About Firesource

Perimeter data is provided by the Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services (WFIGS) Group and hosted in the National Interagency Fire Center ArcGIS Online Organization (The NIFC Org).

To report a fire, press the yellow + button in the top right corner of the map, select the type of fire (vehicle fire, forest fire, terrain fire, structure fire), take a photo of the fire, and press submit.

When viewing user-reported fires in the feed, other users can ‘rate’ the fire report by confirming that it is active, contained, or a spam reporting.

Allowing app users to report a fire and immediately inform other users is an essential aspect of Firesource.

Firesource displays fire perimeters and descriptions of their progress in the ‘National Fires’ tab of the menu, with this information updated on a regular basis.

Please note that submitting a fire report automatically creates the report at the user’s location, to further ensure that the fire is local and valid.

To ensure the validity of fire reports, the user must take a photo of the fire and cannot access Camera Roll to select a picture.

Information provided from MODIS about each detection includes brightness (brightness temperature in Kelvin of a fire pixel) and confidence (quality of fire pixel).

Air quality measurements from across the United States are collected from AirNow.gov, which provides national air quality data using the Air Quality Index (AQI).

These fire detections are extremely useful, as they can indicate new fires and fire spread.

InciWeb collects wildfire incident data from several agencies across the United States and provides all of this data together in several feeds.

Firesource presents wildfire incidents reported by InciWeb in real time, providing the fire’s location and detailed status.

InciWeb is an interagency incident management system run by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.

Thermal hotspot detections are displayed and collected from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), which is an instrument on the Terra and Aqua satellites.

Too hard to view fire perimeters

Things I want to know right off the bat: where are the fires, how big is the active/burned area, what direction is it moving, and what’s the air quality. While Firesource does have perimeter info, it’s too hard to find for each fire and should be displayed on the map by default. But I do really appreciate that Firesource also has air quality.

I always feel like I’m fighting with the bottom menu to stay minimized, it keeps popping up and takes 1/3 of the screen. Even the minimized version of the menu uses a lot of real estate. I doubt I would ever use the feed.

Firesource is promising because most of the information is there, it just needs to be displayed better!

Getting better,but....

App is getting better but I think it’s weakest feature is clearly outlining the most important info about each fire in a more useful/fast way to digest.

Example: When tap on a active fire nearby, you’re taken to the fire info page and then the data that is collected for that fire is just very crudely added in a hard to read type...

I would pick this data apart and make basic info more readily available such as “containment”, “air quality”, etc.

I mean, that is the main thing we are looking for when we tap on a fire to see. So having to weed through text to find the 1 important piece of info we need is kinda mundane.

My 2 cents.

Super informative

Love the breadth of information and the ability to see pics of some of the fires. Great app to have in California!

Limited information

Firesource is easy to use but just offers a small amount of information. There are better apps available.

My review

Very useful app that can be used to help community evacuate.
I highly recommend it

No fire perimeters or full text

Limited usefulness for large wildfires as all fires are only marked with a single point rather than showing their perimeter. If the text describing a fire is long, it is cut off and there is no way to read the full entry. I recommend avoiding Firesource in its current state.

Super clean experience 👌🏻

Great work!

Nice and simple

Good for getting snapshots to track fires while traveling.
Would be nice to also see a list of % of containment.

Kind of Worthless

Watch TV, it’s better than Firesource. Not user friendly and takes forever to boot up.

Outdated information

We have a fire that’s moving fast. The info Firesource has is 2 days old. It is giving me information for wildfires in Utah, even though it has my locator in Ca. I’m not in Utah.
Firesource is worthless!

Not in real time

There are multiple fires here right now, but none of them are listed on Firesource. Disappointed.
