4.8 out of 5

One suggestion, otherwise awesome.

2024-09-09

Although its interface isn’t as snazzy as that of OpenVPN’s official app, Passepartout excels where it really counts: functionality. Lots of great features, and works better than the official app. Also, nice name.

One suggestion: Allow the user to edit all aspects of the VPN configuration. Right now, the user must choose from options in a list for some parts of the config. Also allow easier viewing and copying of info about the configuration (sometimes info is cut off with a “...”)

With these minor tweaks, PassepartoutVPNClient deserves six stars.

It is one of the best…

2024-09-20

I went for both the iOS and Mac purchase. I was disappointed to find out it doesn’t allow for SOCKS configuration with WireGuard. Not sure why that has not been implemented. I hope it is soon. I’ll definitely use the ‘Tip’ in-app purchase for it. Additionally, while not a big deal for me personally, the server lists for the providers could really use some updating. While I am on the subject of “wish list” requests, the ability to edit the entire conf. file inside PassepartoutVPNClient would be fantastic rather than having to edit outside and then import and setup a new connection in-app and apply preferences again. I’ve tried A LOT of VPN apps to use with my provider of choice though and PassepartoutVPNClient falls in the top three. Big thanks to the developer for their time and dedication to working on it, especially since I am guessing it is a side-project.

Great!

2024-09-29

I’m a long time user of OpenVPN Connect, but after installing iOS 14, I had the need to look for an alternative. PassepartoutVPNClient is amazing. It does everything the official app does, plus adds capability they said was impossible with iOS. Restart on demand after reboot, keep alive, etc. Having the same app for 3rd party VPN is awesome.

The only issue I have is that NordVPN doesn’t work at all. PIA works great.

Please refresh the add host screen so that adding ovpn files through iTunes shows up. I needed to force close PassepartoutVPNClient to get them to be processed.

Refreshingly thoughtful and well designed app!

2024-09-20

I was kinda anxious about how difficult it would be to setup an openVPN client on my phone. My VPN provider provides their own app with everything set up, but I needed to add a new home VPN I set up myself. Was I going to have to fiddle with endless configuration options? Was I going to have to do a bunch of in-app payments to make it do both? The answers turned out to be nope and nope.

Really dig this developers style: it's clear they’re committed to quality and community engagement. More developers like this please. Well done.

Best OVPN App For iOS. Hands Down.

2024-09-29

I was searching for a way for my Mullvad VPN connection to persist even while my device was locked and came across a post on reddit by the developer of Passepartout mentioning that very feature. I’ve been using PassepartoutVPNClient for over a year now with zero complaints, and it keeps getting better. It functions like native iOS menus and is super user friendly while still maintaining advanced functionality. And now I can log directly into my Mullvad account without having to bother with ovpn config files. Skip OpenVPN and just get this instead. Keep up the great work!

Exactly what I was looking for.

2024-09-29

I was looking for an app that would run open on profiles but have trusted networks disable profile. PassepartoutVPNClient does that. Then I found out I can change the DNS of profiles different from the config file. This I great because it allows me to change my VPN providers DNS to an ad blocking one but still have VON for all other traffic. Thanks. One suggestion. If we could chose which profiles would be used for which networks, that would be great. I would have a profile for cellular different than one for public WiFi. But other than that PassepartoutVPNClient works great.

Better than official wireguard app

2024-09-29

The official wireguard app was having problems connecting every time. Switched to passepartout and the problem resolved instantly. Only gripe I have is I newly installed PassepartoutVPNClient on my iPad, and the configs I had on my iPhone were automatically present on the iPad. Can’t connect both at the same time, as it is the same config. I wonder if I changed the config on iPad would it update to the phone and simple never allow both to connect simultaneously. For now, I just don’t connect both at the same time. I’m guessing it has to do with iCloud.

My #1 Go-To VPN App

2024-09-29

I used to use the OpenVPN app, but haven’t gone back since using Passepartout. Passepartout is incredibly stable, quicker to connect, and easier on battery life. I use it for two main scenarios: for my DNS-only tunnel to a Ras Pi Pi-Hole at home and as a full VPN tunnel with Mullvad. Both scenarios run excellently with Passepartout.

I love how I can choose a specified region with my VPN provider instead of having to load in a bunch of specific OVPN profiles. The dev for PassepartoutVPNClient has been INCREDIBLY responsive, helpful, attentive, and kind. I’ve been beta testing the builds from very early on and I couldn’t be happier with the end product! On top of being a snappy, efficient, feature-packed app, it’s free. If you appreciate PassepartoutVPNClient , make sure to donate or become a patron to support the dev! ❤️

Fantastic OpenVPN alternative.

2024-09-29

Passepartout trims off the fat of OpenVPN's stock iOS client, focusing on being efficient, lightweight, and secure, while still packing in robust configuration settings and useful features. One unique feature of note to me is trusted networks: Passepartout can automatically disconnect you from your VPN upon connecting to trusted network(s) of your choice. For example, your VPN could automatically disconnect anytime you connect to your home network, and automatically reconnect upon disconnecting from it. This is extremely useful for anyone who has a VPN configured on a network level at home, but wants to be protected when on the go without any manual work. Passepartout can achieve this! Not to be cliché here, but overall, it just works. And without any added fluff! I reckon I'll be using Passepartout for a long time to come.

This is what OpenVPN should be

2024-09-29

Some of the instructions are confusing, and was hard for me to find, but worth it. I had been waiting for some way to do a quick push button on for a VPN so I didn’t have to navigate menus and everything. The instructions seemed to indicate that this wasn’t possible. However, as long as you have a Siri shortcut, you can use Shortcuts to put a button on your Home Screen to turn it on. I couldn’t get my NordVPN working, but with a little scripting, I can turn off my home VPN and start Nord without a hassle. I wish more developers would update good apps like this to use new Apple API’s. Keep up the good work. I have pretty much chucked the OpenVPN app. It was hard for me to import my ovpn files, but once I got them in iCloud, I was able to figure it out.

Almost there

2024-09-29

Very good app that allows the connection to latch even if the device is sleeping. Only issue is that VPN throughput is a lot slower than with OpenVPN Connect. I hope the developer fixes this soon.
MY RESPONSE BELOW —>
Response to Developer’s Response: It is slower on both private server and popular providers. I noticed that with Open PN connect, a tun interface is created with a standard MTU of 1500. With Passepartout, it always weirdly picks 1250 and doesn’t even pass any tun-mtu or related values back to the server. Since Passepartout completely ignores tun-mtu and it’s related settings, there is no way to fix the bad throughput on the client end. Fixing it on server end is not an option for a lot of us since it will mess up lots of other clients or we may not be in control of the OpenVPN server. Please can you add the capability to manually change MTU or please pass the mtu values to the server and use standard MTU of 1500? Thanks.

Go From Secure - to - Bulletproof

2024-09-29

Yes. It’s that good. Some many of the best VPNs all utilize an open VPN model, it’s simply more secure. iOS/Apple has always been a system where a complex application/program that require a lot of time to setup and access openVPN servers. If you have an application like VyprVPN, or ProtonVPN, bring your iOS application to its full potential make the chameleon protocol actually work the way it’s supposed to. Take the secure core technology of ProtonVPN to another level. Simple to get started, with all the right features, and none if the weight/fluff.

I imagine I’ll be using this on any iOS device I have, for a really long time. Sometimes I have some connections issues, and wonder if PassepartoutVPNClient utilizes the killswitch features of say VyprVPN. It seems that the worst thing could be a 10 second window w/ a tunnel up.

Still love PassepartoutVPNClient! Great job

Solid VPN app!

2024-09-20

Using a raspberry pi for a VPN/DNS server I was searching for anything that worked better than openvpn connect and found this. Having used it since about a month after it came out I’ve been very pleased and the only feature I wish it had has already been added. Solid app and works great!

- the feature added was the ability to have a password for the VPN profile. I’ve worked in the “cyber” domain for 6 years and love the ease of use. I’ve recommended Passepartout to quite a few people at work.

The Gold Standard

2024-09-20

There’s really no comparison between PassepartoutVPNClient and the official OpenVPN app, or really many individual VPN providers’ apps. This “just works,” and does so reliably. My only suggestion would be to look into including more VPN providers (e.g., ExpressVPN) in the template list. Also, maybe just me, but I’d be more so interested in a subscription-based (yearly) model to always have new features versus the pay-per-feature model.

Works fantastically!!

2024-09-20

UPDATE: PassepartoutVPNClient now allows comp-lzo (see below) and has started integrating VPN providers directly into PassepartoutVPNClient . There is now no need for multiple VPN apps - this one it all - perfectly and quickly. Very impressed with the developer. Totally five stars!!!

It does everything it says it will, quickly and efficiently. Not heavy on battery use. Only current issue is that many VPN providers use “compression framing” (comp-lzo) in their protocol which causes PassepartoutVPNClient to connect but not transfer any data. Until VPN providers change that, they won’t work with PassepartoutVPNClient. I can confirm that Mullvad VPN works great with PassepartoutVPNClient.

New to iPhone...App solved my biggest issue!

2024-09-20

I just moved to an iPhone 12 from nothing but Google pixels and nexus before that...On all these devices I ran open VPN client which would automatically connect to my personal VPN based on Wi-Fi trusted networks. I was considering switching back purely for that function until I found PassepartoutVPNClient.

Within a few minutes I had it up and running and tested multiple times successfully! Works great using OpenVPN!

kinda FIXED: purchases do not register: (fix:iOS 14)

2024-09-20

ORIGINAL ISSUE
I was trying to get PassepartoutVPNClient to add the trusted networks, and it just ate my money...

it kept prompting me to restore my purchase, but it never actually added the functionality...

i tested on iphone and ipad, both fail to add the functionality of the purchase

update- ios14 fixed the issue (i actually found that suggestion from the developers response to another review)... confirmed working

This is a great app with the added functionality

UPDATE
i had my friend buy the software and update to iOS 14... he is unable to get the functionality of his purchases. it's a great software if it works for you... i give it a 5 star if working, 1 star if it doesn't, and there is no rhyme no reason as to how to make it work.

UPDATE UPDATE
My friend in 2-3 days time had it randomly work... so behold knows why... back up to 5 Stars... just if you buy this, it might take a week to start working

This app offers everything the official OpenVPN app doesn’t

2024-09-20

I host my own vpn server at home. PassepartoutVPNClient allows me to keep the vpn connection always on for any network I connect to but automatically disconnects when I connect to my trusted home network and reconnects when I leave home. The fact that I can just set it and forget it is amazing and it’s very weird that this isn’t built into the official OpenVPN app. Please consider buying this application as there is quite literally no alternative and PassepartoutVPNClient should be considered just as viable if not it more viable then the official OpenVPN app.

Excellent!

2024-09-20

Between work and personal setups I was using OpenVPN, TunnelBlick, and a custom app from my VPN provider (I think it was an electron app 🤮). I was looking for a WireShark client for iOS and stumbled accross this. When I saw the capabilities I instantly paid the in app purchase for both iOS and macOS. Now I can seemlessly switch between work and personal VPNs in a single app. If you have to manage multiple VPNs I can't recommend this enough!

Happy but not happy...

2024-09-20

Update: It works now. I’s been “stuck” on LA for a while (I still don’t understand what was wrong), but now I’m back in NY.
Thanks for the answer, I’ll contact you if needed.

Orig: Safe open VPN...was happy with it!
The problem is, it always connects to Los Angeles servers. I opted for Eastern US configuration, but the “automatic” Endpoint within PassepartoutVPNClient always connects me to LA. If I chose the “manual” Endpoint and link it to my VPN provider’s US Eastern configuration, it fails to connect (it keeps trying but it never succeeds). I’m thinking to delete it.
