Good concept but needs improving

I’ve been logging my practice pretty consistently since I started using TonicMusic recently. I like the concept but it needs some improvements. Here are my thoughts.

- The minimum practice time per session to start logging XP should be limited to once per day. If someone is practicing in chunks throughout the day instead of one practice straight through, it punishes the user by removing the XP from those minutes of practice each time they start a session. I know there is a little break button, but that doesn’t work if I want to take longer break and come back. Just reset the minimum daily.

- Unlocking a new room shouldn’t put you back to a bare room with just a floor. There should be some sort of middle ground if you have graduated from one room and are unlocking another so it doesn’t feel like you are starting from the beginning each time.

- I requested a work/piece be added to TonicMusic a few weeks ago and still have yet to see it. I’m not sure what the timeline is on getting works approved but it’s too long currently. If someone is working on an etude, they would have already moved on before it was even added to TonicMusic . An option to type in the work would fix this and many less people would have “just jamming” on their sessions.

It’s also unclear how to get some of the color modifiers for the rooms, but I may have just missed that.

I hope the developers read these and consider these improvements which would greatly help TonicMusic !

i miss the old tonic

I don’t know if its just me but i miss the old tonic. before it was laid out like a tiktok kind of thing, a lot of people would join my studios and now with all the updates im lucky if I get one person. and just so you know i am now on suzuki book five. ( for those of you who dont know, its basically it has really complex pieces ) so yeah, i miss it because i would ACTUALLY meet people who would be supportive and stay. however there have been some cool things added like the ability to record yourself within TonicMusic which is nice, but it is soooooo hard to get powerups and stuff so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE change it back cause i miss the old tonic.

Some bugs(?)

I gave TonicMusic 4 stars a while ago but my experience has gotten worse and I don’t know if it’s TonicMusic or something else. TonicMusic fails to log the time I put into certain works sometimes and also doesn’t log when I join some studios. Additionally, after I finish my practice sessions, I end it and it will just sit on a loading page for forever until I eventually have to completely close out TonicMusic , get rid of the tab, and reopen it. I love the idea and it was really motivating me to practice but it is so buggy that it takes away from my enjoyment a little. I still love TonicMusic , I just wish these problems weren’t present in everyone of my practice sessions. 😅

Great app overall but buggy on I-phone SE

I love TonicMusic, it’s an incredible concept and motivates me to practice more.

I have an iPhone SE so the screen is much smaller than usual iPhones, this causes certain screens, especially the “you upgraded your room!” Screen to not show the continue button as it is below the screen and there is no scrolling option resulting in me closing and reopening TonicMusic to exit the screen and get back to the home page. Would be great if this was fixed!

A few issues, but overall great

Pros: Fun to use, cool to hear others practicing and cool to interact with groups. I also like how user friendly it is.

Cons: When I’m practicing, I cannot use my metronome (also on my iPad) because the sound cuts out, and I’m afraid to try using drones in case I blow people’s eardrums out. I also wish that more instruments were already on TonicMusic , and that we didn’t have to vote to add them. I play cello, which is pretty common, and I wish my Tonic profile accurately reflected that. I wish there were also a wider range of customisations for my avatar— it looks nothing like me, which isn’t a dealbreaker, but from the glasses colour to the body type, it’s not me. It would also be nice if I could use Tonic upside down/in landscape mode for when my iPad is charging.

One BIG thing— please make it so that I can be in a studio without it counting towards my practice time. Sometimes I’m just messing around and I don’t want it to skew my stats.

I know the cons list looks huge, but overall I highly recommend TonicMusic. It’s fun and I know I’ll use it in the future. The pros are definitely work than the cons.

Great app!

I love using Tonic, the group chats have been a wonderful place to build community, and I enjoy seeing who’s working on the same pieces I am. And, it’s one of my favorite things- you can even see how many hours have been practiced by all the musicians on Tonic in a day. I do have one thing I’d change though, I’d love to see how many total minutes/hours I’ve practiced in all. Not just for a session, but it would be cool to see on my profile page not just my experience points, but how many minutes I’ve practiced. (And it’s a free app, I mean, what’s there to lose lol!)

Great app

I really love TonicMusic. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to interact with THE Ray Chen! I learn & it’s motivating. I love the challenges. Everyone is always encouraging & positive.

The only suggestion is making a rule for during open studios for people not to engage in their own personal side-bar conversations in chat. When Ray Chen has open studios, the same group of people use his open studio as their personal group chatroom & it really takes away from the experience. I have to sift through a bunch of unrelated personal messages to get to people’s comments & questions about Ray’s playing. It makes it harder to engage with Ray & makes it more difficult to get a chance for him to see a new person’s comment or question. & frankly I don’t want to read about people’s personal lives when having the chance to interact with Ray Chen. (I’m sure Ray doesn’t care to read about it either, mid-practice, when he’s sharing his time with us.) Maybe limit the amount of times someone can send a message in a period of time (or open a chat feature on TonicMusic where people can talk in private). Something!

Thank you! Again, I love TonicMusic .

So Motivating! Amazing App!

The first four years of my life I used to hate practicing. I never ever practiced not even one day. I just didn’t like it. Then my teacher said I was really slow and “sub-par” considering that I was playing for four years. My parents never let me play for other people because they said I never practice. But one day my aunt told me she saw a video of Ray Chen and Tonic. So she told me to try it out. After a few months I did and it was awesome! It’s so motivating because you can join challenges and earn multiple badges, and decorate your (online) playing area. Ray Chen was so considering that he made tonic not just for violin players. It makes me excited for the next day to practice. It’s made me change my perspective on the violin and made me a better player. Also other people can listen to your music and so can you! I’ve met so many other incredible musicians. Thanks Ray Chen! Your the best!

Great App for Practice

Tonic has really helped me track my practicing, and helped me focus in on a few techniques. The only thing I would suggest is giving people the option to have multiple instruments linked to their profile, instead of just one. Also, I would like a feature that, after you practice, it gives you a breakdown of what you did during that session.

Love it!

I love using Tonic to track my practice hours and keep me motivated. I’ve also enjoyed connecting with fellow musicians via the group chats and virtual studios.

TonicMusic can be glitchy sometimes, but it has gotten much better since it was first released. Overall, if you don’t care too much about practice “points” and are just here for the music and community, you can easily overlook the occasional glitches and enjoy the benefits of this platform.

Thank you tonic developers and staff.

This is a great application with a lot of potential. It has a few glitches here and there, but I’m sure the developer team will get it worked out. It really doesn’t take away from the overall current experience. It’s a great way to socialize with other musicians, especially if you currently don’t have a way in real life to. I’ve been using 46 days and met many awesome musicians of all calibers.

You need to get this app!

Tonic truly helped my practicing. I now look forward to it, because I know that there will be people listening and that helps me try my hardest. It’s totally free, and there’s no ads whatsoever! 🙌 Everyone on TonicMusic is so kind as well, everyone really just wants to talk to each other and give helpful feedback. I love how the more you practice the cuter your studio gets. For example, I started with a completely plain room, and now I’ve earned a plant and a lamp, and my studio is coming together! If you are a musician, get TonicMusic! 🎶❤️

Tonic cures my practice blues

I love everything about Tonic, but I especially enjoy opening my studio, where anyone may drop by to listen to my practice time…this has greatly helped reduce my stage fright and anxiety levels. I really enjoy exchanging feedback & encouragement with fellow Tonic musicians. So many incredible instrumentalists from all over planet Earth, interacting and making beautiful music? It’s the best. Plus I love the avatars & studio rooms. Tonic makes practice so much less lonely and so much more fun. Bravo!

Great motivation and community!

As an adult beginner at violin that’s just starting to learn I think TonicMusic is amazing! It makes a game out of practicing and encourages me to push myself to stay consistent. The groups are great too. Whenever I have a question it’s amazing to know that there’s a group of much more experienced players out there who can give me their advice.

I was a little nervous at first to listen in on people’s studios or to even make my own public but everyone is so friendly and it’s really interesting to hear everyone making progress from the very beginners like me to the pros!

Thank You Ray!!

TonicMusic is the best practice app on the market… and it’s completely FREE!! Through TonicMusic I got to meet so many classical music fanatics like me and even led me to meeting Ray Chen in person! Listening to people practice is so fun and especially being able to give feedback (or feedbach)! I love when my friends come to listen to me as well!! Not only do I get great practice out of it but I get to have fun talking to friends who enjoy music as much as I do!! I give TonicMusic 5 stars and I highly recommend it!! Now go practice 40 hours!! If you’re reading this you’re not actually practicing! Make ling ling proud!

Best App Ever!

I’ve been using tonic actively for nearly 180 days and it has transformed my playing and practice habits drastically! With praise and encouragement from many many people including: Jasmine Choi, Ray Chen, and Piergiorgio Wilson, I’ve been motivated to continue playing piano and violin. The tonic team is friendly and helps make our tonic experience the best! There are tons of group chats where you can share thoughts and get heads up on getting to meet Maestro Ray Chen! You can also join other people’s studios to learn from others more experienced and encourage younger artists and practice leadership! I don’t know how people can practice without TonicMusic ! I think tonic should be used by every single music student in the world!

Amazing way to practice

TonicMusic is the best way to practice. It keeps me motivated and consistent with my practicing. It has improved so much. The idea is brilliant and the execution of the idea has been an amazing experience! I’ve had such a great experience using TonicMusic. I think every music student should use it! Not only does it help with practicing but the community within TonicMusic is something that is so precious to me. Being able to chat with and listen to other users practice is an amazing experience. I was one of the early users and it changed a lot but it’s been a really great experience! I’m not really one to write reviews but I want the creators/developers to know what a great job they’ve been doing! I love Tonic!

Great for everyone 🥳

My daughters love Tonic! But they say it could use some help. Like the characters need more work. More customization for people to get more into it. Also it would be nice that you should be able to press the profile picture to see it better and it would be nice to upload your own photo for your banner. And maybe be able to make videos and upload them? Idk it might help for more fun. My daughter has made two best friends on tonic and even more other friends. She plays 13 instruments and is 13 years old. She used to hate practicing and playing but now loves it. She used to have a violin teacher but she hated it. Now she wishes she could have a teacher lol.
Amazing app for teens and adults 💪🎶🏆

Must-Have for Musicians

I love TonicMusic. Before I had it I would procrastinate to practice my instrument and whenever I did practice, I wouldn’t stay on task very well. Once I got TonicMusic , I immediately started to practice more efficiently and more often, getting a lot more done. Earning XP, streaks, challenges, and leaderboards are all part of this motivation to practice. Also, playing for other musicians around the world on here helps me get ready for a performance/audition because I know someone is hearing my sound, and before nobody would hear my practice. Playing on here has improved my playing overall because I am more used to playing for people now and more confident whenever I play my instrument. This is also a very good chance to connect with other musicians, by joining groups or studios, it really brings us together knowing we all have this amazing connection through music.

Great app

It’s a great app to keep track of practice and listen to other people play. Tonic has gotten me to practice independently more often too. It also has every song I’ve searched for except two movements from The Divine Comedy, but there’s a way to request new music anyway. So that’s great!! It’s a 10/10 app for what its purpose is and I’ll probably continue to use it for the foreseeable future.
