Worst AAC app I’ve ever tried.

Some of these reviews must be paid for because this is the most user unfriendly app I’ve ever had. It gives no information on how to use it. Maybe it does if you pay the $13 monthly subscription for premium but it’s mostly just a very limited and confusing text to speech app and not an AAC. When you open it it tells you that you have a 500 word limit and that means every word in a phrase as well. It goes down as you choose words. On the main screen it only lists 27 basic words that have no categories to make it easy to find and put together. You can search for words and more come up but scrolling down it doesn’t scroll down to more words like it looks as if it will. I can’t find a way to log and store phrases. This is a scam app targeted to disabled people for an outrageous amount of money and an unnecessary subscription. I recommend Speech Assistant AAC instead, it costs a lot of money for an app but it’s well organized and not a subscription that you would have to consistently pay in order to help you communicate.

Ableist

I downloaded a few AAC apps to try and this was the best one for me. Except for the fact that it’s free for the first few hundred words and after that it is $13/month. To talk. I should not have to pay a subscription to be able to speak to my partner. A one time fee would be one thing but this is straight up profiting off of peoples’ disabilities. Saddened because I was so relieved by it at first. Now I’m monitoring everything I say on it to not waste words which I’m turn makes me just as anxious to use as I would be trying to speak verbally while mute.

No response

Downloaded Spoken and paid the subscription. Got confirmation from Apple that subscription was active. Our account on the phone is still showing inactive. Emailed support. No answer. Not sure if we will be able to use all the features if our subscription is not active. It’s sad as my husband was excited about this new tool to help him communicate.

Too slow

In theory it’s amazing. It’s the best combination of typing and prediction that I’ve seen in AAC apps. Unfortunately the prediction is remote and is therefore slow. Show enough that it’s frustrating to have a conversation and I’ve been using inferior but faster apps instead. I hope they can improve this.

Requires Literacy

Spoken would be ok for someone who is educated and can read/understand English, but it is not helpful for people who don’t have written English language skills. You need to be able to read in English to successfully use Spoken. Most people who can read, can also speak for themselves. I would only recommend Spoken for a person of average to above average intelligence who is fluent in reading the English language. It is very text heavy and the images are not big enough or drawn in a way that aids understanding.

Would have changed my life!

Too bad it's behind a massive paywall!

This is one of the best apps I have ever used to TTS. It helps a lot when I'm nonverbal. It has great voices, speedy ways to use Spoken , just one problem. I have to pay $13 a month??? Are you kidding me? Maybe one time, sure, but every month? Imagine paying a subscription fee for a cane or a wheelchair. These developers are greedy. Stop putting disability aids behind a huge paywall. This is such a disappointment and the devs should be ashamed.

The quality is decent

I don’t like that they charge because it costs money I cannot afford to spend being on extremely low income, I only get $400 a month and it all goes back into my house. So likely will be very short lived.

Subscription??

Spoken functions great, but why should anyone have to pay a subscription to use an accessibility feature? There are nonverbal people for multitudes of reasons, and to profit off that is asinine. $12 a month for full access to an app that benefits nonverbal people everywhere is atrocious behavior. Just make the features free.

Great app

Very user friendly! Site organization, graphics as well as voices are soothing. Making it easy to set up.

Works really well

Solid design and the different voice choices are great. The fact that is learns from your continued use is amazing.

Useful communication app

I can see this being useful for a lot of people. Interesting interface and good customization options. Snappy interactivity!

Well Done

What a great tool! Easy to use and quickly customizable. Clever voice options make it even better!

Yes

I really like Spoken. I have ADHD but suspecting that I’m autistic too. I sometimes can’t physically bring myself to speak and have shutdowns. Very user friendly

Intuitive App!

Nicely designed, easy to use interface that allows easy interaction as it provides intuitive choices about what you want to say!

Easy and instantly user friendly

This is such a lifesaver for someone in need to communicate after a brain injury or stroke! Spoken is very user friendly and easy to personalize so your loved one can “talk”.

Makes life so much easier

Spoken is amazing. I recently got a tracheostomy and was unable to speak. Spoken completely solved my problem. There are a variety of very nice voices to use. It often has a useful list of words to pick from for auto complete

Feature Suggestions:

The alert isn’t loud enough and can’t get people’s attention. At least that’s been my experience.

It would be so nice if you could reorder your list of sayings!! Please add this!!

Another extremely helpful one is to add groups or collections to your sayings. I’ve got so many in my list now that it can take a while to scroll through and find what I want. And since I can’t adjust the ordering, that makes it slower too, because I could order the list alphabetically or some way to find things faster. Please add this!!!

I absolutely love Spoken which is why I paid for it! I looked at a lot of speech apps and this one was better in every way.

Smart app!

Spoken is super intuitive and will greatly help those with aphasia- it’s almost as if it reads your mind, pointing you to the words needed. It’s also very easy to use! The different voices are incredibly pleasing.

its so cool!

hello! i am a semi-verbal autistic teen. i use this when i go non verbal or dont choose to speak! its very helpful in situations where i cant speak. i love that i can create my own sentences and be able to customize the voice! its also very convenient, i could use it anywhere. im unfortunately undiagnosed but got it confirmed by a physician, so my parents sort of understand my situation when i use this. thank you so much for creating this wonderful app! 🫶🏻

User friendly

I opened Spoken and in a matter of seconds, with what seemed like no prompting, I was using Spoken . The predictor was pretty accurate and when I wanted to change my words, the keyboard option was right there. Great app

I Love this App

I have Been stuttering for a long time and it’s extremely frustrating to sometimes not be able to communicate with family and friends or coworkers Spoken helps me in everyday life thank you I couldn’t be happier with Spoken 11/10

COVID19 Survivor

Spoken is a life saver, on August 3rd i went into the hospital with Covid and was sedated for about 2 months. Mind you I’m 21 and I had severe pneumonia and was only given 20% chance of living i got off the ventilator eventually but in order for me to live they did a tracheotomy on me. I couldn’t speak when i woke up and it hurt so much to see my family and the love of my life and not be able to tell them how much i love them, but Spoken helped me communicate with my family and nurses as well as doctors, i don’t know where i would be without Spoken when i was in the hospital. Today i have recovered 100% with no long term affects and I’m very grateful and now i just have a tracheotomy scar and feeding tube scar but hey it’s better than not being alive. Thank you to every developer of Spoken.
