Lies

2022-06-21

Let me start with this: this is in general a good app for filming videos, but if you are looking for something with FULL manual, which ProMovieRecorder claims to have, then you are not in the right place. It has manual control, but everything starts out in auto, and there is no setting to turn it into manual. It labels the aperture as exposure, and whenever you adjust it, it immediately adjusts the iso and the shutter speed in order to amplify the change. If you set one setting to a specific value, no matter what you do, you will always find it wandering back to whatever ProMovieRecorder 's crappy AI system thinks is best. It will not let you follow the 180 shutter rule, and you cannot adjust the aperture for depth of field without ruining previously set settings. The anamorphic setting doesn't crop the image, it stretches it, resulting in displaced gnarly images, and lastly, ProMovieRecorder that claims to be free, in reality costs $2.99 to remove a watermark. Lies.

Great App; Poor Service; Needs Work

2022-07-22

While ProMovieRecorder is awesome in overall functionality indeed, I find it disappointing to say the least that it does not seem to support backing up content directly to iCloud or other cloud services and does not make that clear. This makes it difficult if I have to export videos to another device or manually to a cloud after every use to ensure they’re captured and kept when storage is low. I had to restore my phone recently due to some software issue, and while everything else was backed up to iCloud, ProMovieRecorder wasn’t, so I lost a TON of content with little to no hope of recovery. If it’s going to promote being for iOS users, why not fully support iOS functionality? Overall, I have enjoyed using it, but certain features or the lack thereof should be made more clear. In 2021, if I purchase an app on one iOS device and have automatic downloads enabled, I expect ProMovieRecorder AND THE CONTENT to be on each of my other devices. ProMovieRecorder needs cloud functionality within itself for a better user experience.

Missing Developers

2022-08-23

First of all I want to say that I really do like ProMovieRecorder. There’s functions on it that you can’t find on FiLMiC Pro or some of the other apps I have use like a Moment. I wish that it had the ability to record footage in log for flat but it doesn’t and that is a minus. But the one thing that really gets me is if you buy pro movie or pro movie plus you have to pay two separate charges but they are exactly the same app. I have message the developers in the message box inside of ProMovieRecorder several times asking them what is the difference between pro movie and pro movie plus and they have never replied, even though when you send the message it says that they will reply within one or two business days. So I’m guessing that they just don’t want to respond to my question or there are no developers that still maintain the message box and respond to questions.

It’s meh

For an app that claims be to be “pro” it doesn’t bring much to the table in terms of full control. For example you can control the shutter speed but if you try to change the change the exposure ProMovieRecorder undoes your settings in order for you control it. Compared to Filmic Pro which gives you full control over the camera’s exposure settings. Also, unlike Filmic Pro, ProMovieRecorder doesn’t have false color or focus peaking, which you would think would come built in into an app carrying the title of “Pro”. Despite my gripes over the lack of full exposure and camera control it does do some things well. I like how easy it is to set your resolution and control the zoom, focus, and shutter of the camera. However, the lack of full control over the camera is what, to me, earns ProMovieRecorder a 3/5.

File Storage

2022-10-25

ProMovieRecorder is amazing and would have given it 5 stars except one feature that needs changed. Using an IPhone and it saves the video internally in turn eats up a TON of space on the phone.

What I would love to see is a way for the user to adjust where it saved the raw file from being internal in the phone, and then having to go in and upload to the cloud or whatever to be able to store the raw file after your done to an external drive so the user doesn’t have to use phone storage.

I’m going to try a flash drive attached and see if I can shoot video then immediately upload it to the flash to get it off my internal storage. It would be nice if it did it automatically.

It’s OK

2022-11-26

Well it’s really good but it keeps kicking me out so I would recommend to buy a different app but if you really want to make a movie just by the sun not by it meaning by like see it it’s free that’s what I like but the only thing that’s really bad about it it keeps just kicking you out it’s like goodbye and you like trying to see was the problem but I won’t let you get in again because it just keeps kicking you out and kicking you out it just gets really annoying and for some reason I just want to finish this thing I’m making won’t let me because it says not I’m not doing good and didn’t say that but I just said I like kicking me out for some reason you get kicked out many times and it just gets annoying annoying and then you try to leave it and then the next day it’s just does the same thing it’s just super annoying sometimes I just wish it would work better so I just gave it 4 1/2 stars

Great tool for the price

2022-12-27

I’m a professional videographer and this is a great app for turning an iPhone into a semi-professional camera (and looks professional in a limited range of shot setups). The individual lockable control over exposure, focal point, and shutter speed are great, as they are features missing from the iPhone’s native functionality.

I kept it at 4-stars because you have to use iTunes on a computer to grab the video files from the phone, which feels a bit clunky and makes it impossible to share the files with airdrop straight from the phone. I really wish I could save them to Photos or could create a WiFi share page like some other apps do.

Overall a great deal and solid app.

My first video app I’ve bought. Love it.

I am a professional filmmaker. I wanted to use my cell phone to shoot a brand new series that I am producing and editing and hopefully selling to a production company or network.

I wanted to use my cell phone as opposed to fussing with my Canon camera and lenses. So I was researching, watching videos and reading reviews for weeks and everyone was saying that Filmic Pro was ProMovieRecorder to use. At $15 for ProMovieRecorder or $20 for ProMovieRecorder plus the remote app, I didn’t want to spend that money for an application. So kept digging and found Pro Movie.

The morning of my shoot, I found a video where a guy did a side-by-side comparison with filmic pro and pro movie. I watched it while showering and getting dressed. Lol. He went to each feature and then shot video in the exact same location to compare apples with apples. He said he preferred pro movie over filmic pro. I love how the footage looked and decided to get Pro Movie. And at $2.99, it was right up my alley.

I downloaded it while I was on set and learned it before I did my first shot. It is super easy to use, the footage is dynamic and it is user-friendly. I do recommend having an external microphone because the audio may not be to the level that you want.

This Is definitely for those who want achieve professional looking video without the price and burden of buying a $1000 camera plus lenses, who want to use their cell phones and want to use a super easy app.

Great video camera!!

2023-03-01

There’s a lot to like about this video app. Remove the water mark and you have a video cam in your pocket, which only costs a few bucks to get, unlike some other apps that have you paying a monthly fee. If you need THAT kind of video quality you won’t be doing it on an iphone camera. It will run the battery when you have ProMovieRecorder running even if you aren’t recording, ie, waiting for an event to start recording. Like all video recording, a tripod or other steady mount makes a big difference.

One of the best apps out there for video on iOS

2023-03-30

There are a few apps I would put in the category of being "worth your time" (if you're into video editing/media production on any real level) - this is one of them. While I'd list it towards the more "consumer-friendly" end of the spectrum, as it doesn't necessarily have the same level of features as say, Filmic Pro does, it still can easily compete with iMovie and other similar apps, including apps that are priced a lot more than this one (which is a steal at only $3 for a full-featured app without restrictions). Worth checking out.

Overall Well-Rounded App

2023-05-01

There is a lot to love about ProMovieRecorder - the granularity of control is beyond other apps I’ve tried. I use ProMovieRecorder for slow motion capture on my iphone 11, and the results are great, but every time I start ProMovieRecorder it has lost all the settings and I have to reselect everything. Perhaps the most annoying part of that is it quietly switches from 1080p@240fps back to 60fps, and so the slow motion capture just doesn’t happen. Also, the control overlay does not fit on the screen correctly - the controls on the left are truncated off the screen, including the indicator for frame-rate. ProMovieRecorder has been a long time favorite of mine despite these buggy issues on the iPhone 11. I really hope the developers are able to fix these issues, ProMovieRecorder is still my favorite and I still give it five stars because it deserves five stars.

Fantastic!

2023-06-01

In all the years I've been using iOS, I've never found an app so worthy of a 5 star review. ProMovieRecorder has every control a pro videographer could need to shoot with an iPhone, including a 2.4:1 aspect guide setting? Who thinks of that? Brilliant app, thank you for making it.

The ONE thing you could do that would just knock ProMovieRecorder out of the park would be to put a live view on the Apple Watch app. I know that may be difficult, and there's battery life and the such to keep track of, but that's actually the reason I was browsing ProMovieRecorder Store and found this one. Apple Watch live view please!

Don’t waste ur time with other apps

2023-07-03

I’ve just started getting into photography on my iPhone and was looking for an app that gave me me control over my camera. I tried like five apps this one included and this one was definitely always my favorite. They interface was easy to understand for beginners(like me), but still has most of the Pro features just like filmic pro or moment. I’m still considering paying to get rid of the watermark, I think I’ll do it cause ProMovieRecorder delivers. Don’t waste ur time with other apps especially since this one is free(other than the water mark)

Best out there

2023-08-03

I don't usually rate apps, but this one deserves every single star possible. For Christmas, I upgraded my lousy 4S and got a 7!! The camera is amazing, so every day in 2017 I'm recording a one-second video, and then compiling them all at the end of the year. I want the footage to look absolutely outstanding. Found ProMovieRecorder, and THIS IS THE ONE. I wouldn't use any other! The control over focus, white balance, shutter, ISO, etc. act like a DSLR. This is going to be the best year ever thanks to ProMovieRecorder. Pardon all the cheesiness of this review, but I'm serious, you have to get ProMovieRecorder if you want to record legit videos.

Why This App Is A God Send

2023-09-04

If you’re a photographer on the go chances are you might not always be equipped with your gear. In the event that you want to shoot, with your mobile device, would be more convenient with ProMovieRecorder.

Apple doesn’t integrate fine-tune control settings for the perfect shot. This wastes the potential of devices with 4K capabilities. It’s not the best or biggest lens, but for small shoots and videos it works fine.

You’d probably get the most out of ProMovieRecorder if you’re camera is almost decent. And if you’re into photography, or editing. Otherwise it isn’t for everyone who just likes taking selfies.

Makes iPhone camera worth using

2023-10-06

The iPhone camera hardware takes great sharp video, but lacks any user control. I got tired of the auto exposure always shifting either too red or too blue. AE lock was too tricky to set at the opportune exposure. I used my gopro for most video because you can manually set white balance and ISO levels to match the lighting without it shifting every time you moved the camera, but I hate fish eye. ProMovieRecorder gives me all of the control I need to make awesome videos without the distorted fish eye of the gopro. Also has extra resolution options like 1440 and shutter speed settings. I think my gopro may be taking a rest and I’m back to the iPhone camera.

Love this

2023-11-06

Great app for shooting video. I love how in 4:3 mode you can use more of the sensor and there’s less of a crop. Took off one star because I wish iso had an auto feature that wasn’t linked to the shutter speed. If you unlock the exposure controls they do auto expose but this makes the shutter speed variable sometime with poor results

In other words in low light situations with auto exposure the shutter speed will dip down and match the frame rate (for example shutter speed of 30 at 30 FPS) making motion too blurry

But in bright situations shutter speed increases and becomes choppy giving the footage a strobey anxious feeling

I want to use ProMovieRecorder in a documentary sort of way so It would be amazing to not have to worry about exposure but also maintain control of the shutter speed

I think the best way to solve this and something I’d love to see as a new option under settings is a shutter speed lock during auto exposure so ProMovieRecorder would only adjust iso

Anyways still a great app and I like using it more than filmic pro. The layout of the menu is clear and easy to navigate

Great presentation! Great App! Couple of things.

2023-12-08

Very satisfied so far. Good controls, good performance. Great video player. Appreciate the details of videos everywhere. Well thought out. Thought I’d try the free 30 days watermark by writing a review as well before buying the in-app purchase for removal. Which at 2.99 is a no-brained compared to other apps I’ve been trying.

A couple of problems so far. They are small, so others need not worry. Maybe they can be fixed.

1. Using a Bluetooth remote to start/stop recordings when using a lightning based external audio source (or audio interface) causes the Bluetooth remote to not function. A Bluetooth remote in iOS built-in camera app still works in this type of scenario. Hoping for a fix.

2. External audio interface must be set to 16bit PCM or app crashes on AAC (the default selection) immediately after hitting record. Not sure if this is fixable as it could just be the design of audio interface but again, built in iOS camera works and records fine. A fix would be awesome!

One more thing...

Keep it up developers! ProMovieRecorder rocks!

I love ProMovieRecorder. I’ve worked in tv production , with experience in live broadcasting, and a lot more . So when I was looking for an app that offered the control that I wanted while recording video with my phones camera. I found a lot of great reviews, and after using it for the last few years. I have to say ProMovieRecorder is by far the best that I’ve seen, used, or heard about. Yes there are some free apps similar to this one and offer great features. They just can’t beat this one. Hands down one of my top favorites of all apps . Do yourself a favor and spend the couple bucks for ProMovieRecorder . You won’t regret it! At least not if you know what you are doing and trying to accomplish

I really liked this but I couldn’t get it to work once I upgraded iPhone

2024-02-09

I tried to use ProMovieRecorder as I did on my iPhone XS but I upgraded to the iPhone 11 in December and like I wrote above, it wouldn’t work and was not “purchased “, even though I had already purchased it on my previous iPhone.

Please help. I would give it 5 stars for anyone who needs more control for recording with their iPhone but because of the issue and wanting more money to use all of the features when I had already paid for it; so for that reason, I cannot give more than 2 stars. I’d re rate with a 5 star review if that issue didn’t exist.

Take it from a Cinematographer & DP

Here it is:
I’ve tried every camera app on here. And while others are ok, this one is the best. I’ve been shooting for over 30 years. I’ve shot on everything. My first camera was a Super 8. I’ve worked on tv shows and music videos. That’s my background. ProMovieRecorder is the top of the mountain. I even use it as a B camera or C camera when I need it. Coupled with great editing software like Final Cut, Adobe Premiere you should be fine. Sure, you’ll have to tweak it some, but not as much as the others. And rather than buying a film camera app that you have to take soooo much time to make it look “right”, this by far is the one you’ll need less to work on.
I’m excited to see what future film makers will do with ProMovieRecorder and also pro film makers !
Have fun and MAKE A MOVIE !
