Cant use app

I cant get past the “enable location services” screen. Location services is enabled for OuterSpatial . I cant access app support - it just takes me to where Im stuck. I cant access my community through city parks link - it just takes me to where Im stuck. I cant even skip.

pointless walled garden

I downloaded this because the Bay Area Ridge Trail linked to it for trail maps. I can see maps in OuterSpatial , but not download them to use with other data (for example, overlaying my Strava data on the Bay Area Ridge Trail).
OuterSpatial ’s goal seems to be to get publicly funded organizations to pay this app to hold their data, then pay more to push users to join “sponsored communities”. Will look elsewhere for map data.

Always “updating”

I’m not able to use OuterSpatial. Every time I try it says “checking for updates”. I even went to OuterSpatial Store and updated the there. Then opened. Same result. I’d really like to try OuterSpatial but it has never worked.

Challenge is the wrong word

Installed app because the word challenge was used, I thought there would be a challenge of hiking/running all/each trail. App seems sort of useless. Also connector trails should have specific names or numbers. Will probably remove app.

Doesn’t work

Everytime I open OuterSpatial it says I need a network connection to start OuterSpatial . It takes me to my settings and in ensure the network connection is on and “green” for this particular app, and then I go back to OuterSpatial and it gives the same pop up and OuterSpatial never works. I’ve closed it and re downloaded it twice now.

Maps are broken

The map is completely broken. It shows no trails and says “No Results” even when I have no filters selected. Search function also doesn’t give any results.
I tried zooming in in the area of a couple state parks and still the map shows no trails at all.

Total rubbish - hangs and eats your battery

I downloaded OuterSpatial for the SF Crosstown Trail. It just hangs while loading, ended up crashing 3 times while just loading images and whatever else it was trying to get. Then the battery dropped 20% in less than 3 minutes just using the map and scrolling like I would do in Google Maps. What a joke.

Where’s the filter for overnight stay?

Need to find California state parks on the map where I can spend the night, driving thru down to Arizona. Maybe I’m missing something but all I see is hiking & other activities but not camping or overnight stay, just want to pull over spend the night sleeping in my vehicle legally & safely, willing to spend a park fee over staying at a motel or hotel where my vehicle might be broke into while sleeping in my room…

deleted from “manage storage”

Has invasive data collection by default. Very difficult to delete. Can’t control which part to download for offline use. Prompt for useless beta testing and social network.

Wish I loved this

OuterSpatial is difficult to use. I’m supposed to get maps and have them offline on my phone. But it’s so not clear how to do that. I’m looking for other apps that are easier to navigate

Awkward to use

The design is not intuitive for displaying routes as compared to other features. Overall a nice idea but still needs a lot of work.

Why is this app not named CA State Parks? Weird name to try to remember

This is a cool app, but trying to remember the name of app to open is ridiculously difficult. Why isn’t the obvious name used relating to State Parks???
OuterSpatial itself is of value please seriously consider changing name. More people would download with a name they could find and quickly identify its purpose.

Nice idea but constantly says I’m not connected to the internet.

Connection problems only with OuterSpatial

edit- they fixed it with the update. I wish it had more info on the state vehicle recreational areas. Hopefully it’ll improve.

Billed?

Updated Review
I re-downloaded OuterSpatial , there was no window saying I had been billed. I can read “contact data collected” as being my contact information. This is an assumption. It would have helped me if the developer clearly stated it was only my contact data that was collected.

I live in Alaska and checked out two trails close to me. Good information and I will probably use OuterSpatial in the future.

Old Review
As soon as I clicked to download a window popped up that I had been billed. Why OuterSpatial wants access to my contacts I don’t know. What does that have to do with direction. I didn’t download OuterSpatial .

Clumsy and not exhaustive

There are so many map apps out there, and this is one more that does not impress. If you like mountain biking or hiking Trailforks is hard to beat. Avenza is nice as well. It feels like outer spacial is doing too much, and nothing well.

Just get all trails

Low count, decent overlay.

Needs improvement

Today I downloaded OuterSpatial to bike the SF Crosstown Trail. I encountered two related issues:
1) after a certain period of inactivity with OuterSpatial , when I reopen it it takes maybe 20 seconds to go through a sequence of updates, downloads and stuff.
2) once done waiting for that stuff to complete, it will dump me back to the home screen, not where I was, so I have to search for the trail and click through. I probably did this 15 times today. OuterSpatial should reopen where I left it. I ended up occasionally adding a series of points to google maps so I had something to follow that wouldn’t disappear.

Five stars for effort, however…

Downloaded to use for the new & amazing Crosstown Trail in San Fran, and am very appreciative that both OuterSpatial and the trail exist due to the selfless hard work of some very lovely people.

This is not an in-depth evaluation, just a hot take. OuterSpatial is quite attractive. However OuterSpatial is also a bit confusingly organized, and a bit glitchy (it has repeatedly crashed on two clean & updated devices).

I’ll add more specifics soon.

Happy Hiker!

I’m just downloading OuterSpatial no..I haven’t even opened it yet..but living in the vast wilderness known as Alaska we are usually dead last to get this kind of app..I’m so excited

UPDATED: Received Developer Response

Update: The developer reached out to me and I was able to go into detail about what had not worked well. They addressed each of my concerns and by the time I contacted them, they had already fixed some of the issues I mentioned in my review, and were in the process of following up on others. So, while I think OuterSpatial still needs work, I’m changing the review to 5 stars because I believe they’re actively working to fix it and make it work the way it’s intended. I should note that I’m not using OuterSpatial for myself but I only used it to participate in the Yosemite Wilderness Camping Study. Original Review: Title: Annoying and didn’t do what it said it would I was asked to participate in a study of camping in Yosemite wilderness. I told it the dates of my trip, but it sent me a notification every night from the time I consented to the study until I completed my trip. It said that I didn’t need cell service to be able to complete the questionnaires, and they could upload my responses when I was done, but when I was in the wilderness with no service, it didn’t work! Then, I tried to contact support but it requires me to have the Mail app which I deleted. Why can’t they just list an email address?
