offCents Carbon Offset App Reviews

I love environmental preservation, and offCentsCarbonOffsetApp helps the layman put their hand in it all by donating any funds made directly to green causes and incentivizing people to offset their carbon footprint.

However, offCentsCarbonOffsetApp (at the time of writing, June 2019) incorrectly detects bicycle rides as car rides, with no option to change the false detection. The former isn’t a big issue, as many commute trackers can struggle with this (especially with faster cyclists), but the latter seems to be a huge setback.

Without this change, I’ll be disabling location tracking until this is fixed. For the walker, offCentsCarbonOffsetApp is great, but for the regular wheelman, it has no value.

It’s pretty nice to be able to keep track of this, but it would be so much better if you didn’t have to pay so much just to get a few more credits for walking. They are out to get your money and make you think as you upgrade you’re actually doing better. I don’t usually carry my phone when running and walking around- and I don’t have an Apple Watch- so I get so many less credits than I should. It would be so nice if offCentsCarbonOffsetApp would sync with other trackers, such as Fitbit or Garmin. Also, the ads to get 5 lbs, NEVER show up. I have to force close offCentsCarbonOffsetApp sometimes 10 times, and often they still won’t appear and you just have to wait a couple hours.

Love this and the main functions work pretty well. Two biggest issues is that it’s not possible to manually changing mode of transportation without immediately offsetting. Sometimes, I would prefer not to pay right away and rather first review my overall carbon footprint for the trip or series of trips.

Secondly, for manual entering a trip, no way to duplicate a trip or automatically generate a return trip.

Still this is the best app on the market to offset transportation related emissions. Hope they make these two fixes in the next update so it gets even better!

I love the idea that walking + biking will offset automatically calculated travel emissions. For the most part, that is how OffCents functions. However, offCentsCarbonOffsetApp has several bugs—for example, the home screen feature displaying amount of emissions remaining to be offset always shows an incorrect number. On the Trips tab, trips remaining to be offset sometimes show up & sometimes don’t. Clicking the “offset” button sometimes works, sometimes lags, & sometimes crashes offCentsCarbonOffsetApp . These are not essential elements, but they do detract from ease of offCentsCarbonOffsetApp ’s use.

The rewards are also, in my mother’s words, “a bit dinky.” Many are simply coupons you could likely find online. I understand that rewards are far from the main purpose of offCentsCarbonOffsetApp, but if you’re going to offer them, it would be far more enticing to be offered something substantial.

OffCents does a good job in being transparent about the types of offsets retired by the company, but making this a bit more immediately visible & interactive would be nice. Some sort of choice regarding which offset the user retires or more extensive background on the offsets would likely motivate offsetting more than offering coupons does.

offCentsCarbonOffsetApp has a great concept but there are few things that make it fall short.
1. Steps/walking consistently underestimates.
2. The vehicle efficiencies are too high for some vehicles. Our SUV does not get 27mpg on our commutes, it gets 19 (hills, slowdowns, driving style, etc.
3. The price of a ton of carbon is too low to have any meaningful impact. Estimates for the cost of a ton of carbon dioxide emitted to full encapsulate the social costs and pay for the externality are around $80/ton in US. offCentsCarbonOffsetApp works out at a cost of $15/ton.
If offCentsCarbonOffsetApp developers think this is too high there should be an option for users to change the cost per ton, with $15-20/ton as a price floor/minimum.

I like offCentsCarbonOffsetApp for the most part. It’s not super accurate for counting steps. It is only compatible with apple watches so if you have a Fitbit you have to keep your phone in hand or in pocket for all walking you want counted. Bike rides are supposed to be counted but aren’t unless you request that they are converted. I’ve sent in requests for all of my bike rides and never gotten one accepted. Super weird and annoying. Oh well. It’s a good way to be aware of how much energy you’re using. The coins/points are pretty useless

Great concept, but I really wish offCentsCarbonOffsetApp would work better. It's great at picking up my movements, but often times it selects "Random Average Car", even after I've entered my car details. A nice future feature would also be to intelligently label trips that are similar to trips I've taken before (eg. daily commute by train). It doesn't always properly sync bike rides that appear in the Health app, and unfortunately, as of this morning, offCentsCarbonOffsetApp hangs on startup with a spinner

I love offCentsCarbonOffsetApp. The only reason I’m not giving it five stars is because it’s a little clunky. There’s just a lot going on the homepage. I keep clicking the learn more about offsets button when I’m trying to offset because it’s kind of confusing. But other than that offCentsCarbonOffsetApp is great. The customer service is amazing too. They’re very transparent and make it clear they really are helping the environment. When I emailed to ask for clarification on things I didn’t understand they replied super quickly and honestly.

Update: Changed to 5 stares. They recently updated offCentsCarbonOffsetApp (2020) and it’s a lot less clunky.

OffCents has been an amazing way to track my emissions, something that up till now I could only guess at. It keeps me thinking about better ways to move around and holds me to a high standard when I do take a longer trip.

It does drain more battery to be constantly sending location pings but I’ve been impressed at how accurate the journey tracking is, and how it can identify walking or biking versus other modes of transit.

Overall the cost is low to have the confidence that I am fighting climate change with each contribution I make to it.

offCentsCarbonOffsetApp is freaking amazing to the point where it helped lessen my suicidal thoughts about being a burden on the environment. I love offCentsCarbonOffsetApp and think it’s one everyone should have which is why I gave it five stars. I have however come across a problem where my credits are not loading and I’m not sure why or how to fix it. I’m assuming that either it’s just my phone being annoying since it’s old or that the problem will get fixed in the next update.

Hello! I've been using offCents for almost half a year now and it's been great! However, after I updated my phone a few days ago (I'm using an iPhone 11) offCentsCarbonOffsetApp won't open! It just gives me a white screen for a few seconds and crashes without loading anything. I really appreciate being able to be a part of this effort, but I can't do that if I can't open offCentsCarbonOffsetApp . I hope this issue gets resolved soon!

UPDATE 1/25: I reinstalled offCentsCarbonOffsetApp and it's working fine now :)

offCentsCarbonOffsetApp is great for helping you to tangibly understand your daily carbon footprint. I think there are some improvements that could be made to help people to better understand both how the leaf credits work as well as how you can earn those credits through things like walking and hiking.

I also like the addition of diet and utility options but I cannot get them to work so there could be some optimizations there.

I use offCentsCarbonOffsetApp quite a bit, as it turns out. Now that they added offsetting food I find it too useful to ignore. I’ve also managed to get some great stuff from their rewards program, like bamboo toothbrushes. I also like that I can earn additional offsets by getting exercise. The only thing now is that I have such a large surplus of offset credits that I won’t conceivably use them all this decade unless I suddenly start flying over the world.

Started using this to track my carbon footprint from driving and it works so well that I started paying for offsets. The automatic tracking of your trips is great and, If you’re a paying offCents member, it also automatically offsets your travel up to the amount of offsets you purchased. It also lets you know what your offsets are equivalent to, like planting trees or protecting forests. Great app. Excited to see what features they add in the future.

I love how user friendly offCentsCarbonOffsetApp is and how simple and clean the design is. Offsetting carbon has never been so easy! I would have liked a tutorial walkthrough explanation of offCentsCarbonOffsetApp upon downloading however - it took me a minute to figure out what things meant. I recommend offCentsCarbonOffsetApp to everyone!!!!
