. The next day all is forgotten!

2 when a job becomes available I need to see it on a calendar. But if I go back to my calendar someone else grabs the job! So I take jobs that often have to be cancelled.

Northfield High School, Northfield MN

While I l many things about the interface— simplicity and clarity among them, I do have one real concern. I have already missed four assignments due to the fact that I don’t always get an audible indication of a message, or it’s so soft that I cannot hear it. our previous system allowed me to set up a specific sound to let me know when I was receiving a message for an assignment. I would really like to see this so I know immediately that it is Red Rover sending me the message. Thank you for your consideration.

Keyboard will not hide

On the date selection and a few other typing fields the keyboard will not hide or allow you to scroll to the done/submit buttons.

I like it but wish there was messaging

Wish we could send messages and documents back and forth from teacher you are subbing for.

Very Convenient

RedRoverK12 is very convenient but it can be a bit slow loading new assignments overall pretty good but if they found a way to optimize the loading time for new assignments that’d be awesome. Additionally, it would be nice to know a bit more about the assignments before signing up for them but I believe RedRoverK12 does actually have a notes section for teachers to leave details about assignments but most choose not to leave any.

Review

Decent app. Many pages are difficult to navigate because the ENTER button is not visible because the keyboard is in the way. Also, in the case of writing this review, I can’t see what I am writing. Nothing is on my screen. Hope there are no typos.

So easy to use!

I’m really grateful that our district switched to the Red Rover app. As a substitute, RedRoverK12 makes it so easy to find jobs, filter for what I prefer, and I love that notifications pop up when a job is available. It’s really user friendly and I like that I can easily access my schedule, and set up notification preferences to fit my needs. It’s a great tool!

Doesn’t work sometimes

It was great till it wasn’t ! Now it just crashes when I open it ! Please fix! Turns out I just needed to reinstall RedRoverK12 and it works fine again

Way better than waiting for a text or phone call!

RedRoverK12 is great—it makes it so easy to schedule, plus I can pull up the calendar to see what I’ve signed up for. It also lets you pick the schools you want to see so you’re not inundated with requests from everywhere. Highly recommend!

Easy to use

I’ve been using Red Rover for nearly 6 months now as a substitute secretary as well as a substitute teacher. I love that I can see what jobs are available for both positions and that I can filter by the kind of job I am looking for. I also like being able to dismiss ones that I cannot take. Very easy to use, nice looking design.

Love!!

Red Rover is the easiest possible way I could’ve asked to pick up assignments. I was really nervous going into subbing, I thought I was going to wait around for phone calls the night before or the morning of. The flexibility to cancel assignments when I have something come up, and how easy it is to see what is available is amazing!!

Timely Substitute Offers

One of the 2school districts I substitute in switched to Red Rover this year. The other school district still uses the software that calls on the phone and limits responses.

This year almost 100% of my substitute assignments come from the district using Red Rover. By the time the phone calls come from the other district,I have already accepted an assignment from the district using Red Rover.

Tacos

RedRoverK12 is pretty sweet. It lets you customize your substitute experience by adding different toppings. Who knew peanut butter and guacamole paid so well on tacos.

Great app!

RedRoverK12 is exactly what it’s described as, and exactly how the majority of the reviews say it is. I’ve never experienced any issue. Periodically, I’ll get a notification for an open sub spot and when I tap on it, it won’t be available—but in my experience, that’s generally just when a teacher/admin staff are putting in a teacher’s absence and then assigning it to a specific sub in a preplanned agreement. It’s never been a RedRover/app problem.

Red Rover App for Substituting

I enjoy the features Red Rover has provided like instantaneous job listing notifications, easy to maneuver schedule managing, efficient ways of handling preferences and availabilities along with simple, detailed descriptions of said job listings. I’m even a fan of the name of RedRoverK12 ! Most importantly it’s help guide me through my first year of substituting and I’ve in turn found myself grateful for even the little things like reminders of assignments. All the stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very efficient

The Red Rover app sends notifications of posted substitute openings. It’s the main way I find out about positions that are available. One of the nice features is that someone can request me and put it into the system so it’s prearranged ahead of time. I think RedRoverK12 is very easy to use and as a teacher full-time, I used it when I needed to report an absence and it’s very helpful. It’s also hassle free especially if a teacher has an emergency and needs to take a day off a sick day, etc.

Thank you

Site is very user friendly, thank you!

Free and easy to use!

I recently started using RedRoverK12 and it has been so easy and straightforward to use!
The updates and notifications are so timely and helpful in getting sub jobs and I appreciate how easy it is to accept jobs! It is also free and it is so nice to not have another expense to think about.

The Red Rover support team was also exceptional. They were always available to address any questions or concerns I had, providing swift and effective solutions. It's clear that customer satisfaction is a top priority for them.

Great App

Our school district started using RedRoverK12 two years ago. What a relief! Our former system was absolutely horrible and nearly drove me to quit my job….which I love! We lost many great substitutes over it. Red Rover has been like a breath of fresh air. I am not that tech savvy, but have had great success with RedRoverK12! It was simple to download and is very easy to navigate. It is not intrusive or disruptive. I simply click on it when I want to check anything, or browse the notifications. It is convenient to cancel when need be, or adjust availability. I love the convenience and efficiency of the Red Rover system. Fantastic App!

Awesome

It’s a great new program just extremely difficult to obtain jobs. Normally the job is posted no longer available in less than 2/5 seconds.

Easy to use and accept

I find the Red Rover easy to locate open jobs and quickly accept them. It’s nice that all my school districts are on the same app.

Great app!

I love RedRoverK12! Functional, easy to use, and free. Thank you so much for designing such an intuitive app that makes our lives easier.

Review of Red Rover

RR is good but adding pay information would be useful…….other sub apps list pay information and assists subbing decisions.

By far my only thing

How did the first thing you did

So easy and FREE

I love RedRoverK12. It’s free and let’s me do nearly everything I need inside of it without having to go to the website. My district used to use another system where I had to pay for RedRoverK12 and you couldn’t do all the things you need in it.

Easy to Use!

I have subbed in multiple cities across the country over the years and used different subbing apps. Red Rover is one of the best. You can easily scroll through available sub jobs, choosing or deleting jobs based on your interest. It is simple to set up and change your availability as you need to. The thing I like the best is that you can cancel right from RedRoverK12 when unexpected things in life or illness happen. Nothing is a hassle, but it is all very user-friendly. Highly recommend!

I concur with a review posted (Google) on Sept 16, 2024 which reads: “ Only way to pick up a job on this app is to be constantly refreshing the screen to see jobs as they appear. Push notifications do not come until AFTER someone watching the screen has already picked up the job” Red Rover response to this review: Red Rover Technologies LLC September 16, 2024 Hi Jay - "thanks for the review! If you receive a notification about a job that is available, and you go to accept that job and receive an indication that the job was taken by another substitute, it means that someone reacted to the notification more quickly, unfortunately. This is not a paid app designed to give you an advantage over others." It should be noted that another reason you get an indication that the job was taken (rather than someone else reacted more quickly) is that the Red Rover app notified someone else ‘sooner’ than you. I hope Red Rover improves on this app.. not to give “an advantage over others”, but to make it a more even playing field.

This is a very frustrating app to use on the phone. First, it constantly drops my favorites to "default" so that I have to keep resetting. It is slow, slow, slow, sometimes stuck before I can even accept an assignment and then it is gone! Additionally, it also shows available assignments on days I have marked as unavailable. It is difficult to mark out a half day if working the other half of the day already. I would give it zero stars given the option. 0

Losing lots of assignments because the very second I get a notification and I click on it, I get a message that the assignment is no longer available. Many times, I am literally holding my phone in my hand when the notice comes in and it's already taken? Something is definitely not right. I feel as if I'm on a TV Game show with a clicker in my hand. Whoever clicks first gets to answer first. Honestly, it feels as if someone is throwing one piece of meat out to a large pack of hungry wolves. At least with the phone call you are only competing with yourself-yes or No.
