The data page of a French passport cannot be captured by the ETA app because of unavoidable “glare” produced by the shiny security features embedded in the data page. Spent an hour or more with 2 different iPhone 12 models trying to capture the data page before I gave up.
I eventually found an eVisitor subclass 651 pass with an online form that was simple to complete with approval granted within minutes.
Photo capture does not work, chip scan does not work, just incredible

Camera self photo system is very flawed. Took 126 tries before going through. I am a competent photographer with an iPhone 13. Very aggravating
Scanning passeport chips is not easy!!
It took me several attempts as it is not clear where the chip can be found

in contrary with the previous comment, I've tried the australian ETA with an old iphone XS and a "glassy"french passport and found no problems to go through all the process : just a good internet connexion and some confident in the new ETA app version that probably has solved old bugs problems. Be patient and let make a try : very quick reward with your ETA at the end of a short time effort. Do have a Credit card or Paypal for the fees, fill the postal code for your home address where you receive your bank statements.

From 21 February 2022 all visa holders who are fully vaccinated for international travel purposes can travel to Australia without a travel exemption.
Unvaccinated visa holders will still need a valid travel exemption to enter Australia.
Grant of an ETA through the app does not mean you have been considered for or granted an exemption to travel to Australia.
