Incredibly valuable

As a private pilot, I love Ventusky. It gives an incredibly valuable overview of how the air is moving, and how it’s expected to change. The visual display gives you an intuitive sense that’s hard to get any other way. It also shows details, like patches of winds you might not anticipate from a Surface Analysis, METARs, TAFs, or winds aloft. Other layers like temps, air pressure, Thunderstorms and freezing levels also help build your understanding of the day’s conditions. And it’s fun to look at big picture stuff all around the world.

Two minor complaints: Value numbers can be impossible to read against dark colored areas like storms, and don’t increase in size when you zoom in.
Wind streak lines are a bit short. I’d like to see more custom display settings like on the web version.

Overall very useful and great visualizations, use of data. But there is a data issue.

I use Ventusky frequently as we are at an altitude where wind can be a concern. Being able to see wind speed at various altitudes helps greatly.

Just one thing: there’s a bug in Ventusky when I happened to tap on the farthest day out (current day + 7, last three times of the day) where the shown wind speed jumps up to 230mph for all locations. Clearly this is a null data problem and not really an issue for normal use of Ventusky . Just wanted to flag it so the developer can add it to the bug list.

Which is my only other issue with Ventusky : the developer has many obstacles to getting in touch, providing feedback, etc. I’m posting this info here in App Store feedback as I’m hoping the developer is bothering to check this feedback. Recent lack of developer replies maybe suggests this won’t happen though.

Improvements Needed

I am both a pilot and an astronomer. I do like Ventusky as the winds are the most valuable aspect when preparing for a flight along with other pilot tools. However, there are no state or county boundary lines or other demarcations on the maps. So, you have to be extremely knowledgeable about the region and terrain under a thunderstorm or you’re just guessing as to its precise location. A weather app should be about preparation, not guessing. The Sun and Moon information doesn’t work at all and when it did appear once for me, the information for the date was incorrect. Other features are nice, but when it comes to needing up-to-the-minute radar, I’m going to have to stick with far better apps that afford professional services and pinpoint locations of storm systems, lightning and ground tracks. Thanks for the effort and I look forward to more improvements.

Good app... but one gripe

I really enjoy using Ventusky for weather. It gives you a detailed look at tons of different variables and helps you better understand how the weather around you works.

My biggest gripe is that I always accidentally tap off of my current location when I pan around the map. There are two ways I think this could be fixed. First, consider letting users choose between “tap” and “long press” on the map to set a new location. Second, instead of having to tap the search button and then current location, give us the ability to have a current location button always available on the map (just like Google Maps). This is such a frustrating experience for me when using Ventusky and is the main reason I didn’t give this a 5/5.

Love it

Came from “myradar” after that went downhill. Found the website, which is awesome, that led me here.

Had an issue with Ventusky not showing the forecast, coincidentally this is while a co-worker was trying tp get some customer service from cricket wireless. After a few hours of my coworker trying to resolve a fairly simple issue I sent am email to this app. They responded with an hour with the solution to my problem. My coworker never got her issue fixed. The funny part is how a weather company in Chzecslacavia was able to resolve my issue quickly, while cricket wireless couldn't figure put how to get a subscriber to navigate their website. Hilarious.

2 stars to 3 stars

When I initially wrote this review I got Ventusky because of the detail you can see with it on an hourly time frame. At the time of writing my initial review I rated 2 stars because after an update the 1 hour time frame was not an option anymore. Now the 1 hour time frame is back as an option so I will bump it 3 stars. My reasoning is even though the 1 hour is an option as it moves through each 1 hour time frame on a majority of them the weather doesn’t change at all until every 3rd 1 hour time frame frame. Also because of the developer response I got from my initial 2 star review stating that the 1 hour time frame being removed as an option was not true. I had Ventusky open in front of my very eyes, searched through numerous settings to try to find the 1 hour time frame that was not showing anymore.

Just what I was looking for!

This is Ventusky I have been looking for. Something to show me the more detailed aspects of the weather. The interface is good and the rending of the layers is crisp and fast. The recent addition of the widget is welcome as well. However, the said widget has one bug. When there is a high wind warning it displays the wind gusts out to a insane number of decimal places. I’m sure this will be addressed soon and I am looking forward to more layers and functionality in the future. This could very well become a best seller weather app for those wanting more than just your basic type weather app!

Pretty solid - Could be improved

To start off, I’ll say that I like Ventusky . I’m a pilot, so having some detailed information about the weather is something I usually keep in my pocket and Ventusky does that well.

For US users, it could be improved. For winds aloft, it would be nice to choose statue mph and nautical mph.

For US users, it would be nice to have state outlines in the map. As it is, it’s a challenge to get a big picture of weather systems because as you zoom out to see each system, you lose reference to the specific geographic location. Having state outlines would be very helpful.

For US users, and this is probably my #1 issue with Ventusky , is having the winds aloft being presented in meters. Changing the unit in the settings does not change the winds aloft in the map. You have to choose 3500 meters if you want to see what the winds are like around 11,500 ft. Very annoying.

But it’s a great app and I hope they improve it. I’d like to be able to recommend it to other pilots.

4 stars from me.
iPhone X / IOS 11.4.1 / runs well

Phenomenal app, one minor annoyance

The functionality of Ventusky is excellent, I use it constantly. I just wish that when I drop a pin (for example, on my house) the pin stayed there. Instead merely tapping the screen somewhere moves it. If we could input and save a “home address” (and possibly additional addresses, since we might want to track vacation properties, grandparents homes, etc) Ventusky would then be PERFECT. Or just save multiple pin locations.

It’s very annoying that I have to zoom in and find my rough home location every single time I use Ventusky , just so I know which wind gusts apply to me

Great app, but sometimes it doesn't work

5 stars because I highly recommend it. By far the best tool I've seen for predicting the weather at very specific geographic locations. Much better than typical weather apps and pages. And, it provides all sorts of helpful additional detail. Ventusky works even better than the website.

But, there's a problem. Starting a few weeks ago, Ventusky would not load on my iPad. It would start to load and then just die. My iPad is up to date and I've restarted it multiple times. Without the this app app running, I cannot get support nor report a problem. Ventusky Support button on Ventusky store simply takes you to the website, which does not help.

Fortunately, I guessed at a solution: Delete Ventusky from the iPad, the install it again from Ventusky Store. That worked. But users shouldn't have to go to that much trouble.

Developers, please fix this.

Hurricanes?

I live on the southern Atlantic coast and during hurricane season Ventusky is excellent for tracking the the perspective path of each storm. I find that Ventusky is a better and more reliable source than most weather reporting. Rob is the only weather guy on television that my wife won’t let me talk when he’s on. Ventusky allows me to forgo watching her watch him give her the weather. Ventusky seems to say the same that Rob tells us. Thank you for allowing me to not have to watch my wife watch the weather guy.

Weather app that doesn’t tell weather *UPDATED*

I work outside an use Ventusky to see how much snow is on the forecast. Ventusky has extremely inaccurate snow totals as it is currently telling me to expect 0.04 inches of precipitation in the next three hours. I’ve gotten more snow than that since I started typing my this review. I would think snowfall totals are a basic necessity for a weather app

The developer responded telling me I need to multiply the precipitation values by 10 in order to get the snow cover. That is still inaccurate because that would mean there is 0.4 inches of snow on the ground. There is currently 2 feet. The developer also stated I could simply use the snow cover map layer. That’s just as useless because it’s telling me there is 4 inches in the ground. Try 24

Great app with solid potential.

App serves most functions I want to see in a weather app but is missing key features of nearly all other competing weather applications.

First we really need to address the fact that there needs to be adjustable opacity for any layers currently enabled.

With that accomplished the second major feature needing to be added is map layers that are visible and not only when zoomed in. Standard features are typically Street, Satellite, and Terrain views occasionally coming in optional if at all. I think having Terrain view would be applicable to backcountry travel. This would assist in your abilities to read a weather system.

Fun and informative

I don’t need to see what the weather patterns in Czechoslovakia are but it’s fun to be able to. It is pretty cool to look at the wind currents throughout the world and see how it affects your particular neck of the woods. I like that this is much more in-depth than you’re a typical app. For instance I have heard that there was a big storm coming to the west coast of the United States and it was not something that was notable on a regular weather app but looking here I could see what was on its way.

Fully Loaded!

As most people know, weather is very fickle, and difficult to predict accurately. this app has come closer than any weather app that I currently use. Boating and fishing are my go to activities, thus wind is a very important factor when planning an on the water day, and this app has rarely failed to predict accurately. Hardly a stone unturned in Ventusky with all the features available from wind gusts, sea heights, water temperature, and much more. I highly recommend Ventusky whenever weather is a factor in making a plan.

Easy to use, extensive information

I have turned on many of my friends onto Ventusky because I love it so much,I don’t share things that don’t work and that are not comprehensive or accurate or effective. Ventusky is wonderful I use it every time I go out especially if I’m boating or going to the beach because the wind can really impact those outings. I find Ventusky a lot more engaging than many other weather related apps

My favorite live weather app

I've used Ventusky for a couple years now, and I've loved it since I first downloaded. This is by far the best live radar with an interface that is wildly ahead of anything else you'll see from any sort of weather station. All the technical additions and displays are so interesting to use, and it's awesome to scroll across the globe. Couldn't speak more highly overall, very deserving of 5 stars.

A clean visualization of weather models and large scale weather patterns.

I have been searching far and wide for an app that shows the HRRR precipitation model. Ventusky does that and more in a very easy to use and visually appealing way. It’s obvious that the developer cares and is actually responding to feedback from customers and working hard to make it even better. I highly recommend Ventusky for those looking for a clean visual presentation of weather models for forecasting and visualizing large scale weather patterns.

This is the best weather site I have used. it provides accurate long range weather information assisting in preparing for any type of event. I started using it during a past hurricane. I followed the storm days in advance as it approached while it was on top of us and after it past. I use it daily to check for all reasons. I have suggested it to businesses who need to know weather for scheduling jobs. Please keep up the great work!

Good Dark Sky replacement

In looking for an app to replace Dark Sky, this one seems to have all the features a person could want. Love that there is no tracking.

The interface is information overload. I appreciate there is a balance between functionality and simplicity. Ventusky errs on the side of functionality, which I’d prefer, but do wish it were a bit simpler/easier to navigate. This wouldn’t be a good app for my elderly parents, for example.

But otherwise, this is a great app and should do for many folks looking for an app to replace Dark Sky. It takes a little while to become accustomed but it’s overall great.

By

Really the Best Weather App

I’ve used a couple of other weather apps in the past and they were just okay. Dark Sky was my favorite but Apple just rolled their algorithm into their not great app. I used this app for the cloud forecast info for astronomy for a bit, but have started to use it for all of the other features - and wow!!

The weekly temperature forecast is great, as well as AQI and sunrise/set. It is so helpful to have all this info in one place. The only supplement I use is NOAA’s forecast info for a broad overview of the weather coming up and alerts/notifications of severe weather. Otherwise this app is all you need.

Beautiful and informative

I love Ventusky. Beautiful design, great weather information. Can’t believe it’s free. Unfortunately, I don’t need the features that would make the upgrade to subscription level worth it - I don’t like paying subscription fees for any app - but I would willingly pay a reasonable purchase price for what is provided here for free. Only improvement I would suggest is being able to fully collapse the daily weather info on the bottom and have the full screen available for the radar/wind graphics.

Visualize the Weather

I prefer weather maps to tables of weather data. I like to see how weather systems and pressure systems are moving over time. this app provides map layers for temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and more. Being able to see the animated wind currents allows me to understand the weather patterns wherever I am.

Plus, seeing the “L” and “H” markers for low- and high-pressure systems is incredibly informative. The animated wind currents flowing into and out of those systems even helped my kids understand what low- and high-pressure systems *are*.

Wanted to like it don’t understand the ratings it’s received so

most advanced weather app? Hardly no street level data just a gray background for the map? It’s a great App for showing all the data there’s no level two radar options in the US no USGS maps satellite maps all I get is a gray background even free apps off or more. Ventusky has a great potential but for what you pay and what you get sorry it just doesn’t make it.

Been using Ventusky for less than three weeks I’ve already had to uninstall and reinstall twice because it failed to open it would give you the initial splash screen and then exit the application still evidently very buggy. Not ready for prime time and definitely not worth the subscription price.

Got Weather

I live on the coast in North Carolina. I have been using the this app app for at least a decade now it has been my experience that the this app app is just as accurate as any of the NOAA weather reports, because this app gets their same reports from the same models that NOAA uses. It is real important, living on the coast to track the storms and be able to prepare, and this app kept me from having my vehicle flooded during October 2018 when the remains of hurricane Michael passed over us and exited land above Virginia Beach. This is one weather app that I trust. For the price it’s really worth it especially if you live in Weather prone area.

Great app - needs better day forecast

This is a great app with tons of information! In general I’m a fan of the interface, map, and sliders.

However, the metrogram is a little small and hard to read on iPhones. It would be nice to have the metrogram more front and center, potentially a setting so that it’s the the first thing you see when opening Ventusky . Also, a zoom function on the metrogram would be welcome to show only 5 or 10 days at a time to make the graphs more legible.

Masterpiece

It sounds weird to call a weather app a masterpiece, but for the genre, it definitely is. this app could drop the mic and walk away, and everyone would get it. Ventusky is an awesome and complete weather app. If you are a weather buff, finding Ventusky is like porking a supermodel, and her more attractive friend, at the same time, while slapping that behind and yelling “who’s your daddy?!” …. Who’s you daddy?! … that’s right I am you’re daddy and don’t you forg ….. uh, hmmm, I digress.

Apologies, I lost myself for a minute. How embarrassing.

Anyway, great app. Thank you so much for writing it.

Simply the best

As years went by, I’ve tried a lot of weather apps to find the one that I like ,leaving this review after a year of using this app. There’s a lot of apps out there that have radar but not like this app I like to view where you can zoom out and see the world see what coming off the coast our way. Having all the layers for wind ,freezing level, radar, Air pressure, to name a few has been helpful In making decisions like pouring concrete decisions in Long Range Shooting, decisions in my every day life. Thank you this app don’t change a thing!! Simply the best out there!!

By

This is the best weather app

Bought Ventusky a year ago due to the UX frustration with Apple Weather (darksky), weather underground, accue weather, etc. it was great then and it just keeps getting better. It now has reasonable wave data in addition to wind and freeze level height.

The User Experience and UI actually work on a small screen, and work exceptionally well. Kudos

Note to the developer - thank you for the pleasant experience! And if you get a chance, adding tide information is my vote for the next layer :-)

Best weather app

There are some things that could be easier when trying to look at general weather for a week or 2. Which is what most apps do. Ventusky on the other hand lets you get down to the exact area and hour and plan accordingly. I have used it to schedule my sports practices. Being able to predict rain or no rain within a mile is fantastic. The wind speed and gusts visualizations are great too.
It could do better at lightening strikes. I have to use a separate app for that. Since practice and games are delayed with strikes in a certain perimeter.

An Des   1 year ago

This app was accurate even when the Hurricane center and FOx news wasn't. There was a divergence between main news and this app and I chose to follow Ventusky instead. Thank God I did.
