App is garbage

Fluyo does not work as advertised. It is full of translation mistakes and bugs that prevent progress. As someone who tested Fluyo in the Alpha and Beta stages, Fluyo should not have been released in its current state as it feels very much incomplete. Fluyo is not ready for a public release. There are still bugs that existed in the alpha and beta stages of Fluyo . If Fluyo still exists in a couple years, give it a try then but until then don't waste your time trying to make Fluyo work. If you ignore this advice, be prepared to constantly close and reopen Fluyo or uninstall/reinstall Fluyo just to get beyond a beginning tutorial or a boss battle. Theres no excuse for Fluyo to be in its current state.

UI Sluggish, App Feels Cluttered

Sorry, I really support Ikenna but Fluyo needs a lot of work. It is very very slow even on an iphone 15 pro max. On duolingo, which i primarily use everyday for over an hour, everything is so snappy. The UI feels so slow and sluggish and the animations take forever to play out. It feels more like i’m playing a game then learning a language. The font, the way words look and the ability to easily read and follow along with the text, I’m not a fan. On duolingo for instance, all of the text will always appear in the same area but the text here can appear below, above, the words appear stretched out. Still seems like it’s in beta. Would love to see what this will look like in 2 years with continued support and hopefully it will grow into something great.

I agree with “Needs Major Work, Concept Promising”

The free version was only a few short lessons. I do not think this was enough time to truly judge. It seems to move very slowly. So far no speaking practice. Being honest here … are the other reviews with 5 stars possibly from the people who bought shares? I also was waiting for this to come out for the last few years since its concept. If only I could see more free lessons to see if Fluyo gets better as it goes on … I can only base my review on what was free.

Good start but needs a lot of polish

I really like the concept of leveling up a character to learn a language. I took the intro to Japanese and Spanish. I am a native Spanish speaker and a beginner Japanese learner. I noticed that the intros are very different which I like because they give you different experiences. However, I ddi notice that in Spanish they use a robotic voice while in Japanese you hear a narrator. I understand the creator learned Japanese more but I would like both languages to keep the same level of care. I also did notice that Japanese the fighting tutorial but the other one didn’t.

One of the biggest downsides I see is that there isn’t any integration with AI to explain concepts again which would be useful when the lessons mean something. You can message this app but nothing seems to happen. I also noticed there isn’t anyway to practice your speaking which is the most important skill.

There is a huge level of sluggish with this application. I noticed Fluyo lags a bit. The music cuts off sometimes and there more importantly a few infinite loading screens.

I know this application and small and I really like to uncover more. However, you can really tell isn’t as complete as its competitors.

P.S also if there is a better way to contact the developers I would love to help. I currently work in QA for a different mobile app.

Needs major work, promising concept

As a longtime follower of Ikenna, I am extremely disappointed in Fluyo. After all the hype—“five years in the making”—this is a complete letdown. Fluyo takes over a minute to load, the content is shallow and lacks depth, and there aren’t even speaking exercises. It’s buggy, unpolished, and the free version is far more limiting than Duolingo’s. If this is meant to compete with Duolingo, it’s not even close. Ikenna needs to find better developers. Fluyo is a disaster.

Potential is There

I went in for about an hour or two (Studying Japanese) and there are a couple of things that stood out to me that needed immediate attention.

1.) The sound bites for the hiragana characters are broken and are incredibly hard to understand. They feel cut off.

2.) The enemy battles are overtuned? Why am I taking more than half my health in damage if I don’t block? With that too, the length of these battles are incredibly long. Overall, not fun and Fluyo could do without it.

Needs some work.

I’ve been following Fluyo for a while and it has potential but it needs a lot of work. It’s got bugs and I’m pretty sure it’s completely destroying my battery life. Overall I think it will become better unless the project and team end it, but hopefully that doesn’t happen.

Lots of Promise

Yes I’m paying $40/year for premium. That being said, Fluyo has amazing potential and lots of engaging concepts to keep me coming back NOT JUST a streak system. The community and competitive system is built in.

I’ve been learning Spanish for close to 7 years and I decided to try Japanese for the first time on Fluyo just to see what it would be like to learn on this app from scratch. Time flew by and a hour later I was still having fun AND learning.

Fun so far!

I’m loving the delivery of the lessons and the mindless battling thus far! I think for a version 1 of an app, there’s quite a lot here to get going. I can’t wait to see how Fluyo grows as more features are rolled out and optimized. Text contrast and a lack of up-to-date info as you click the book from card to card are just two minor things that I can think of.

Amazing experience thus far! Having a blast!

First of all…

You can really tell that there is a lot of love, attention, and intention poured into Fluyo. No other language learning app (that I know of) has a text-to-speech feature that welcomes you to Fluyo like this app’s intro screen character does. Next, the music is giving very Relaxed-Avatar-The-Last-Airbender vibes. I’m already excited to see what Fluyo has in store for me. (I swear I was not paid to write anything said in this review. Fluyo and its creators just have my long-lasting support)

Needs a lot of work

Been following Fluyo for 5 years, put money into it etc and thoroughly disappointed. The game was unbalanced, impossible to beat the fight no matter how many questions i got right. Also why is the exact same cute dolphin instantly my "enemy"? Even the way the first word was presented in Spanish made no sense. "Quiero" does not meant "want", it is conjugated and means "I want" so the very first lesson would be misleading to new learners. Also it's just your typical "translate this sentence from english" multiple choice but lacks the content depth of Duolingo. This is not how language learning works, shame. In age of LLMs and generative AI I'd expect way more variety and better voices. Lots a lot of love and trust lost after years of following the development of Fluyo I feel bamboozled. I'll still follow Fluyo and change my review if i see it improved but the starting point after 5 years is not very inspiring. Also the nag to purchase yearly subscription after 2 minutes in Fluyo is offputting. Build a good experience first, perhaps. All the positive reviews here strike me as dishonest plugs, so I thought the founder needs to hear the truth about the state of Fluyo.

Now this is what I want in language learning!

I have been studying Korean on and off for 20 years now and finally, this is something that’s breaking down and explaining grammar, giving me a place where I can study vocabulary, have fun playing games, and practice with real people in real time without having to pay an arm and a leg. Fluyo is going to change the way we learn languages and I’m so excited for it.

Absolutely amazing!

I’ve been waiting since the first announcement of this app and can confidently say that it has so far blown any expectations I had through the roof. The graphics are beautiful and the overall language teaching and strategies is brilliant. I’ve used countless language learning apps and so far I feel like this one has given me so much more in just the short amount of time it’s been out.

Beautiful work Ikenna and team!
You all are beautiful and brilliant people🤍✨

Excellent Start!

I’ve been waiting for Fluyo’s full release for a while, and i’m absolutely blown away! I’m studying Chinese, which currently has partial support (flashcards and some games), but which will likely be getting full support in the near future. Fluyo ’s inspired me to start learning some of the languages they have full support for since the gameplay looks so fun! I’m excited to see Fluyo continue to grow and get even better!

To Ikenna and the team

You’ve outdone yourselves. Seriously. Ive been watching Ikenna’s channel since I was in fourth grade. I’ve been using duolingo on and off yet it simply isn’t nearly as effective as this app. SO much thought has gone into Fluyo and I appreciate it all. It feels more motivating and rewarding than any other language learning app thus far, not to mention, it’s fun. I feel like that’s what most other apps lack. They teach you things yes, but it’s hard to retain something when you’re not being motivated by any factors. I’ve been wanting to learn Korean for 6 years now, and though I’ve learned alot of words from K-Drama’s it simply isn’t enough to speak with locals. Im going to use this app for one month and give another update on how far I’ve come along. And again, to Ikenna, this is an amazing app and I’m proud of its success.

Whimsical, Creative, and Practical

I have been playing the Beta. Fluyo is real deal. It brings the strong imaginative aspects of duolingo with better fantasy and story. I love the dolphins; they are so cute. Fluyo has helped me reinforce my study of Spanish in unique ways. The in-game communities, or Pods, allowed me to build relationships with peers who are also learning a language. The quizlet-like vocab decks let me tailor my word review to whatever is my focus. It is amazing. I’m excited and I hope I continue to grow on Fluyo until I’m bilingual.

Finally, a Language App That Works!

Learning languages has always been tricky for me. I’m passionate about it, but honestly, traditional methods just make the process frustrating or boring. Even gamified apps like Duolingo often feel flat because they don’t give those exciting “aha!” moments or real progress.

this app is different! It’s a whole language learning program, and from lesson one, I’m learning grammar I can actually use in real conversations. No endless theory—just immediate, practical language. Plus, the artwork is beautiful, the environment is calming, and I’m not alone either—I have my little dolphin body doubling with me! It’s engaging, fun, and I’m really learning.

actual explanations

ok listen - yes there are some bugs, but overall the actual content of Fluyo is in a really good state. the wayfinder lesson thingys are super helpful bc they explain new grammar points & cultural aspects in a nice simple manner in a way that I havent seen any other app do. the word lessons and battles tie into all that with an SRS system so as for vocab learning its up to par with other apps there, and the games are a nice addon for the journey path.

rest of app could be polished up a lot more for sure, but these lessons alone & how everything ties together has been more than enough reason for me to use Fluyo daily.

has noticeably improved my japanese since playing in the beta a month ago!

Worth ignoring the bugs

Even if this app definitely has some bugs due to it being so freshly launched, the grammar in the Wayfinder lessons and the Pod features alone makes it much more useful than any other language learning app. The Pod feature is so valuable for getting practice writing in the language, and the grammar lessons are very helpful and in depth. Not to mention with the Pods you can be connected with others learning the same language and/or have similar interests to you.

The gamification factor is also very engaging, and Fluyo seems like it would be incredibly accessible for people who have 0 knowledge of the language they’re choosing. Everything is easy to understand and straightforward. So far it’s been worth the five year wait.

FLUYO IS HERE!!!!

I am a long time water of Ikenna and have supported this amazing adventure since its announcement, while it is buggy of course it will be! It’s brand new! So many people flooded to it and so have I! But I’ll tell you one thing, I already know so much more Korean than I have ever learned from any other app! It’s fantastic and I cannot wait to see how it grows !
