Lots of good potential ruined by poor execution

I've postponed this review for over a year, hoping NiC would iron out enough bugs to allow me to give their app more than a single star, but to no avail. The great benefit of reading a chess magazine on an iPad should be the ease of enjoying the games themselves, but this is the glaring shortcoming of the New in Chess app: the game viewer is one of the poorest on the iPad. If you enlarge the board, all the game annotations disappear. It's not for lack of space; half the screen is simply blank. If you wonder what an engine reveals about a position, you'll get no help here, as NiC hasn't deigned to provide one. Even worse, games are often entered incorrectly, so they become impossible to follow in the viewer. (By "often" I do not mean a majority of the games, but I do mean enough games that I'm no longer surprised when I reach one.) The apps for each of the other chess publishers are great. Many of the apps put out by independent programmers are great. New in Chess has really done a shameful job on this one.

The latest update is a huge step backwards

NewInChess is almost useless now. It clearly indicates which issues I own, but there is no way for me to track which issues I’ve read or which issues I was in the middle. I would have to track that information by hand on a sticky note.

Worthless

When app updates you lose all magazines you purchased, I sent and email, and they tell me do I remember the magazine I purchased ? Shouldn’t all my purchased magazines be recorded on my account no it’s not. Even if I do remember they are not on NewInChess . Is this a bank robbery on line ???

All purchases disappeared

Thought this was a great app. Then, after purchasing a bunch of old issues, they all disappeared. It’s a shame, still a great magazine, but can’t recommend buying anything.

Good product, good app

Highly recommended.

Don’t update!!!!!!!!!!!

You will lose all your old issues! Paid or free.

Terrific app

This NIC app, as well as the NIC Books and files app are really first rate and leverages learning with the design that lets you easily walk through games in the magazine or in books. It's also a breeze to play through variations on the screen. The only thing missing - which would make this five stars for me - is a built-in analysis engine or a feature that would let me import stockfish, shredder or Fritz from my iPad to run analysis on moves not covered in the text. Please consider adding this - as an in-app purchase, if necessary.

Better than Print: New in Chess magazine app

The great thing about this New in Chess magazine app is that you can open the games to play through right inside the magazine... you no longer need to have a chess board in front of you to work out the moves in the articles!!! (even though I still like doing that sometimes, this is good when you are on the go and can't pop open a chess board, very convenient)
I would take a half star off for the price of the mag, but it has the type of articles I'm interested in, much better than USCF's Chess Life in my opinion!

Naive and simple

Extremely simple and perhaps naive in that there is potential for a lot more. One can go over game notation and variations with ease. Occasional bugs while signing in, but otherwise solid.

Fantastic

Everything works beautifully in NewInChess: Smooth reliable operation & crisp response. Just tap on any diagram or move, and it shows you the position, AND lets you step through the moves -- backwards or forwards -- from there. I have four other reader apps on my iPad, and they all frustrate me in some way. NewInChess, however, gets its exactly right. bravo!

Great magazine!

I have been subscribing for 3 years now and it is such a fantastic magazine. It is fun, informative, educational, and just all-around the best. Now NewInChess will make it easier to play through the games. I'm so excited about NewInChess and look forward to many more years of this magazine. Top notch!

Convenient and easy to use

NewInChess makes your chess time very productive, fun and you can access it everywhere you go. I have been subscribed for more than ten years to the hard copy magazine but this digital version makes it more convenient

Excellent Looking Magazine

I have been meaning to buy a copy for a while and am not disappointed. Excellent selection of annotated games. I also might add a very well designed magazine.

By

Easy access to the great content of NIC

iPad version is a little more convenient to view, but the iPhone version is great too.

By

Great

Allows you to see games one move at a time. Top level analysis. Information about who's who past and present.

By

Like the old magazine format

Great to be able to read and play through the games without a board.

By

Great Chess content

First time I've checked NIC. Lots of Chess. Great articles, well written. Plus games with interesting analysis. I download the issue and take it with me on trips.

By

Clean format, needs engine

Very easy to navigate NIC magazine and follow games and variations. Needs an integrated engine as in Forward Chess application.
