Great concept but doesn’t work on my iPhone8

2024-11-19

I want to give a 5 star, but it doesn’t work for me somehow. I turned on this app highlight for Safari as well as the very app, but there’s still not an option to highlight when I select any text. (It’s not just on one given web page, I’ve tried many different web pages and it just doesn’t show me a this app highlight option.)
——
UPDATE:

I received a reply from the developer. Thanks for trying to address my concern, but I’m afraid I have followed the instruction exactly as you have listed on your webpage before, but it simply does not work on my iPhone. I can only provide a honest review as to how it works for me personally.

I have NEVER been so disappointed in a developer team

2024-11-19

Why you chose to replace the original this app with this AI garbage is beyond me. I cannot fathom taking such an incredible app, stripping it of every useful and appealing feature, and reintroducing THIS as though it's actually something to be proud of or even worth looking at.

Was the market not oversaturated enough with generic AI “assistant” apps? I am genuinely confused on the thinking here. I actually had to double check to make sure I’d opened the right app. This is outlandishly far from Liner ’s original purpose, and there is literally nothing innovative, unique, or interesting about it. I could have previously listed off at least a dozen reasons why someone should choose Liner over alternatives; now I can’t even think of *one*.

I RARELY write reviews. Something has to be either above and beyond or truly abysmal. It’s incredibly sad to see an app go from invaluable to worthless. For now, I’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates or changes in hopes that it will go another direction and become something I can use and love again.

Why I can’t use the highlight function

2024-11-19

I have been using this app on windows and they worked perfect there although AI summarize function was little annoyed. Now, I got an ipad and I found this app is on iOS too, so I was trying to use it for highlighting again to only find out it doesn’t work here. The biggest reason that I’m subscribing its function is to mark on the web site and I wish I could do the same too. I don’t understand why iOS this app team decided to replace Liner ’s identity instead of adding a new feature to the original function.

Predatory auto renewal FOR $175!!

2024-11-19

I wanted to try Liner to see if it could take pictures you input and give good suggestions. I signed up for a free trial and tried it once and it had very unsatisfactory results. When I forgot to cancel the trial, it charged me $175 for another year of it. $175 for Liner is a rip off, the picture analysis it did was not correct, not helpful, and so far off that I stopped using the service altogether. The fact that it costs $175 a year is insane, other reviews have mentioned that it once costed $50 a year. I have reached out to support for a refund but they only have an email address. They also don’t let you cancel your subscription, the only thing I can do is cancel my payment in PayPal. This seems like fraud, how are you supposed to cancel your payment if you didn’t use PayPal? A $175 YEARLY renewal instead of a monthly renewal is also very predatory. A monthly renewal would give somebody the chance to cancel while not having to pay almost $200 if they weren’t able to cancel by the renewal date.

FREE TRIAL BEWARE

2024-11-19

I was trying out the Pro version for 14 days under the impression that I’d be notified by email before I was charged for the annual subscription. I received no such reminder. They do not offer refunds either. I’m in the process of getting a chargeback from my bank, but I have not cancelled the subscription yet, as the moment you cancel it, they downgrade you to the free version, even after having paid for the full year. So I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. Email support has been unhelpful, they have not sent any documentation supporting their claims. As for Liner itself, nothing too special, at least not for what it’s asking. Just a heads up for anyone looking to try their Pro version, don’t fall for the shady business practices I fell for.

It was great at first

2024-11-19

At first I found Liner really useful. But just now after using it for a week or two, it suddenly popped up a notice that I reached my limit and “Basic users are limited to 7 highlights per page”. This was never the case before (and I was not on some kind of free trial of premium or something, either). I guess this is a new restriction they just put on basic users, to try to get you to upgrade to premium. Unfortunately Liner is completely useless if we’re limited to 7 highlights per page. So don’t even download it unless you want to buy the premium version. I don’t. The free version is useless to me, 7 highlights is nothing. Now I’ll just delete Liner from my phone and delete its extension from Chrome.

Hard not to think of this as a scam.

2024-11-19

Honestly, I used this service once and it was just ok. It wasn’t reliable enough for me to use on a regular basis. I meant to try and use it more often but my mind was someplace else. It was a terrible year for all of us. Up until then the service was adequate. Since it needed to be more reliable it only deserves 3.5 stars from me. However, my efforts to try and cancel my subscription have been completely ignored. There is no way to cancel the subscription on line. A subscription that I honestly do not remember opting into to renew. I received an email a few weeks ago warning me that my subscription was about to automatically renew. I had to cancel to avoid charges. The emails sent me to their website and gives you instructions to go to this link then click on this then that and when you get there there’s text that in order to cancel subscription you must submit the cancellation by email. I did. However, my credit card was still charged. I emailed them again asking about the charge and I once again expressed my desire to cancel and demanded a full refund. My email was ignored. On Friday, I opened a ticket using their customer service client online. It is now Monday and I have not heard one peep from them. Not one email, text, or smokes signals. Nothing. It is extremely difficult to not view their lack of response or acknowledgement as nothing but fraud. They leave me no choice but to dispute the charges with my credit card company.

Built to solve a great pain point, but app/company is pretty sloppy

2024-11-19

It solves a great need - to highlight as I am reading the page. But… 1) On Liner , highlights are hidden under profile, while their “social” and “discovery” features are highlighted which surface irrelevant and crappy recommendations 2) Zero customer support! As a premium paid user, sent them a request to link two of my accounts that use the same email (but one with password and other sso) - no response! 3) Highlight stopped working on mobile safari after a recent ios update (company says they are working on a fix). But the simple Share > Open in (this app) feature from mobile chrome and safari also does not work, when trying to use it as a stopgap workaround to reopen a site in this app’s own in-app browser for highlighting. (4) Search by tag does not work - throws up highlights that clearly does not have that tag!

Reeks of unprofessional product management

2024-11-19

I really like the concept behind Liner but the execution is less than ideal. This review is concerned mainly with the iPad version of Liner . Issues that I’ve found: Highlights from one article get carried over to other articles in your folder completely randomly. I had to manually delete each of the highlights to keep the organization clean. This would happen with every article in the folder.
Then there’s the premium subscription! I paid almost 50$ for it and it’s only for a year! Considering how buggy and incomplete Liner is, that’s too much money. But that’s not all! I never received an invoice or subscription confirmation email or anything remotely similar. This is when I realized there is seriously something amiss with Liner. Now I regret having paid that money. Very unprofessional!

Works well, until it doesn’t work at all without $$$

2024-11-19

Really simple and intuitive highlighting, and integration with Chrome worked smoothly.

BUT after I had highlighted a few lines, it demanded that I upgrade to Pro. Liner flashes to the upgrade screen every time I press “highlight” now. Couldn’t even make it through my first document.

Nowhere can I find where it says that basic highlighting is a “Pro” feature - not sure what Liner is even useful for otherwise. This is a classic bait and switch. Also...$14/month??? Shame.

Writer Beware

2024-11-19

A compatriot suggested Liner to me, encouraging me to try it because he had used it to write essays and tasks for college papers in the classes he had taken and received Grades of A on those papers.
“It’s fun, it makes everything easy; you really should try it!”
So, I did. What a complete waste of time and effort on my part. (I’ll ignore the cost - for this review)
I entered the ’concept parameters’ for a story I am writing - sans AI - adding details and information that would be included in the book that the story would be a part of.
Three times out of 3 attempts, the AI app came back with such disappointing paragraphs I at first assumed I must have not entered the information correctly. After the third attempt I deleted Liner and hoped they wouldn’t charge my credit card for the waste product they were pedaling.
If you are a writer. Then by god and anything you deem holy; write it yourself.
Trusting AI is like sending a thief into the mansion of the human mind, to steal one specific item, and having that incompetent thief return with a bag filled with trash objects and no sign of the one object you needed most!

New Restrictions to Basic Version

2024-11-19

I have had the basic version for some time now. I rated it three stars due to equal my love/hate of Liner . For function, it’s great - based on that alone I’d give it 4 stars. There are enough little things that would keep me from rating a full five stars, but nothing major. I used to use it quite a bit and was fine with the color limitations of the basic version, etc. I don’t utilize it enough to justify the subscription. However, recently - the last several months perhaps? - I’ve been limited to 7 highlights per article/doc. This is a deal breaker. I don’t use it enough to buy a subscription, not even at a fraction of what it costs. But b/c Liner itself is not terrible, and the creators obviously have an vested interest making money in order to keep Liner current and adding improvements, so I can’t pan the whole app just for that. For the purposes of a bare bones basic plan, I wish you’d raise the cap for highlights. I’m not a prolific highlighter, but I usually use it for length articles in order to pare it down to the bare minimum. I hit the limit every time now. I’ll keep checking in for awhile to see if they change the cap, otherwise I’ll look for another solution.

Great idea but needs some bugs fixed

2024-11-19

This is a fantastic idea for an app. It does a great job of taking any webpage and turning it into something that can be highlighted and annotated. However, there are some bugs. You can quickly highlight any complete sentence or you can highlight individual words easily. However, if you wanted to highlight a segment of a sentence, it does not allow you to do so. Also, only one color is allowed in the free version, and I think at least two colors would be nice.

Needs work

2024-11-19

Man, you all are almost there. Some if not all of the drawbacks may not be your fault. If Liner worked like I thought it would, it may very well change my life. I'm plagued by valuable information I've saved, but don't remember which bookmark/browser/app/notebook/device & on & on & on.

However, selecting text in iOS chrome/pocket did not present the yellow dot option from the demo. After toggling this app on, I'm presented with this error: "Share web page or URL to this app to start highlighting. Using only sentence or image is blocked by Apple".

If I need to open/share across several different apps, it defeats the purpose for me. 5 stars for a brilliant idea, minus 2 for poor integration execution.

Great in many ways, stinks in one specific way

2024-11-19

this app is an amazing app, I use it for exactly what it was made for: highlighting websites. I would give it a higher review however, if there was some mechanism so that you could go back to the place in the webpage where you left off on your last highlight. As it is now it takes you to the very top of the webpage that you were working on, with no way of going to the location of the most recent or any highlights for that matter. If you were to make that change I would definitely improve my review.

Awesome idea - want this to succeed

2024-11-19

I really love the concept of this service and it does seem to be continually getting better. However my biggest gripe is that the actual mechanics of highlighting are very problematic to the point of complete frustration. On either MacOS or iOS it is painful trying to select the exact text you want to highlight. Far too often it selects the entire page which is NOT what you want. Now perhaps this is dependent on the way the content you are trying to highlight is formatted but it seems to me there should be a safety mechanism that stops the runaway highlighting and some kind of deceleration to give you finer control. If this app’s devs can fix this problem they will have a winner for sure.

Lots of potential

2024-11-19

this app is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. An easy way to save the things I read into a seamless format. The idea is great, but Liner could use some tightening.

For one, sharing to this app out of other apps straight up doesn't work for me. Not sure why that is but that seems like an essential feature. I get the impression that this app doesn't play super well with other apps?

Second, Pocket integration is another great idea but could be better with organization. Would like to see some basic Pocket organization or filtering features within this app app.

Finally, the highlighting within Liner itself could just be snappier. Right now feels laggy and clunky.

Lots of potential here with Liner but as of right now it doesn't work super great. I really hope it improves as I love the concept.

Great, just needs better support from Apple

2024-11-19

Update: the ads for premium get annoying, and the subscription costs are insane. I’m a casual user, I’m not using this for work, and I’m just not going to pay $10 or more a month forever for this. Give me a one time payment and I might consider it.

Fulfilled my need to highlight web pages and store snapshots of them for research, writing, sharing etc.

It seems that Apple doesn’t provide the right API for them to be able to capture a highlight from a selection in Safari, it would be nice if Apple would add that feature for them.

As is you just captor’s the whole page and Liner makes it easy to add the highlight right after that.

Good Idea terrible execution

2024-11-19

You don’t get unlimited highlights. You get unlimited amount of pages you can highlight but not number of highlights per page. This is intentionally deceiving. It’s be great if I had premium but if they were upfront about maybe it’d be different. So I know you probably don’t care (and I never write reviews) but you lost my business. I’ll come back if I can actually get free highlights

EDIT: I’m super impressed that they read my comment and updated their basic plan so you get Unlimited highlights even in the free version. Very nice, I will recommend this to my friends. Thank you for listening!

Helping me pull it all together ! Gia text reader to go with it

2024-11-19

I just like poking at it with the color coding. I couldn’t imagine how having a text reader & the highlight could help tie up lose ends.
I’d read & reread things trying to write & rewrite different bits of information just to absorb what I could remember. Just a few weeks later anything I’ve put my eyes That was interesting. I have listened to read & re read to me until I understood what I was listening to t can pull any of it up, Boom look at it. Whatever it was, whenever it was. In my hands.
The ability to have it all together tied in color coded time stamped. Just waiting for me to dig in & soak up.
The time it saves alongside the energy it took for a fraction of the Information I was able to read & remember . Game charger. More like life changing.💪💰🤓
