4.4 out of 5
Very limited

This is an okay app. I upgraded to the pro version so I could add more categories and add more accounts since I have several savings accounts for my sinking funds. EnvelopeBudget is great for someone first starting out budgeting or for the person that maybe just wants to keep track of a few spending areas and use it as an envelopes system. Example name an account groceries and set the account to have your grocery spending limit in it so you can stay on track. However, it is lacking in a lot of areas with no promise of new features. It appears as though the developer doesn’t even respond to emails as I have emailed him prior to purchasing the upgrade and he did not respond. I am now using the free version of Every Dollar and find it is far more advanced and suites my needs than EnvelopeBudget.

OK for manual tracking

Summary:

The pro version is a simple app that allows you to record and track spending with flexibility in setting categories. It needs a few updates to gain 5 stars, but overall does the job if you want something to organize and record spending manually. I’ve found that apps like this work better than ones like Mint, because you’re forced to use their templates for categories.

Pros:
Ability to customize spending categories and subcategories, e.g. Utilities=>Electric
Exports to CSV for analysis

Cons:
No backup. All data will be lost if you get a new device, delete EnvelopeBudget or reset the device. You can export the information to CSV to save your history, but no way of getting it back to your phone, tablet, etc. This could be easily fixed with a feature to sync with iCloud or other cloud-based storage sites, like Box or One Drive.

No way to set monthly budget for each account or category. It just sums up transactions by category or subcategory by month.

No customer support.

Good but not quite there yet

EnvelopeBudget is pretty easy to use. I upgraded to pro, in hopes that there would be a few more features..... not really, other than you can lock EnvelopeBudget with a password (which I like, so it was worth it to me). But to my knowledge, your data for app is not backed up through ICloud, or an account. If you have to reset your phone, or get a new phone, all info is lost :( also when you email your reports to yourself, it will not be separated by account (if you have more than one listed like I do) it all comes as one big file.

So creator, please take my suggestions onto consideration! I’ve emailed support twice with no responses.

Pretty good

EnvelopeBudget is pretty simple to use and serves all basic budgeting needs. You can create multiple "accounts," which I use as if they were envelopes of cash that I'm allowed to spend for each category, but you could also use them to signify actual bank accounts. The process of adding a regular paycheck, bills, and money you've spent or received is all very easy. Only problems I've run into are: 1. No ability to create a recurring paycheck on customized dates TWICE a month (the only semi-monthly option is 1st and 15th) and 2. It is difficult to find how to manually set an account to a certain amount if you've made a mistake or something. Also, there's no way I've found to reset your "unallocated" funds to a specific amount (or to zero). Otherwise, though, it's very nice because you aren't limited to a certain number of accounts or spending categories, and there's no registration required to set it up (as far as I remember). It's a good, basic app for keeping track of a simple budget and spending.

Love the Simplicity, have a few suggestions

I love the simple layout of EnvelopeBudget and the streamlined flow - no clutter! I use it primarily just to keep track of expenses, that’s all, and would like to see it calculate the total just based on month, not by account (I could create a new account for each month, I suppose). But something where I can see that I spent $xx in January 2017, $xx in February 2017 would be great. Thanks!

EDIT: Looks like you can see the monthly breakdown, but for the “big” amount at the bottom it only shows the cumulative total for the account.

Great App!

Due to New Year (2017) resolution on fixing a few financial problems I’m currently having, been using EnvelopeBudget since January 1st and I really really like it so far. Love the simplicity, its minimalistic look and feel and how good it performs. I have tried several similar apps but they’re either too difficult or it does not have the tools I’m looking for.

Only complaint I’m having with EnvelopeBudget is the lack of ability of being able to Sync to iCloud. It is the ONLY reason I’m rating EnvelopeBudget 4 stars!

Please add the ability to “Sync to iCloud” and I will be rating EnvelopeBudget again with 5 STARS!

More features needed

Overall a solid start. EnvelopeBudget does what I want for manually tracking expenses. Saves me a hell of a time coding my own.

I wish I could change the currency symbol. Im in China so it looks like I paid $1,800 USD for rent this month when actually given the currency exchange rate it is more like $270. As well the default colors for the pie chart aren’t my favorite.

No errors for me yet and EnvelopeBudget is fast so I can easily add purchases right after making them. Really good design. Just open EnvelopeBudget and hit the plus button.

Overall, I feel it is just missed some added customization. Money is a very personal matter for many, I think EnvelopeBudget could improve a great deal by adding more personalization.

I would go for the premium version if it had some of these other options for customization, but for now I don’t think the packaged features are worth it. The free version works very well and the premium version doesn’t add anything that I would want.

Also I think the accounts setup is a little funny and out of place. It requires you manually add in your account balances. I could see that as more fitting for a financial tool like Mint, but it seems out of place for EnvelopeBudget. It is an expense tracker, but that aspect makes it seem more like a budget/balance checking tool.

I know a lot of hard work went into making this and it is exactly what I was looking for. I hope you all are continuing to develop and add more features.

Great!

Enjoying EnvelopeBudget , have had it for about 1 1/2 months. It would be nice to have 2 options:
- when accessing the graph to see the breakdown of expenses, to be able to click on the category and see the details for that category.
- be able to share with spouse without having to email report. Have the same option as "any list" app to where we can both update it and get a notification when it has been updated.
This is the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars.

💜 this app

I practically downloaded every free app in order to find the right one that meet my needs. Love EnvelopeBudget.

PROS: I don’t have to attach my bank account. I can have up to five accounts. It’s pleasing (not cluttered) to look at and easy to use. I can leave a note regarding what I purchased and make my own categories and delete the categories I would never use (regarding things pertaining to children or pets). I can add a graphic thumbnail pic of my purchase (if I purchase medicine I can choose the health thumbnail of a cute little bandaid). And most importantly it’s FREE and so much more I have not covered.

CONS: I wish there was a way to change the colors for the expense chart. It’s hard to read “yellow writing” on a white background. I wish there was a way to leave a memo when you make a transfer. I don’t get the color change for the picture thumbnails the color doesn’t show up.

Other then these cons I’m really enjoying EnvelopeBudget . I don’t have a need to go to the Pro version.

Great basic budgeting tool

I am just starting to be more diligent managing my money. I tried a couple of other apps and didn’t like they way they had things set up. EnvelopeBudget is very simple and straightforward. It is quick and easy to use and so I find I am using it and it has helped me with my financial plan. I do wish they had better icons for the types of expenses. The one for kids is a baby bottle and my kids are past that stage. But that is a small thing and does not affect the functionality of EnvelopeBudget . But if they would give us some better icon options I would be very happy. I initially selected EnvelopeBudget because it does not have a lot of extra bells and whistles making things complicated. But now that I am farther into using it and am getting very addicted to tracking my every penny I think I would like a few more extras.

Just what i needed

I haven’t filled out a check register in years, and i had a manual method to track my spending on the family credit card, but i wanted something i could put right in my phone at the time of the purchase. PROS: EnvelopeBudget is basic in a good way, it doesn’t require all the legwork initial set up/ programming and fees and updates of something like Quicken, plus i only wanted to track MY spending on the cc so i knew when i hit my own spending limit goal. This delivers! I’m able to add up expenses in the cc (used by the family) and deduct spending on the debit card (my personal account) and the family checking account (house bills). i like that i can create categories, too!
CONS: a bit too limited, only 3 accounts allowed, only a few repeat monthly expenses allowed without upgrading to a subscription like Quicken, but i made a work around to suit my end goal.
Overall very happy with what EnvelopeBudget does and doesn’t do!

Simple & Effective

I've gotten a lot of use out of this little app. It's easy to learn, has a clean interface, and a basic set of features. I use it daily to keep track of my finances.

Favorite Features:
• Being able to schedule withdrawals/deposits ahead of time
• Expense Chart that breaks down expenses in percentages
• Ability to schedule transfers between accounts
• Custom categories

Features I'd Like:
• The one thing that bothers me about EnvelopeBudget is the way recurring expenses/income are displayed. If you have, say, $500 coming in twice a month, and you schedule it as such, EnvelopeBudget will not display your monthly income as $1000 but instead as $500. This makes it difficult to get an accurate overview of your recurring expenses/income at a glance. Very frustrating. Of course, you could simply set it up as a once a month income of $1000 and it would display correctly, but this would throw off your account balance, messing up some of EnvelopeBudget 's truly useful account management features.

All-in-all, however, it's a wonderful app worthy of five stars. I will be using it for the foreseeable future, and definitely recommend it.

All in one!

EnvelopeBudget is easy to use and co era all aspects of your budgeting world. It allows you to add accounts, add transactions and label transactions by categories. You can track your expenses and build a budget plan.

EnvelopeBudget is customized by the user. This might not be EnvelopeBudget for you if you don't want to add everything in manually. If you're like me, then this won't bother you. I actually prefer an app like this, where I add my transactions in manually and choose their category. This illuminates the issue of having transaction automatically categorized incorrectly, this putting out false figures for tracking where my expenses are going. I think of it as a checking register booklet on my phone and I'm actually excited about it.

I highly recommend.

Simple and flexible-- my favorite!

EnvelopeBudget is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! I used to use a complex spreadsheet and simple expense tracker app, but this does the job of both in a well-designed way. I like a hands-on approach to my finances that isn't dependent on what's cleared the bank or how some other app auto-files my expenses. I love that I can make multiple accounts (I have checking, savings, two credit cards, and a cash account) plus the ability to add and customize expense categories. The recurring expense and incomes feature is amazing, so I'm never surprised by a bill. I like that I can easily transfer amounts between the accounts-- it makes it easy to keep track of where I spent what without having duplicate entries like on other apps. Great, simple, clean app. Thank you! 👏🏻

Exactly what I was looking for

I was looking for an app that would track my expenses and incomes in separate categories. I really wanted separate categories to track cash that I have from my private lessons separately from my main salary and expenses. EnvelopeBudget is able to do exactly what I wanted to in a format that is simple and easy to use. Then I can easily add and take out money from my separate accounts and know how much I have left. As it is the first app that I found that does all these things in one place, in a simple and easy to use way. I like it so much that I updated to pro.

Great app

This is the best expense tracking app in my honest opinion. When I addressed an issue I received a quick response and I no longer have to deal with the problem I had with EnvelopeBudget . I will continue to use EnvelopeBudget over any other and greatly appreciate the response I received from them.

EnvelopeBudget allowed me to see how I was spending my money in a simple and efficient way. Very easy to use and keep up with. The expense chart is a eye opener once you see your monthly spending. I now have better spending habits after comparing the total amount spent each month.

Useful

For those of you who love to be very organized with your finances (which of course, I recommend) EnvelopeBudget is awesome!

I love it because I can keep track of every dollar I spend and what I spend it on. EnvelopeBudget makes it very easy to see the totals and categories.

You can create multiple accounts, title them whatever you want and such.

You can add recurring expenses, income, and transfers so it will automatically record those things for you which is nice.

As for the specifics, you input all expenses and income in EnvelopeBudget which it organizes by date. It’s very simple, and a clean design.

When you click on the account there’s a number on the top left and top right. The left is the money spent, right is income. It resets for each month. There is also a number on the bottom which is the overall total $ in the account (so not just for the month, but overall). If positive the number will be green, if negative then red

You can choose the preset categories or create your own. For example, I have a motorcycle expense category so that I can keep track of how much of my money I am spending on my bike.

You can view your monthly expenses where it shows you a pie chart and the totals for each category as well as the total money spent that month. (Careful, this feature may cause minor episodes of self hatred and anxiety)

Simple, Easy to Use, and Clean!

I've been looking for a spending tracker/budget app for a while. While other apps may have more functions, I found a lot of them had too much on the screen, inconvenient to use, had to provide personal banking info, etc.

I really like EnvelopeBudget, because I don't have to submit banking info and I can do everything manually, which I personally prefer. It's so easy to use and everything is very clean!

I don't normally rate apps, but I thoroughly enjoy EnvelopeBudget and seeing where my money is at!

Simple with great graphics

Uncomplicated and good looking app to track spending. Most of the other apps to track spending were too complicated or ugly. It has categories, good colors and icons, and a great chart to see spending graphically. Using EnvelopeBudget is enjoyable and rather eye opening. I've never tracked my spending before and Wow all of those items add up.

I just use it to track personal spending for me and the family. I wish a little that it could sync with my other apple devices but it's not that big a deal.

I like that EnvelopeBudget does not interface with my banks or credit cards. I got a lot of syncing failures and error messages when I was using Quicken and while it was fun to have things consolidated, it wasn't fun to use. Also I don't like that a 3rd party might have so much access to my data.

Works well and has been stable! Hooray!

Wonderful App

I’m 18 and I’ve been using EnvelopeBudget for about two years now, budgeting is super important to me and EnvelopeBudget is how I keep it on track, you put in nearly everything manually which I love because then no purchase goes without me really looking at it. When I first started working I was really bad with money because I didn’t pay attention to where it went but after getting this I’ve truly learnt how to save and budget way better. It’s perfect for adults or teens starting out with their first job, budgeting and money management are very important life skills and EnvelopeBudget is a perfect way to start them.
