Looks like it could be a good game. I wouldn’t know, though, because it keeps crashing and forcing me to restart before I can get anywhere in it. Such a shame.
by Eddie Rad
Impossible to play because of the constant crashing
by MattGoBlue
App crashes about halfway into every head to head match. Makes what could be a good game unplayable.
by Joshypants333
No matter how many times I restart it or reinstall it….it crashes in the middle of games. Ya outpghtta be able to make a decent none crashing chess game. Cmon
by Kdwmngl
Didn’t even get a chance to try the game out….kept crashing on my ipad
by Johnme L
App crashes often and games aren’t recoverable after crashing. One star for the lessons, and one star for the puzzles
Also impossible to solve one of the puzzles. How do you capture a rook with a rook without getting captured?
by Squirestrat
It wouldn’t let me get past the screen that wanted me to log into Netflix which I don’t have to I tried to sign up and got a screen that it won’t let me get past telling me about the price of Netflix
by Michael Börgeson
I was most looking forward to playing other people online in the ELO matches, but it simply doesn’t work. You can’t see your opponent’s move without exiting and re-entering the match, and you have to repeat the process for every move. I’ve won all of my matches simply by my opponent not realizing I’ve made my first move and them timing out.
This game would be great if that would be fixed, but that part of the game is useless at this point while being the most interesting part of it, so it would be great if the developers would fix that. Until then, it’s not really a chess game as much as a Queen’s Gambit game sans the chess, which is pointless.
by Tyler_Dominguez.
TheQueensGambitChess crashes before it even starts.
by SC*5
There was a way out of a good amount of them but the game automatically mentioned checkmate. Seems a bit odd. I’ll go to other chess game platforms.
by DrHotBunz
1 star for 10 min per move in multiplayer. Not 10 min per game. It’s abused ALL the time. FIX IT
by A1thatchickcaroagain
i cant even open TheQueensGambitChess without it crashing. the game hasn’t loading once.
by Sacked Again
Literally unable to complete a game. 1 star for the music.
by Eff Tick Mas
I deleted this after 5. Minutes and downloaded a different free chess app.
by Thedudeabides9
Was really into it and then all of the sudden it started crashing during games vs characters. Once it started crashing it would do it every single time and I would have to start the game all over again. So frustrating.
by Skopdx
It seems like it would be a really fun chess game except that it constantly crashes when I play against computer opponents in matches. Needs to be fixed.
by Pbodyyyyy
Crashes and closes out a lot when using the review move feature.
Nice game though but seems like a lot of bugs need working out.
by Kiteh1853
easy to just farm coins by forcing repetition, also pretty buggy. crashes in the middle of games somewhat frequently
by ZongGod
But the chessboards themselves are really hard to read. Just stick to simple graphics please it will make the game a lot more usable.
by TeeZone01
TheQueensGambitChess lets me sign in and then I get a black screen for about 2 mins before it finally crashes and exits
by Ghstjiifc
Does not find and load ELO marches, which would have been the best part of the game. Deleting
by TBD3125
The problems with this game are all immediately resolvable by the developers. If done this is an incredible game.
1) There is no in game feedback mechanism, thus the only way to provide notes is to post a bad review like this.
2) There seems to be no awareness of the relative junk vs play clicks. What I mean is that as you are moving through exercises early in the game, you may be clicking once, moving one piece, and then you have to click 7-8 times including through the overused coin system and repetitive “cut scene” animations just to get back to play where again you will make one move and then be back to click click click click click click click click to get back to play. The exercises are GREAT, but the getting through them is aggravating.
3) They are weird gaps in what it let’s you analyze. Once you win or lose you are immediately exited from the game. So the most important thing in the game to understand, you can’t even see it. There is a way back, but it’s clumsy / non-obvious and there’s just no need for the system to immediately kick you off the board and force you to figure out how to get back if you want to look at it.
ADDITIONAL
4) The ”missed win” functionality is incredibly frustrating because there is no way for it to reveal what the system is seeing. This is super stupid, because that means it’s withholding info it has about how I could improve. Particularly around ways to achieve checkmate as a new player. Could you imagine a human coach just sitting by you saying nope, nope, nope, but never showing you what they see no matter how long you struggle?
5) Similarly for openings, the “Memory Games” are a weird/insufficient way to teach this. You should be able to pick the opening you want to practice and rep it against various opponent moves.
6) I have begun experiencing the incessant crashing others have noted. Weirdly it started once I tried to start playing normal practice games with all the helper stuff turned off. It is near unusable with the number of crashes I am experiencing.
These are really dumb problems on what should be a great chess game.
by Smallrock98
At least 3 times today in the middle of an ELO game, “Sorry, something is wrong with the server”, and getting disconnected!!’ And no, it is NOT my connection so don’t even go there! Fix your server. And can we not have a 10 minute timer in ELO games? Tooooo long. This isn’t the US Open. 5 minutes would be good. Some of these player’s driving me absolutely nuts letting there timer go for 9 minutes before making a move. These idiots doing this, well it gets old. Make it 5 minutes please.
by Casnh
I like the concept but I ended up deleting because I found it hard to visually discern pieces and the controls were clunky. Difficult even to just select the piece you want to move.
This was on an iphone, though. It would probably work better on an iPad with more screen to work with.
by Your Friend From That One Time
This game has been great, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. There is one thing about it that greatly bothers me, and that is that I can’t study the board after a friendly game. When I win, I can’t go back and look at the board to look for other outcomes and when I lose, I can’t even usually see how I’ve lost because the board gets covered immediately. It’s a very obnoxious flaw, and it is likely an easy fix, and I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t been updated yet.
by Bcbeatty
Too many button presses to do the trainings.
No way to skip the lessons once you’ve started the animation.
TOO MUCH ANIMATION!
Speed it up.
by Jileha
My biggest beef are the distracting chess boards used to match the story settings. Glare on the board, weird piece shapes, pieces that look too similar due to lack of shapes and contrast (Moscow Park), etc. It’s fine to use them for “authenticity” (although standard basic pieces would be the most authentic ones), but please give the player an option to switch to a neutral standard 2D representation.
by So Addictive Fun Game
Game is good but constantly crashes when playing against CPU please fix
by FortuneCookiie
Great tutorial and style of the game, nice music but it crashes mid practice games.
by Saul The First1
The goods:
Chess is fun
Queens gambit is a great tv series (book is ok)
Graphics are adorable
The puzzles are great
The chess vs is fun
The “view” ability is cool for when you get stumped
The bads:
Loading takes forever
When you do not move perfectly it is so annoyingly time consuming when you are told you are wrong, then have to start all the animations all over again. Makes me want to rage quit. Simplify that by just a FAST auto reset with the “not quite right” dialogue.
by Kurth11
I guess they don’t have many people playing this game online so they’re using bots a lot. The game is very interesting but without real players to play, it’s not for me.
by Mr. Prator
I downloaded this game through the Netflix app. I love being able to play any game without ads, especially board games. My only complaint about TheQueensGambitChess is moving any piece in 3D is awkward sometimes. I have to press the square several times because it does not register (or the piece is blocking the square so I thinks I’m deselecting the piece). I could switch to 2D but that ruins immersion.
I’m not even sure if there would be a better way to streamline anyway, expect maybe tap and hold would allow you to virtually pick the piece off the board so you can see all moves, and then tap the square to release
by SiempreVuelo
Along with strong critique the system is designed to make you slow down and think before making moves.
by St.Luc
Great game and no glitches on the iPad. The iPhone play is not the greatest but I've enjoyed the extra screen space on the iPad.
When following the journey, the lessons can be more helpful with hints for beginners who have trouble understanding the concepts (guarding, cross/check etc.)
Suggestion: as the player progresses through more exercises within a lesson remove the hints. This will allow the concept to stick and teach the player to think about future uses of this application because of the understanding of the concept.
But overall loving it...on the iPad.
by JJS717
Overall the lessons, puzzles, and online play is good. There are a few errors in the puzzles where the move required to complete the puzzle is actually the wrong move. Also, game reviews are good, but not great. It would be better if you could see follow up moves on the review when you see a best move that you missed.
by Brett Denbow
What a fantastic, beautiful game. I’d like the frequent repetitive instructions to be optionally turned off. Doing the puzzles is so fun, as you work though them the same “solve in so many moves” instructions aren’t needed.
by Nightshade77
There are some bugs in selecting any piece to move. It is confing where the piece goes. I noticed a bishop and a knight were sitting in the same spot. It must be a bug. Will there be a patch to fix TheQueensGambitChess next time?
by Space Hippo 9
I knew most of the moves of each player all my life but had no understanding of the game and it’s strategies. My 27 year old son has played chess for years but I don’t play him as I always lose. Watching “Queen’s Gambit” several times I realized that playing well takes study, practice, keen observation along with a memory for strategy. Your app is a good start for me to begin. At 77 years old, I’m really enjoying the process.
Also, the graphics and building blocks for learning the game are super!
by Nemesis From Heaven
I have downloaded and used 40 chess apps over the past few years. Some are really good, some are crappy. This one, however, is completely different in just about every respect, in that incorporates the better elements of what I like about the others. Perhaps because it’s based upon Walter Tevis’ book and the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit” it has thematic elements that tie everything together. In any case, I’m hooked and I’m learning and growing and enjoying every moment !
by NoLieReview22
🔥🔥So far...but y'all asked for a review in the first 30 minutes of the game so this is subject to change. This is the type of reviews you get when making a chess games. Lol 😆 ill give it 5 stars ✨ if it keeps up the story line
by RSWertens
No sound??
by MigzillaNYC
The Queen's Gambit is an extraordinary chess game that perfectly blends strategic depth with accessible gameplay, making it a must-have for both seasoned players and newcomers. The design is impeccable, featuring a beautifully crafted board and pieces that evoke the elegance and intensity of the game portrayed in the namesake series. Its innovative rules add a refreshing twist to classic chess, challenging players to think creatively and plan meticulously. The game encourages critical thinking and problem-solving, making each match not just a battle of moves, but a thrilling narrative journey. A solid 5 out of 5 stars for its engaging gameplay and aesthetic appeal.
by Ajayway
I am 81yrs of age and loved the movie. Purchased a chess board that could play me so that I could learn to play. I wish the pieces could be a bit larger, even with my glasses on it becomes a strain. But I do like the look of the game and the fast feedback you get & the privacy factor is nice as well. Looking forward to continuing!
by Xojewlzox
I am a chess novice and am learning so much. I appreciate the beautiful graphics and quality step by step tutorials. I’ve been able to pass my knowledge onto my children on the real board game.
by Leighann007
TheQueensGambitChess is great very every skill level . If you have no idea how to play, it will teach you all the basics: how to identify pieces; how to set up the board; how to move each piece; and how to capture your opponent with each piece. It allows you to practice the basic steps , with immediate feedback. As you progress , so to does the challenges and teachings. I liked the movie, so I enjoy the familiar locations and people within TheQueensGambitChess that inspire me to keep learning and progressing . So far, I’ve not experienced any glitches.
by Adri12309
I love chess, and wanted to become better, I don’t have time to set aside to learn with others, but TheQueensGambitChess teaches you in such a fun way! Plus I loved the queens gambit
by Kimwinchest
Honestly I loved the series I wish they could make a second season of her being a mother 😂 and still winning the championships to keep her title.
But I will say I learn a lot from this game, it was fun, the details was good and I enjoyed playing it when I had time to learn and relax.
by Captain Gimpy
I was into the show. I like TheQueensGambitChess , I like how it’s slowly introduces you to the game, along with some of the intricacies and kind of stairsteps you into competence. It also helps that I don’t need to pay for a separate subscription, so there’s that. because I already have Netflix.
by JWilmoth592
I’ve dabbled in chess. I have a good understanding on the movements of the pieces. Game will touch on strategy that’s a bit of what was missing for me. However it could do better at explaining some things. Good game tho.
by Reviewer 2434
Used to play chess a lot when young and really enjoyed the show so decide to give the game a try’s and loving it so far !
by Serph2704
Very good and educational game. Just wish there was “help” button when you can’t figure out a move during the different puzzles
by Mattttttttz2
I was playing another chess game and this is literally 100 times better… I like the educational aspect… I’m a millennial and I used to read books on how to play chess better but can never improve the way that this game can teach me
by Zamion66
I have recommended this to several people looking to get into chess. It goes through many scenarios and helps players see options and understand the movements and basic concepts of the game.
by Quejia
What can I say?… I freaking LOVE this game!!!! 😱😍🥹🤩 If you love the show, then come play the game! 😁👌❤️💕 This literally hits me in the feels! 🥹🥹🥹🥹 I miss Beth Harmen! 🙌🙌🙌
by GGabl_
I’m honestly really loving the game, i love the queen’s gambit and i’m so excited to better myself as a chess player with a themed game. So far no complaints
by DomoRoco
Fun game, I kinda wish that the board was a little bigger though
by Blumenkaft
I love the way this is organized! I haven’t played chess since high school, but after watching the show thought it might be fun to play again. This is perfect for helping me remember rules and tactics and also has some useful tutorials for several openings referenced in the show. And I don’t have to embarrass myself playing against a real person.
It’s been really fun brushing up with the ‘help’ of all my favorite characters. Game progress is well integrated, and the graphics are beautiful and very detailed, with the levels moving through many of the places Beth Harmon visited. I played (and lost) Mr. Shaibel a few times, but there’s lot’s of puzzles and memory games to develop skills besides just playing games.
It’s a new game, so I’m sure they’ll work out the few (very minor) bugs in coming updates. If you want to learn the game (or just brush up) I recommend. Thanks Netflix!
by Derek89111
Great game from what I’m able to play, hope they fix the crashing problem on iOS. Then I will update to 5 stars.
by Ct13983
Love this game, so far. It includes the nostalgia from the show while teaching you as much as you want to learn about chess. Well done!
by ATM-100
Still tbd on whether I’ll learn chess but the chess puzzles I’ve played through so far are fun… love the free with Netflix model - so many good games
by Donevyn
Good game with lots of ambience from
Series. But I can’t figure out how you review a game you’ve played. It mentions it can in Netflix ad for game.
by Im Super Fun75
The game is so good
by Clownfishman
This version of Chess is one of the best learning tools. I would think it might be THE best for kids.
by Sk8rboii94
Still at the beginning but true to the show! Great way to pick up chess and boost your confidence! Love it!
by PawlyWalnuts
Just started playing… play, controls, starting challenges are engaging. Teaches you as you go, great carry-overs from the show.
by Conservative Ranter
I’m astounded at the quality of this game. It’s entertaining and feels like I’m in a college class on chess. Well done!
by Rbouthillier
Absolutely love this game. You really learn great chess moves and you feel like you are apart of the show.
by Mmabee42
I didn’t know how to play chess before this show so I am happy that there is a game tie in
by Likeabandit
Looks beautiful, good music, it honestly has convinced me to go ahead and watch the show.
by AlwaysSL33PING
Great show, great chess game rendition of the show, and the graphics are well done for it being a mobile game
by Dan4USM
Just played the opening stage and loved it. Hope they get into tactics and openings as the game progresses.
by Toxdon
Console! (X-Box X). Would definitely play this great product from beginning to end…again!
(Well I’m have problems with the higher rated AI players)
by Swat Kin
Just started back playing chess and was lucky to come across this game. Now I gotta watch the show too.
by Ghostrunner2323
I love this game and the puzzles. I wished the characters like Beth actually talked vs. having to read everything but otherwise this is a lot of fun.
by Tekamona
I’ve learned so much already! Challenging and engaging totally recommend if you wanna learn how to play chess like never before
by Skydiver Reader
Takes time to know what is happening, but I think if my students download TheQueensGambitChess, they will improve their game tremendously!
by No2snow
Enjoying the strategy and build up. Being older I miss moves I would have seen when younger. So far - very fun and interesting.
by Dolphins777
I’m a complete novice, so I appreciate the lessons. One thing that would make it better (if it’s not already a feature that I just haven’t noticed yet) would be to be able to click on the opponent’s pieces to see what they are called and what moves they are allowed. I’m still learning which piece is what and I haven’t memorized what they can do yet. I can see where I’m vulnerable to an attack, which is super helpful, but I’m not always certain which of the pieces are the ones that are threatening me. But so far I love the graphics and everything. I hope I’ll soon be able to play without the helpful hints.
