The chess app is excellent and one of the best ones in ChessTigerPro Store. If you like chess as a beginner it's excellent. As a club player it's pretty good. There are two other ones (Hiarcs and Shredder) that are just as good. However, the one deficiency in ChessTigerPro is that you really can't play timed games without having the computer at full strength. There is a feature where you can a play timed game but the engine is always set to full strength. That makes no sense. You should be able to set it to the playing strength you want and play a timed game ( say 15 0) and have it play at a lower elo strength. This is something that shredder can easily do. Also, if they add a better timer I hope they make sure the player forfeits. How else can a club player really practice with ChessTigerPro?

While it isn't the strongest chess app (stockfish and smallfish easily beat ChessTigerPro) it is still strong enough to crush everyone I know, and I know some good chess players (nationally ranked). ChessTigerPro is unparalleled as a training app, which is why I love it. It's playing strength ranges from moving at random to grand master precision with of 50 levels in between, which it makes it easy to improve one small step at a time. Analyze your games after you play them to see what good moves you missed. Analyze thousands of included grandmaster games to learn from the best. You can customize just about anything you might want from a huge list of options on the settings page. Sometimes ChessTigerPro is wrong and the opening book isn't spectacularly large or diverse, which is why I would also recommend downloading smallfish (which uses the stockfish engine), but the chess tiger engine is still much stronger than you. You have something to learn from this

Love it I think it’s the best! I am really learning how to play chess better it’s at 4.9!! OMG!! That means. It’s the best in the world!!!!!!!!!! OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can play up to 400 elo can’t do 500 elo higher I tried 3040 elo once and I lost. Well what do you expect? the chances of me winning is 0.1 well maybe %1.5 but otherwise it’s great! You play you win your happy and victorious but then you try 2050 elo and you lose and you very sad lol but that’s chess! you might Win 5 matches and you lose 2 but that Chess Life! You win some and you lose some. I play at 100 elo lol and I win always well 100 plays at random and well overall it’s great. Well I got up to 1000 elo it is great! Update it quickly!! Guys make it 5.0!!!!! I love it! Thank you chess pro!!

There are numerous chess apps but this is still the best one! The interface is light years ahead of all the other ones. The only thing I would want (and there's hardly anything else) is to have the extra option of ALSO having the auto-off suggestions during ANALYSIS mode (maybe an extra option that says EVEN DURING ANALYSIS). I often use the Play Both Sides to track a game in progress or my own game against another computer, and then I want to think about the best moves BEFORE I use the suggestions to see what Chess Tiger recommends.

I've stop playing chess in my twenties (54 now). I needed this tutored app to get pass the beginner's ELO's at first. I can now play up to ELO 1600 without tutored or taking back any moves.
I just got done defeating ELO 2030 without tutored/or-take-backs but I did handicap 2030 by spotting a bishop (queen side) at begging of game from 2030 pieces.
I now just let myself loose before I would use the tutored or take back a move. When I play the grandmaster level ELO 3040 I have to spot its' queen to win (still hoping to get better then where I'm at now!).
So thank you very much for creating ChessTigerPro and the wonderful tutored that got me back to playing good chess again!!!

All these great men have enjoyed a great game of chess with someone in their lifetime. Possibly with a joint in their hand, I see you BenFrank! Download ChessTigerPro and play it everyday! When you wake up. During lunch. Before you go to sleep. And believe me, in about a week, your name will be amongst those great men I mentioned earlier. As Seinfeld once said, "The Pin Is Mightier Than The Sword" or was that Reinfeld?

There are a lot of features to recommend in ChessTigerPro. I am a high intermediate player (about 1650), but I haven't played since the 1970s.

I really like that the trainer part can increment your "opponent" in increments of 50 points to allow you to always play against someone just a little bit better.

I also like the access to so many Grandmaster games.

I haven't yet tried the variations feature, but that looks very good, too.

There are a couple of features I would like that would take a lot to implement:

1. A way to learn the various chess openings, including commentary about why certain moves have proved more successful than others, and the ability to link to the grandmaster games that use that opening.

2. An endgame primer. I appreciate the developers chose specifically to have you learn by playing, rather than theory; however, the endgame is one area that would lend itself to a little deviation from this.

This is the best chess app that I've tried. I highly recommend it!

update: still great value but it still doesn't label the opening variations. Please add that! I got my first computer chess game in the eighties, and it wasn't all that good. I'm amazed at the level of play achieved on an ipad, and it does not seem to require being connected to the internet, meaning all the computation is taking place on this tiny platform. It is even more amazing that I can play on my iphone, and while I win, it is great practice for openings and midgame combinations. I tried playing on my ipad with wifi disabled just to be sure it was not phoning home, and at least on that platform, the quality of play seemed the same. I'm astounded.

Love ChessTigerPro because it feels like you’re playing against a human. It doesn’t do “crazy” good moves (even on opening moves) like stockfish that most of the time it’s doesn’t happen on normal human against human chess game. It might not be as strong as stockfish but at 1350 level, it got a considerable edge against me so far, but that’s good because that’s what i need to constantly improve. A month ago started out at 800 level, now i’m at 1350 and i feel i’m getting better. See up to what level i can improve to. The “analyze my game” feature is very helpful but at times the analysis doesn’t seem to convince me but most of the time computer is right!

I’m retired but decided to take up chess again. I have tried several of the chest apps and found that chess Pro was perfect for re-learning Chess. And you can set your opponents chess level at a reasonable level. That means you don’t have to play against Kasparov every time

A major advantage, for me, is that you can play one opening over and over until you can get it right (at a high novice level- 850). It allows me too learn how to properly develop in the opening and make it there’s a middle game. I can make moves, get in trouble, then get suggestions, and then back up and see how I got into a bad position or a winning position . That is a very good way to learn.

ChessTigerPro has a lot to offer, historical games to study with on the fly analysis. Best move tips, unlimited redo's for trial and error learning, plus many more. I don't usually pay this much for an app, but this one is worth the money.
The downside, I now have a good idea of how bad I am at chess. Hopefully for you it will be telling you how good you are and how to get better.
(Update: ChessTigerPro is worth 10 times what it's listed. The power of analyzing your games, won or lost is priceless if you are wanting to improve)
(Another update: I noticed a review saying Hiarcs might be better. I bought it and while it is good. I still like ChessTigerPro much better.)

ChessTigerPro is very well done. There’s real-time and post-game analysis of play. Get real-time suggestions offering the strongest move for up to four different lines, that can be switched on or off with the press of a UI control. The UI itself looks great and offers many visual and game customizations. Set up positions, adjust strength of computer opponent even during a game and really too many options to list here. Regarding this engine's strength, for us mere mortals, it is significant, however, with the advent of Alpha AI and the recent Stockfish advancements, a wish would be to have access to those engines in ChessTigerPro. Nevertheless, I own the Pro version of this excellent app. Keep up the great work, Christophe!

BEST CHESS APP ! whether you are a newbie or a Chess expert ChessTigerPro is totally amazing. I have been using ChessTigerPro for quite a long time now and it’s honestly never let me down. and No, I am not getting paid to make this review but yes this chess app is definitely worth the purchase. If you’re truly a chess player, you wont regret this purchase. Not only does it teach you but it also gives you your best moves, there is an option to play with the computerx10 (it can and will beat you in less then 10mins) or the other one witch chess in 10 moves. Either way its an incredible app.
Just purchase it! Totally worth the money... perhaps should be valued a bit more but well worth the money.

When you don’t have a person to play against, you use this. Regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a master, you can play against numerous levels of difficulty and even different playing styles. After your game, ChessTigerPro analyzes and points out your good and bad moves. There’s so much to learn from this! ChessTigerPro is worth every penny of the $10 price tag. The analyzer is very powerful. ChessTigerPro also allows you to set up any position which is great for studying with books. ChessTigerPro coupled with books of your choice are an amazing tool for taking your chess game to the next level. I don’t want to try to list all the things ChessTigerPro can do because I’m afraid of leaving some cool out. Just buy it and be amazed for yourself.

I read a bunch of the reviews before purchasing and most of the complaints were about the adds with the free version. So, this led to my decision to go ahead and buy it, just to avoid this. So far ChessTigerPro is easy to understand with the exception of the Game Analyzer. I have to admit that I have no idea how to get anything from it. However, I’ll give the game the benefit of the doubt and put the blame on me since the rest of the game is GREAT. Oh, one more thing I find confusing is I don’t know how to learn the different openings. ChessTigerPro says it knows thousands of different openings but I have no idea how to know which one I’m using/learning. Overall, great app and $8.99 for countless hours of entertainment is a great deal. Once I figure out how to use the nuances of ChessTigerPro I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more!

This Chess Engine has prepared me to defeat level 2200 chess players. My whole chess universe is centered on ChessTigerPro. I have marveled at the ingenuity of the software logic and ease of take backs and suggestions which reinforces the learning process of my complex games I study. I believe every person involved in the creation of ChessTigerPro deserves the highest accolade and achievement chess can provide. I have never ever praised a product in this way and can only say thank you for the best Chess Engine written to make everyone’s chess game that much better! The scores of chess games from the Masters is just icing on the cake which opens a Pandora’s box of analysis opportunities to excel ones game and reinforcement. 5 stars times infinity is my rating! If you want to learn chess the right way, ChessTigerPro is a MUST HAVE!

As you play against ChessTigerPro , each time you decide what your next move would be (and before you make that move) you ask ChessTigerPro to show you the best move you could make. Often, I find that my chosen move is not the best, although it is not clear why. I then make the recommended move, and discover (over the next couple of moves) why that recommendation was made. As you get better, you find that your move more often matches ChessTigerPro 's recommended move. You can then move the quality of play up a notch, and find yourself playing a more challenging opponent. This incremental approach (combined with ChessTigerPro 's play-by-play tutoring) is a really GREAT way to learn how to play better chess. If you truly want to become a better chess player, ChessTigerPro is well worth the price.

I like ChessTigerPro because we’re given the option to play by suggestions. This option helps guide us to learn good moving habits, yet still allows overriding when inclined to take a chance.

This feature allows beginners to learn quickly by example, offering options while retaining a feeling of security. This is beneficial if you desire to play, even if you’re tired and might make mistakes.

I highly recommend ChessTigerPro if you play chess for the enjoyment of relaxation, learning new techniques, or to satisfy your competitive spirit. ChessTigerPro is a good teaching tool for beginners by showing the squares the pieces can occupy, if desired.

I agree with Oscarclever about being one of the best chess apps I’ve used, for clarity, ease of operation and learning, features, strategy teaching, board options... just well done!

My only recommendation is that I wish, when referring any moves using alpha-numeric referencing, that the rows and columns of the board in use also be labeled, in like manner, for ease of referencing consistency. This would especially help beginners become more familiar with move terminology.

When I first tried the free version and then I turned on the suggestions, I saw all the green lines flashing everywhere, I’m not sure what I was thinking, maybe I thought it was a bit confusing. I deleted ChessTigerPro . I got a bit more experience with other apps, videos, etc. I came back to it and just absolutely love the green lines for the main lines and suggestions. I immediately bought the pro version. You can play the trainer, at many chess ratio (ELO) levels. So you can gradually ratchet up your experience level, but still get the suggestions as you go. Or you can just play the chess program at max level, it’s tough! And then there is a really large library of famous games you can watch and analyze, Fischer-Spassky, Fischer-Byrne, Anand, Karpov, many others. Fantastic value , I recommend just getting pro version

Before giving ChessTigerPro anything less than 5 stars please compare with others out there. The coaching and analysis functions are the best for iPad. It is visually pleasing and not overdone. Chess Tiger is a very interesting engine to play. If you want chess engine variety, then also play against Shredder Chess and Hiarcs, both to strongly recommend. These are the three best engines for humans to play on the iPad. Stockfish is stronger than any of the three, but if you can beat this, then you are really IM/GM material. I have not found an app using Stockfish as its engine that is as fun to play as these three. The only thing ChessTigerPro needs is the ability to email/export all games in PGN rather than individual games.
