A very useful keyboard, unusable because of one issue.

Another reviewer seems to be encountering the same newfound problem, but for me it’s always been there. After switching to this keyboard, the button to switch keyboards (a globe) disappears entirely, leaving other, standard keyboards inaccessible aside from going into settings and disabling this one.

Beat keyboard so far

I have been using it for a while, and I love it’s easiness, especially when I’m creating conlangs and such. This new update makes me so happy, but my one issue is the fact the the extended ipa (for disordered speech) is not accessible. My conlang has bidental fricatives in it, yet I have to copy and paste every time I need the symbol. Please add this 🥺

love it but there’s no way to get out of it.

I really like it, and I love using it, but the thing is the button for switching back disappears on this keyboard, so the only way to go back is going into settings and then disabling it.

I wish there was a ‘frequently used’ section

I installed IPAPhoneticKeyboard just to be able to use the letters “ɛ” and “ɔ”, for a language I am learning. I’m sure other learners have installed IPAPhoneticKeyboard just to use a few symbols or characters.

I wish the keyboard had a ‘frequently used’ section (like the emoji keyboard does) so that it’s easier to access the symbols I actually use, instead of going through the whole keyboard.

Overall, the keyboard is navigable and pretty straightforward. Great app!

Amazing! One issue

I absolutely love this keyboard. Everything about it is terrific. Except for one small thing. I’ve never had this problem before now but recently, whenever I switch over to the IPA keyboard, the button to switch back to my other keyboards disappears and I am unable to get back to my normal keyboard without disabling the IPA keyboard in settings. Other than that, this keyboard is wonderful and I was very excited to see the addition of the extIPA.

Love this App

Thanks so much for making this! I love everything about it except one bug:

I’ve got keyboard clicks turned off in setings, but the IPA keyboard still clicks anyway. I can’t seem to find a separate setting in IPAPhoneticKeyboard to turn off the sounds, so I’m stuck with it. The keyboard clicks make me crazy though, so could this be fixed in an update?

Good but one problem

This is a really good app. I have fun with it and sometimes type old English on it. Problem is, I’m stuck on teh keyboard once I add it, can you please add a change keyboard button please like other keyboard to switch? Thanks

Probably the best app I have

I primarily use this for conlanging but it's great for lots of things. Super intuitive layout, super functional, etc. I have a suggestion though that would make it even better: since I imagine most of us use IPAPhoneticKeyboard to transcribe mostly one language (at least at a time), be it real or a conlang, It would be nice if you could choose a subset of the characters to appear on a normal sized keyboard, for typing languages, since its unfortunately pretty slow to scroll thru all the characters you don't use for the few you do (which is definitely the only real way to make a keyboard w all the ipa on it and the best choice). If u could add a few options (for people working on a few langs at once) that would be sick too. Not sure how easy or possible that would b to implement but hope something can happen with it :)

ai ləv ðɪs æp

The keyboard is organized wonderfully, and looks great as well, the only thing I would want it to include is a feature in which I can put the sounds I use commonly in one section, but the convenience of the keyboard is already great, so I don’t really mind.

frankly the best app on iOS that doesnt make you pay for basic features

tho you should support them on github hoping to see the expanded and obsolete symbols and diacritics available since they say coming soon.

Awesome app for Lyric Diction!

Love IPAPhoneticKeyboard so much! I utilize it all the time for teaching Lyric Diction courses. My only (and I mean only) suggestion would be to fix the vowel [ʁ]. It typically types backward—though in some applications, it inserts correctly. Not sure if there’s a way to fix this, but it would helpful if it both appeared and inserted correctly. Thanks for this awesome utility! -Matt D.

A necessity if you’re into linguistics

I use this keyboard almost every day. It helps a lot for writing down how to pronounce names or foreign words or if I want to look up an IPA character I don’t know. My only issue is that sometimes when I’m using it it’ll randomly close and take me back to my English keyboard.

Great for vocalists

I’m a singer and voice teacher. I love having the ability to use real IPA symbols when clarifying diction with conductors, coaches, friends, etc. Works great on my iPad as well. I love the brackets—you tap the button and it starts you typing between the brackets so you don’t have to remember to close them when you’re done. I’ve shared this with my awesome nerd musician friends.

If you consider the price (free), this app is perfect

ðɪsʰ æpsʰ ɡɻʷɛɪt

It doesn't just focus on English phonemes -- you can actually type quite a lot and there are even functional diacritics. IPAPhoneticKeyboard is very sleek and arranges the characters in a sensible manner. There are minimal labels which creates a small initial hurdle, but I appreciate the minimalism now that I am accustomed to IPAPhoneticKeyboard .

The only major criticism I have is that if you try to sandwich a consonant between two dental diacritics (to form an interdental), IPAPhoneticKeyboard you are using may crash. You can use the advance symbol < ̟> to circumvent this in some cases, but it isn't immediately obvious how one would go about typing a bidental percussive.

Just what I needed!

EDIT: the keys for the OPEN FRONT UNROUNDED VOWEL [a] and OPEN BACK UNROUNDED VOWEL [ɑ] both produce the [ɑ] symbol when typed in the Apple Notes app. And the OPEN-ROUNDED LABIALISATION diacritic always manifests as a ? box. I still freaking love IPAPhoneticKeyboard, but can you fix that, please?

I’m in the early stages of the early stages of learning Scottish Gaelic.

I want to be able to transcribe the pronunciation properly when I write notes on my phone, and Gàidhlig has some phonemes that you just can’t type with your average keyboard: [n̪ˠ], [l̪ˠ], [ʎ], [ŋ], [ɲ], [ɤ], [ə], [ɔ], [ɯ], et alii.

Now I don’t have to switch to my Greek keyboard to type [ɛ] and [ɣ], or my Icelandic keyboard to type [ð], and no more copy-and-pasting the more elusive symbols like [ŋ], [ɲ], and [ʝ]. And the diacritics!

This keyboard is a lifesaver!

properly laid out

works well! it’s formatted like the standard IPA table which makes it super quick and easy to navigate.

my only wish is that the vowels would come directly after the consonants—the never used non-pulmonic & other symbols feel in the way when bouncing between consonants and vowels. otherwise it’s organized wonderfully!

Awesome + Useful

IPAPhoneticKeyboard is probably in my top 5 in terms of how often I use it and how much I love it. The fact that the developer is providing this for free is commendable and highly appreciated.

I haven’t run into any bugs at all, but I do have an inquiry / request: Is it possible to add diacritics for the acute-macron (a᷇) and the macron-grave (a᷆)? It would round out the contour tone diacritics, since (a᷄) and (a᷅) are already included.

Thank you for this amazing app!

Wonderful App!!

This keyboard is super neat! It’s soo much more convenient than copying and pasting over from an IPA keyboard online. My only complaint is that the buttons are a little too big so you need to slide more in order to access the opposite end of the keyboard. I’m used to typing on the Ukrainian keyboard which has even smaller buttons than English, so I wouldn’t mind smaller IPA buttons if it means less scrolling left-right!

Actual life saver

I’m studying Brahmi, and it’s a very frustrating experience when I have to go find and copy+paste the IPA for sounds. If you can believe it,ɡ̈ or ɡʰ are actually not that easy to find usually! This will definitely help a lot searching that stuff. If any suggestions, the addition of the smaller ɦ would be appreciated, it’s essentially equivalent to ◌̤, and used for some of the Brahmi consonants. (ɡʰ is not actually correct, the IPA for Brahmi gh should be ɡɦ, but with the h sitting higher upʰ, though ɡ̈ is synonymous with that anyways.)

Excellent app

I learned to spell phonetically in college.
It helps me pronounce names that are spelled and pronounced completely different.
I had no way to write it out on my iPhone ; until now with this keyboard. Thanks!
