I was very excited when I learned that there would be a mobile version of the octopus card, which I regularly use for business trips.
But my excitement went quickly:
1) I could not get a mobile octopus card as the app would not accept Apple Pay, resp. the credit card behind. Another payment option was not available to me.
2) you can not choose „HKD“ as currency to use for top-ups. You have to choose GBP, USD, EUR, etc and this leads inevitably to higher banking fees . Not good

The tourist-version of the octopus app only allows topping up in foreign currencies. The exchange rate is about 5~6% worse than market rates. If you have a credit card that doesn’t charge for use abroad, this rate is very unattractive. This is completely unacceptable and not what you would expect from a place like Hong Kong.
Extremely bad exchange rates -> buying a Card in Hong Kong is much cheaper

The Payment can not be done in HKD, instead there is a payment in a different currency requirement at an exorbitant and deceitfully exchange rate (more than 5% higher than normal).
I would recommend to just buy a physical card in the city to not support this fraudulent app.
