About Mullvad VPN

Mullvad was founded in 2009 purely with the ambition of upholding the universal right to privacy - for you, for us, for everyone.

With Mullvad, your traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel to one of our VPN servers and then onward to the website you are visiting.

Using a VPN is a great first step toward protecting your online privacy.

Click “Create account” to generate an anonymous account number.

Same goes for your ISP; they’ll see that you’re connected to Mullvad, but not your activity.

* Creating an account requires no personal info - not even an email address.

Add time to your account via in-app purchases or on our website.

Our iOS app uses WireGuard, a superior VPN protocol that connects fast and doesn’t drain your battery.

We believe that privacy is a universal right.

You have a universal right to privacy.

Browse the web securely and privately with Mullvad VPN.

That's a tall order, but if you want to make a change, you've gotta start somewhere.

In this way, websites will only see our server’s identity instead of yours.

It’s fast, trustworthy, and easy to use.

No gimmicks fast reliable VPN

Mullvad is a no nonsense VPN. No pricing or extras gimmicks. It is fast and barely impacts my battery life which is the reason I switched from another provider. Love the idea of a flat monthly fee without long-term commitments. Choose your location and let Mullvad do the rest. You can experiment with the server choices for a given location to find the optimal speed. At home I have not noticed a meaningful drop in speed, but if I quantify it it is about 10% when comparing best speed without it and best with it which is excellent for a VPN. Don’t use it for streaming movies so can’t speak to this function. Mainly want an extra layer of security especially when joining a public Wifi or minimize being tracked to bombard me with ads based on my online activity. Looking forward to seeing how it performs if I get to travel overseas once the pandemic eases. MullvadVPN does the job, but please make it fun! Have that mole tunnel through a map ;) When I cut the umbilical cord from FB and all Google products perhaps I’ll be free :)

Been waiting for this - pleased with app!

I’ve been waiting for MullvadVPN for quite some time. I had been using Passepartout prior to this. While this is an incredible start, I’m not quite ready to switch over fully to MullvadVPN just yet. I would like to offer a few feature requests. Because I used Passepartout prior to this, most of my suggestions will be based off of the functionality and features of that app.

•Integration with Siri Shortcuts. So I can ask Siri to connect to the London VPN server for example or disconnect from the Florida server.
•Ability to favorite or adjust the listed order of servers offered. It’s great there are so many server offerings, but scrolling to the very bottom to select US gets old.
•Advanced settings such as
-keep connection alive on sleep
-enable or disable IPv6
-choose between UDP and TCP
-ability to view a debug log if desired
•More robust Account management settings from within MullvadVPN .
•App icon changes colors based on connection status. (Because most newer iPhones don’t show the VPN icon in the status bar at quick glance.)
Please don’t be discouraged by the feedback; I love MullvadVPN. I want to see it become an even more awesome app.
Thank you Mullvad Team!

Adequate but could be better

Has adequate speed and lots of nodes per city to connect to. But is blocked by certain apps/websites, not as many as Private Internet Access but more than Surfshark and ExpressVPN (the latter blocked none), and I signed up with Mullvad twice over a year and during that time the number of blocked sites increased. Speed much better than PIA but less than Express. Had an issue where I couldn’t connect on my phone via Verizon and had to install other software, kind of complicated but worked. Customer service helpful but only on Sweden hours. Best part about this VPN is the low monthly cost; however, can find comparable monthly costs with VPNs which are blocked much less and have better speeds if you do an annual membership. Would try again if I heard they improved their speeds and most importantly blocked sites.

Great VPN Terrible App

The service itself is peerless. MullvadVPN to access this service is amateurish at best. You have to use it in portrait aspect ratio, even if your device is locked to landscape. Logically, when your month is up, you can’t access the internet. Illogically, you cannot terminate your connection to the VPN server when your subscription is up, so MullvadVPN doesn’t allow you to access the internet to buy another month. Even when you deactivate the VPN in settings, MullvadVPN automatically turns it back on and kills your internet connection. You have to buy more time on a device that isn’t using the service in order to use the service. Additionally MullvadVPN is simplistic and visually ugly. I would not accept MullvadVPN if a student submitted it to me for a coding class. Mullvad either does not care about providing a quality user experience or they trusted MullvadVPN’s creation to interns and never bothered to check their work.

Awesome product

I’ve been using Mullvad for 2 years and their service has been amazing. They were one of the first to introduce WireGuard support and their VPN is one of the best in the market. 2 years ago, when I was choosing VPN with the help of That One Privacy Guy’s website I shortlisted only two companies - NordVPN and Mullvad. They were the only two providing great security and set of features. I’m glad I didn’t go with NordVPN as their database leaked last year. With Mullvad there is nothing to leak - they don’t ask for account or any other information. This mobile app is also great - very simple and doesn’t create a ton of profiles in iOS like WireGuard. Love it. Tack, Mullvad!

Reliable, reasonable price, seems trustworthy

Have had a good experience with mullvad. It is more “basic” then other vpns without features like specific servers that aren’t blocked by streaming services (although they just added their ad/tracking blocking dns to the mobile apps so they got that going for them, which is nice). However, the service is reliable and fast, MullvadVPN is good, they are very privacy focused and seem trustworthy (unlike some of the other heavily marketed vpns) and the price is reasonable (and doesn’t force you to lock in for a while to get a good price). Highly recommend.

Terrible!

If people like VPNs that gives them all the bells and whistles and customized everything with a single button to make people feel smart when most people don’t even know what they’re clicking then this is not for them.
If people want their user data to be farmed and only want to see apps and advertisement they want to see then mullvad is not for them.
If people are anti-anonymous then its not for them.

Terrible will be the adjective people would described MullvadVPN if they agreed to all those mentioned above.

On the other hand, this is the most private, most secure, the fastest, the simplest form of VPN i have found. And not to mention affordability. When People talk about they want simplistic app but they also want customization. Its like asking your friend to get you simple burrito but without tomatoes, guack and sour creme and add extra cheese and make xtra spicy - just complicating every simple order.

Absolutely terrible.

If you’re unfortunate enough to tap the “Refresh Key” button from 6 am until 12 pm, MullvadVPN is useless. It will say it cannot regenerate the key, then, you can’t use the internet. Why? Because your VPN is broken. You will be forced to turn off the VPN. One morning I had to log all the way out and log back in just to get this VPN to work.

I love Mullvad and I love it’s policies but this is just unacceptable. I can’t be without internet for 6+ hours at a time because I tried to refresh my key in the morning. I shouldn’t have to uninstall and reinstall the VPN, change the location and log out and log back in to use the service that I paid for. I will be taking my money elsewhere, which is a shame because Mullvad has unparalleled privacy.

Works great. Only one feature I wish it had.

I wish that it would have an option to automatically change server/location after X amount of minutes. This would make it substantially more difficult for google or other companies to narrow down where a user is based on behavior.

For example, if my gmail and my google searches are both routed through the same VPN, it’s not very anonymous. But if my location is scrambled regularly, it matters less.

Update: Great VPN but can be Better!

I’ve adjusted/updated my review after playing around with Mullvad a little more. The iOS app is still bare bones IMO and needs more user options/settings but I expect that to come in future releases since this was just released as a standalone iOS app. So I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. I do like the anonymity of no user email, info, address, phone number, etc. Very unique and cool!

I emailed support a question so I’m hoping I get a prompt response.

Update: One of the best non reporting VPNs

It’s actually scary how many levels of protection are provided with worldwide support.

I accidentally got to the top of a well known chat platform just by TRYING to stay anon.

Definitely works as intended.. also be careful on the net... It’s a scary place.

Hello fed. govt. 👋 I 🥰 U.

I did my research in worldwide privacy laws before purchasing, but I *AM* a long time customer.

p.s. I love how some of the included reviews are milking your high rating, and marketing for other VPNs. 🙄

If you guys ever need anyone to advertise for you, pls let me know because I love the service.

This, in conjunction with a few ad blocker and legacy ad blockers make any 🖥s insanely strong offensive beasts. 🙇

However, it’s not invulnerable. If you’re looking for network immunity (or offensive pen-testing) use a strong Linux or Unix build like Kali.

Excited to see the iOS app finally!

Thanks a lot for delivering MullvadVPN for iOS! MullvadVPN works great - the only issue I had was the fact that I couldn’t use my password manager to fill in the account number field. Neither could I paste it from clipboard. The only way I could log in was by manually entering the digits. It’s a minor inconvenience, though - the rest seems to work great so far!

Some annoying bugs

So this is a decent first attempt. I’ve used Mullvad for quite some time on my laptop and love it. This isn’t quite there.

The biggest problem is that the vpn doesn’t fully connect when you reopen your phone. It will show a connection, but you have no connection to the internet. The only way to fix this is to literally go and turn it on and off again, which is not “a feature” believe me.

To make matters worse, this does not happen on the iPad. iPad actually works wonderfully.

Finally, there’s no way in MullvadVPN to reach out to Mullvad like there is on Non-mobile. That’s an oversight and a poor one. They already take a while to respond. So making you search for connection information on top of releasing new apps they have to support is a terrible idea.

But when Mullvad works, it’s the best. It’s hard to do better when protecting your privacy.

So very pleased with this!

Oh, this is SO much more convenient and FASTER than openVPN with Mullvad! Quick, easy choices about what location to select, grandfathered memory about your last location selection, easy disconnect or very quick location change. I’ve also noticed less VPN limiters (aka ‘we know you are using a VPN, Stop It’) when surfing, compared to using Mullvad through openVPN.

How about a control center on/off switch?

Quick access to an on/off switch would be really nice. Actually what would really be nice is a way to exclude specific apps like streaming services that won’t work through a VPN. Maybe a timer that randomizes every so often. Maybe a way to turn off automatically on known WiFi networks.

Great start - barebones VPN app

VPN tunnel, importantly, works flawlessly. In comparison to using Mullvad with official WireGuard iOS app, would like to see Mullvad’s app add customizing Connect on Demand based on Network (known Wi-Fi SSIDs, cellular data).

That said, after 48 hours Mullvad’s implementation has been more battery efficient than the WireGuard app in my experience. Hope after long term testing that will continue to be the case.

Best VPN Service Gets Perfect App

I’ve been using Mullvad since January of 2020, even before the iOS app was released. The service is always fast, responsive, and absolutely private (tested via various internet speed checkers). The addition of MullvadVPN makes the Mullvad service perfect. A simple app for a foolproof service, you can’t go wrong with Mullvad.

MullvadVPN itself works flawlessly.

Great Start

Most important feature is MullvadVPN ’s simplicity. Bare bones, yes. But it stays connected. I haven’t had a disconnect once since I downloaded MullvadVPN last week, which is really all that matters.

Would like to see some more features that mirror what their other platforms offer, such as setting ports, switching between TCP/ UDP and allowing multi-hops, but a solid foundation is what’s most important for me.

Long time

In a way I hope this doesnt get found no logs. I’ve had it since I was 12 and I’m 28. It always worked perfectly with no logs and they rotate the servers a little. Also it has cmd line program so from the command line you can control it. So you can write scripts to rotate the server every 5 minutes

No iPad version/freezes

This is an iPhone version. Using it on the iPad makes come up in a small window in portrait mode. Very frustrating as the screen rotates. It’s also a hit and miss when trying to connect. Sometimes it connects immediately, other times it freezes and needs to be killed and started again!

I wish Mullvad pays more attention to updating MullvadVPN, making it universal to work properly on the iPad and to iron the freezing bugs.

Why keeps this from 5 stars?

It would great to be able to use a DNS provider of my choice (NextDNS, for example) to prevent ads and trackers through block lists of my choice, instead of using your ad blocking servers, which I have no control over the block lists. That’s it, honestly.
