For what it’s worth

Like the majority of the recent posts and reviews on this app, I am greatly disappointed with the developers decision to go subscription! I have been using calibre library on my laptop, and Calibre companion on my iPad and iPhone for many years having paid for and appreciated it’s simplicity and flexibility. I am simply disenfranchised by this and so many other applications which in recent times, developers have decided to, Basically take advantage of those who have respectively purchased an application in a market please where virtual commodities seem to imply that the consumer has less rights to propriety subsequent to purchase then in a typical brick and mortar commodities industry. It is time that Apple or the App Store take the lead in a market place where regulations are still significantly lagging and either antiquated or inappropriate , in the rapidly changing virtual market place, and develop policies that protect the consumer of their commodities and hold vendors to the usual implied contractual responsibility to their consumers. Consideration could be given to how “possession” is defined and perhaps those who have previously purchased and now “possess” an application on their device can, by way of a grandfather clause, be protected from back end coercion into subscription charges that we’re not part of the original purchase terms and agreement. Sorry Calibre for the rant, but you deserve it!

Keyboard Covers Up Fields/Buttons, No Way to Resolve

When trying to input server data, the keyboard covers up the buttons and fields, preventing you from seeing or selecting covered fields or even clicking ‘OK’ to confirm your entry. Also, unless you’re going to pay a subscription for what largely appears to be an app with the same functionality as the free web page created by Calibre for accessing books on the server (which works great in iOS except for the constant need to re-enter credentials as though I was accessing a financial account), you’ll be confronted with annoying ads for the paid version every time you open the app. I might consider paying if it was a one-time fee, but a subscription model is for me, like with most things, out of the question. I’d rather pay $200 once than $5 per month—I don’t want to have to remember the charge, and I want to have something approximating genuine ownership of the things that I buy.

Worked great until the upgrade.

After the upgrade, this app seems to have a mind of it’s own. I also lost all of my books. Plus I can’t get the app to do anything now. It was just a big waste of money! It bothers me that the developers released a buggy update with KNOWN PROBLEMS and seemingly no concern for potential loss of an entire library of books. It also bothers me that when I bought the app, I believed it to be a one-time purchase. The new developer is planning on making this app subscription based. Great, now we are going to be nickeled and dimed on something that should be free to use after the initial purchase. Based on the way we have been treated by this developer, I will be reluctant to purchase anything by Mr. Cohen again. Greed and ineptitude have ruined a great product.
