A Fantastic App

I’m a book blogger and new to Bookshelf. I read a mix of Advanced Reader Copies and Backlist as well as new releases a month. I loved that Bookshelf had the books I’m reading as Advanced Copies. I also love the note cards, as I’m not one that writes down quotes I want to remember, now I can just put them on a note card. I love the quizzes option, although I haven’t tried it yet. I’m also a big fan of the stats it gives you. I took a star out of the rating because in my phone Bookshelf stopped working. I press it, but it never opens. Luckily I was able to restore my purchase of Gold for the year on my IPad which seems to work great. Oh! Also, I love how Bookshelf has a timer or just let’s you read if you don’t want to set a timer, or if you want to keep reading.

Love this App so much!!

Not only can you track the books you have read and are set on reading in the future, BUT, you can now have reading sessions where you can track the time you read (through Bookshelf you don’t have to watch a clock and record it) and how many pages!! This is AMAZING for me. You can also of course rate the books and record notes about them as before. The new update has thoroughly wowed me! My favorite new feature is probably the data you get through the reading sessions!

The App I’ve been waiting for

This is exactly what I needed. A simple and elegant way to track my wish list reading, and progress through books. I love how the interface looks just like the Apple products, sometimes I forget I’m not in an iPhone book app made by Apple developers. The feeling of checking off a book as finished is great! Building up a virtual library of knowledge:) thank you!

This app is great!

I love the set up and ease Bookshelf has! My only issue is that I wish there was a “Did not finish” option. There are books that I didn’t finish for one reason or another that I want to keep track of, but don’t want them counted as a book I’ve read.
Currently I have a DNF collection, but I cannot remove it from the read collection with out removing it from my library completely.
If this feature could be added that would be amazing!

Great Way to Summarize Key Takeaways

I have long looked for a good way to summarize my learning when I read nonfiction books. Up until I discovered Bookshelf, I went about it in a haphazard, unorganized manner. Bookshelf helps me keep track of the books I read, and fully organize the information I want to retain and refer back to in the future.

No way to enter numbers with keypad

Bookshelf is beautiful and could be very useful, but there is no way to enter page numbers with the keypad. You have to click through or scroll through each individual number, which is incredibly inefficient, especially as you get farther into books. This needs to be fixed immediately, as it makes Bookshelf barely functional.

Love the sync!

I love being able to sync between devices now. Hopefully I can get it to refresh and work soon 😆
Is a desktop site coming soon by chance? It would make typing a lot easier!

Great idea, nice UI

Originally rated 2 stars because the search function didn’t work, but the developer fixed that. I’m excited to use Bookshelf now, its UI is very elegant and smooth, and it has some very convenient features!

Practical!

Very helpful and neatly organized app. Find nearly any book by searching for it and keep track of your at home library with ease with a great looking UI.

Greatness

I love Bookshelf . I usually listen to audiobooks so I am unable to write notes in them. My only fear would be the developer decides to stop supporting Bookshelf and I lose all my notes. Would love a way to export it all.

Concept is amazing, finished product not so much

I have been searching for an app with a beautiful design that allows me to keep track of the books I read and such. Bookshelf does just that. However, the search button is dysfunctional. It lags so much. I hope this can be fixed soon..

Seems good but the list of suggested novels is disappointing

I'm giving it an average review because I haven't really used it. The lack of diversity in the list of suggested best novels of all time was so disappointing that I couldn't continue in good conscience.

Great app

Easy to use, clean interface, exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Pay to chart progress

it's insane that I have to pay a premium even to chart my reading progress.
Bookshelf could put ads on here and allow users to chart progress without paying yet they've chosen not to!

Cool little app!

Update:
I originally rated Bookshelf 3 stars because of some usability issues. The developer responded quickly, and fixed all of them. Bookshelf is now much more enjoyable to use. 👍

One enhancement that I would find helpful involves what I imagine is a bit of an edge case. I'm currently reading a book that was self-published. As such, Bookshelf can't find a book cover for the thumbnail image. Currently in my “Library,” that book is represented by a blank book cover with the words “No image.” That's fine as far as it goes. The problem is that I can't tell what the name of the book is! It would be sweet if the name of the book could be used with (or instead of) the thumbnail in cases like this.

-----------
(Original review)

I want to like Bookshelf, and I wouldn't leave a review if I didn't care. But Bookshelf isn't yet ready for regular use.

First, I really appreciate the option of entering the book's title, author, and publisher by simply taking a photo of the bar code. Two thumbs up there!

Where I ran into difficulty was with the interface.

* I couldn't select a finish date without also selecting a start date. That bugged me. I don't particularly care when I started reading a book. It may be nice to have that option — but only as an option. I just want to jot down some key things about a book and get on with my life.
* Even after setting a start and finished date, the status remained set to "Reading List." That wouldn't be so bad except that...
* I am unable to manually change the status from "Reading List" to "Finished." (The button seems to be overlapping the trigger for the "Summary" section.)
* I had trouble setting the star rating accurately. Either the touch area is off a little, or it isn't large enough.
* After entering a summary and some notes and then scrolling back up, the stars in the star rating are half covered by the Summary section. Only by exiting back to the Library and reselecting the book can I see everything properly again.

I would be happy to pay a dollar or two for an app like this. But if it doesn't work without causing frustration, it's not worth using — even if it's free.
