Could be great and I wish it was.

I feel like 5eCompanionApp has potential to be better than most other characters creation options for players. It has most of the SRD already in 5eCompanionApp for easy selection. Not all the info is correct but a lot is. You can also homebrew to correct what is wrong. It neatly shows your skills, proficiencies, saving throws, weapons, equipment, and ability scores. Still it is missing some very important stuff.

My issue with it is that class and subclass feature don’t show. You can go through all the work to homebrew a class and subclass but you won’t see the features on the character sheet. This is the case for the original classes and subclass too.

For example: I created an arcana domain cleric. I could see my spells and channel divinity, but divine intervention was not there. Also, none of the subclass specific features were on the sheet. It also does not show possible bonus actions or reactions. No point using 5eCompanionApp if I can’t see my abilities in my opinion.

Loosing languages

So I’d say this is a great app but just by editing my character it seems like I’m loosing stuff that I didn’t even interact with. Right now what I’ve notice is languages the most. For example I’m playing a faun or satyr Druid. So I know Druidic common and sylvan. Then looking at backgrounds the one I liked the most was Ticklebelly nomad so now I know giant. But after messing around with spells or anything else I go back to the info I noticed I was missing a few went to mess around some more to double check until I only had giant left. I have tried it a couple of times and I have a few screen shots I’m willing to show to show what I mean. I don’t even really care to know giant speech but I do care for the others though I don’t want my dm to think I’m trying to cheat them when it’s says one thing one minute and then another after I change a spell or if I level up

Great App, but not without problems

I would rate a full 5/5 stars, but I can't really do that because of a problem I've had for a while now. My phone can run it perfectly fine, and it's a great app! It's super helpful (although with some oddities like Tortle subraces that are unofficial, playable Mind Flayers, and unlabeled unearthed arcana) but the issue that is the problem that keeps me from feeling right about a full five stars is something on my iPad. 5eCompanionApp just won't open. Like I said, on my iPhone, it runs perfectly fine, but on my iPad, when I try to open it, I see a blank white screen for like a minute before it just completely crashes. No loading screen, no indication of any part of it functioning, just white and then a crash. There are some old characters of mine that I want to be able to look at, but I just can't. I tried to find files from 5eCompanionApp , but I couldn't find it, presumably because apple is very restrictive on which app files can be accessed. Please fix this problem, I would like to see the characters I have on my iPad.

Great app

This is a great app for spit bowling ideas of characters both as NPC‘s, villains, player characters. I can even see where it’s gonna be handy for creating events.
I would like to see 5eCompanionApp be updated in small user experience ways. For instance leveling up a character. When playing a campaign and using 5eCompanionApp as a companion to keep track of information its great especially when it comes to experience game.
Sadly not all GM’s use experience game and prefer to go the route of event level ups. It would be great if in the settings we were able to switch the style experience for leveling up. This will make it a lot easier for games that use in event-based level up and anyone that wants to experiment with a character to see where they want to go with it. With the current set up it’s a little clunky. It works well enough but isn’t as fun and fluid as it could be.
All I’m suggesting is some UI and settings options to be added if they aren’t already. Great app overall and would definitely recommend

It used to work...

This has been a great app, and I recommend it to all sorts of people, but there is a little hitch recently.

With the instillation of the 6.0 update I can no longer even open 5eCompanionApp , it crashes immediately, and so I’m not sure if this was addressed: in 5.0 at least there was no mention of size class whatsoever for the character races, and resistances and immunities were skipped for the monster stat blocks, not to mention that in some cases comparing between the Monster Manual and 5eCompanionApp the hp of the monsters were different, usually around 10 off.

This has been really helpful, especially for playing on a camp out or when I wasn’t expecting the gang, so for this to be addressed would be great, my review will definitely be five if this changes or has been addressed.

Pretty darn good! Just some inconveniences.

I want to start by saying 5eCompanionApp is fantastic!
It has pretty much I all I need, 5eCompanionApp just has some glitches. Such as, whenever I finish a character and give them proficiencies in a ability (such as insight or stealth) from a background and I click on the background to look at what proficiencies it gives me it’ll take them away and I have to give myself the proficiency bonus again. Also every time I level up it’ll go down the list of what new abilities I get which is good, but it goes down by level. So say I’m a level 10 fighter, it’ll show what new feat I get and whatnot but then it’ll also tell me everything I already know I have again like extra attack, superiority die, etc. Other than that I wish there was some more items in the armor category like all the magical armor. And for some reason 5eCompanionApp says a Maul does 1d6 damage when it actually does 2d6 same with the greatsword. If you ever update 5eCompanionApp again and fix all this I’ll be very grateful! Keep up the great work because your app is amazing and the best character sheet app out there because I can basically do whatever I want with it and it helps a lot!

Great app, not without flaws

I vastly prefer 5eCompanionApp to dndbeyond because it includes so much content, is very customizable, and most importantly, is absolutely free if you can't/won't pay. BUT, that being said, it's not perfect. The ads can be quite obnoxious, seeing as you have to watch a 30 second add to level up a character 1 level, and you can only level them up one at a time. It also doesn't include everything, although it includes almost everything. I noticed it is missing the Grung race, but that's the most glaring missing information. I also would love to see ways to fully costomize the characters even more, like homebrew classes, subclasses, races, backgrounds. Ways to manually edit the bonuses to specific skills, etc. All together, an amazing app for someone unwilling or unable to shell out hundreds of dollars for dnd beyond.

Overall great! Fantastic for DMs too! Problem with Bestiary Though...

I'm a DM and I use 5eCompanionApp to track a ton of things. Basically everything works great, with one rather large problem: the bestiary, being the best I've seen in any app as it has content from all the expansions and is easily searchable, has a massive flaw that unfortunately renders it useless: it only shows what damage types a creature is immune to-- but not the ones it's resistant too. This is a major problem as tonnnnss of creatures have resistances, and not being able to see that renders the otherwise wonderful beastiary unfortunately unusable. Other than that, 5eCompanionApp is excellent!

Pretty Solid

I’m digging 5eCompanionApp to store my monsters and get the turn order set. I did discover a bug today though:

When adding a home brew monster to the library, after saving and search for it, each attempt to click on it completely freezes 5eCompanionApp . It’s the first time it’s happened, so I don’t know what I’ve done different with this creature to cause the freeze. It looks like 5eCompanionApp is stuck thinking, as the search bar indicator is still flashing once clicking on the creature. No other indication is given that anything happens, and you cannot navigate 5eCompanionApp any longer. I have to force close it to open again.

Great app! Useful! Needs a little improvement.

5eCompanionApp works well. It's fairly user friendly. It helps guide you in making characters. I have made 3 characters so far and plan to continue to use it for more later. Most of the time it enters the info. They have all the races even done ones that Homebrew ones.
1. You can't remove spells, weapons, or armor once they have been added to a character. You can add custom spells though.
2. Languages and some other abilities of your character is under information instead on your character.
3. Channel Divinity abilities aren't on your sheet but under the info bottom. If they have a place for feats, than they should have a place for character's abilities.
My husband is a DM and uses the whole app for monsters, beasts, spells, looking up races /class info quickly. He says it's the best app out there for creating characters and he does his research for everything. I have even researched them too, and found this one I like the best as well!
During campaigns we will use 5eCompanionApp for fimialiars' states while fighting. There is a notes spot which helps. Leveling up is fairly easy. You can add custom weapons, spells, armor, or things to your equipment.

Decent App but...

I would like to say that this is a good app and useful for one wanting to play D&D.
However, there are some content fixes/suggested additions I would like to point out.

1) Some Spellcasting classes listed incorrectly. (ie: Paladin being listed as a Full Caster class when it is a Half Caster class.)
2) Ads take quite some time to load, making leveling up multiple levels at once annoying. (And maybe decrease the Ad Removal price a bit? Maybe to 1.99 or .99? Not trying to pressure you or anything, just something I think many people would like, considering other apps with the same content are less pricey.)
3) Newer expansions such as Wildemount not included, which we could add ourselves, but it can take a while adding the different Archetypes, Spells, etc, which isn't something that I'd imagine some people want to do when there are other apps with the newer expansions accessible easily.
4) Maybe add counters for things like Action Surge? It took me a bit to try and find where it is listed, and you need to memorize how much you have used, which could be put in notes, but an charge count would be appreciated.

Overall, I think that this is an app with great potential, and I thank you for listening to what I have to say.

Great Companion App for all, just a few things tho-

Everything about 5eCompanionApp is great! Quick Character Creation, Fast Encounter Set up, ability to Add things to 5eCompanionApp . Its all good. Just one thing that irks me.

The Content updates for the Apple Version take Months longer then ANY other version. Ive waited up too 5-6 months waiting for a new Content drop that my friends (who have Samsung and a Variety of different phones from different makers.) have already gotten. I have Auto Update on too so that I don't have to come into 5eCompanionApp to Update it manually. It just takes so much long. I hope its fixed in the future

Delightful and ever improving

To begin, I’ve had 5eCompanionApp for well over a year, now! I’ve always looked forward to any new updates, and I had the beta version on my old phone. It really is my favorite companion app! Especially for homebrew or quick monster stats.
On the other hand, though, I really wish there was an index for magic items outside of the inventory. I know that may be pushing it with Wizards’ trigger happy copy right team, it would be greatly appreciated!
I’m also experiencing a glitch that, when I try to filter the school of spells I’m looking for, 5eCompanionApp crashes. Also, when I’m making a character, the creator will close out if I temporarily move to a different app. Even if I don’t actually close it out! These didn’t used to be issues, but they makes things difficult.

Running UA Playtest

I’m running a new group through Dragon Heist using the playtest material for 2024 . As you can imagine with all the changes to character creation and even the new spell organization , using any 5e character creator becomes impossible because you pick your race which automatically has its own bonus’s when now they don’t and once you pick a class you’re locked into very specific spell lists , but not here! Being able to make custom spell slot progression, racial features, backgrounds, weapons, and full on Classes with subclasses is a NAT20 in design, D&D Beyond won’t even let me make a sword that is plus one to hit but not damage. Thank you for your service! Running Playtest content has never been easier

Would recommend for character creation!

5eCompanionApp is amazing for creating characters, seeing spells, and viewing all the races and classes if you don’t want to buy the books. That part of 5eCompanionApp gets 5 stars! Now, the rest of this review doesn’t matter to me as much, but the other features of 5eCompanionApp are a bit lacking. The dice roller is unintuitive and not a great roller in general. The bestiary is fine, but the way it’s sorted is a bit janky. I don’t understand the terrain feature at all to be honest! There’s not really a tutorial beyond just showing you where to find 6 different buttons, and the combat feature seems not needed. Overall, it’s an amazing app, but these 3 features don’t really get used, and aren’t that useful in my opinion. If you are new, it’s invaluable!

Just What I’ve Been Looking For

I’ve been looking for a good 5e App with all the content on it so I didn’t have to import a bunch of files. The character system is easy to navigate, as well as all the monsters and encounters and homebrew content. It’s just a really good product!

The only problem I have is me and my friends will use 5eCompanionApp , and we’ve been experiencing a glitch. While we scroll through the skills the equipment, armor, skills, feats, and weapons tabs will sometimes duplicate onto eachother. Also the spells and weapons and equipment will do the same, or just not exist in general. Same goes for the skills. Honestly, you’ve made such a good app if you could just fix these few bugs I’d 100% recommend this to everyone I know who also plays.

My Years long experience.

I have been using 5eCompanionApp for years, and I’ve done so much with it create new, creatures, class, and character after character. If you’re thinking about downloading 5eCompanionApp do it do not hesitate to. It is incredible as I always give it to new or returning players because making new characters is a breeze. However after using it for a long time I can say that it definitely needs work in the UI department some of it can be clunky and not very polished. Also it is almost impossible to share and import .cah files, 5eCompanionApp needs a dedicated import and export button. Overall i still give 5eCompanionApp a 5 star because I can tell it was made with a lot of passion, and even with the before mentioned reasons its still a very cohesive experience.

Outright amazing

I’ve been using 5eCompanionApp for a literal year across different devices. It has never disappointed. It’s the first actually good dnd app I’ve ever found. As a dungeon master I use this for my important npcs. It’s very simple to create characters and super easy to use even if you’re a beginner.

It isn’t just a character creator though, it’s amazing as a reference. With an amazing bestiary, a long list of spells, and many more easy to navigate lists.

There is only one problem I’ve seen with it on IOS, the spell casting times don’t seem to appear, also on a long spell there usually isn’t an ability to scroll down. But that minor flaw has barely detracted from my enjoyment of this amazing app.

Great app - with some bugs

I’ve used 5eCompanionApp for a long while now and have run several games with 5eCompanionApp as a supplementary tool but I’m getting super tired of the bugs. Most of us can just build characters by hand and there’s other apps that do the same job. Having said that, for the love of god, PLEASE fix your fighter class. I can’t get it to take any other sub class other than archery. On top of that, in the character basics section, if you type in what level you want your character to be, then hit max health, it’ll reset the fighting style to archery and the level back to none. Super frustrating.

Amazing app!

I love 5eCompanionApp so much. It has everything I need so I can leave my papers at home. I think only thing I would add to it is a way to add custom backgrounds. Meaning the way that how backgrounds have a little ability set to each one. For example far traveler people will find your mannerisms and appearance interesting and you could have a better chance to get into places you’d normal not be able to. So I would love to see a way to add a custom background name and “ability” with it.

Sorry for my ramble just wanted to make the suggestion. Either way 5eCompanionApp is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone that doesn’t want to pay for dndbeyond. There’s a rest system, ways to track your spell slots and way more. I love this so much. I have it on all my devices. I use it the most on my tablet just so I can have a bigger screen and so I don’t kill my phone while at sessions.
