Actually horrible

I wish I could change other people’s decks. like maybe let us personalize a deck? most decks that are made by others have spelling mistakes or incorrect information and it would be easier to be able to fix them than to just make a whole new deck. also, I don’t like the “do you remember this card” questions. I’d rather you just quiz me on the card and see if I get it wrong or not. when you allow me to see both sides of the card, how am I supposed to know if I remember it?
Also, I hate how you HAVE to do each “section” at a time before moving onto the next one. I wish I could just make a deck or learn a deck by seeing all of the cards at once like how I’m able to once I’ve done every section.
ALSO if you don’t say what language the card is in auto correct won’t work. So I have to say front of card is English’s and back of card is in English. But then if you chose a language, it will READ YOU THE CARD WHEN YOURE LEARNING IT. There’s no way to turn off audio besides just putting the volume down on my phone. So I have change everything to English, then when I’m done typing out the cards I have to change it to “none”. So annoying ????

Update: I just changed whether you get quizzes on the back or front for one of my sets and everything reset. Each section got locked again. Complete garbage app

Poor Clarity

Tinycards intrigued me at first, as a longtime Duolingo user. Generally speaking, it COULD be a good app, but there are a few key issues.

The biggest problem is constantly getting words wrong that have double meanings, because Tinycards doesn’t indicate in any fashion which meaning they’re looking for. Example: I’m learning Italian. Tinycards asks me to write “you drink”. I write “Tu bevi,” which is an accurate option. Tinycards tells me I got this incorrect and that the correct answer is “Voi bevete.” Now, that is of course ALSO correct; but without Tinycards indicating what it is looking for (perhaps “you drink (plural)”), one is left to take a stab in the dark and hope for the best - not a very efficient way to learn a language, if you ask me. Duolingo itself manages to get this right; “another correct solution” often pops up after you have answered a question with ONE of the correct answers (in cases where multiple answers are correct).

Additionally, as has been mentioned here, your lesson completion is constantly degrading, very quickly. It is at the point where one would need to do every single previous lesson every single day in order to maintain “progress”.

Generally good but needs improvement

2024-12-16

Having an flash card app that works alongside Duolingo is great. It’s very useful except for two major issues:

1) The completion level for each set of cards degrades WAY too fast, much faster than Duolingo. This is problematic for me because I’m way ahead in Duolingo and it’s made it very hard to catch up with this app. Each lesson degrades in completion every single day, and so the further along you get, the more you need to do to keep it current, and the harder it is to move forward. I could just move on anyway, but as a completion freak I just need to get it all done every day. It’s extremely frustrating.

2) Some words have multiple meanings or translations. However, it will only accept one as the correct answer, not the other, and gives no indication as to which one it wants. Ultimately, because I have to redo every card set as outlined in point 1, you come to figure out which it wants from the wording of the question, but it’s still frustrating to get something wrong when it’s actually still correct.

Not for beginners

2024-12-16

I got Tinycards to correlate my lessons with Duolingo. I opened Tinycards and started my first basics lesson. I was overwhelmed! It went on to show me a few cards with words connected to phrases/pictures but then it would ask me to type out words with like 8 letters in them. I didn’t mind that but when I misplaced letters and went to look at the spelling errors I made and connect it to the correct answer the card would swipe away and it would start with the next question before I could even look at what I just wrote. I feel like if you are far in your Duolingo lessons this might be a good app but I deleted it after a few wrong answers with no explanation because I knew it would be of no help to me. Also, if you could include a turtle version of the sound that would be nice as that helps me connect the letters in the word to the sound. Hopefully I will be able to use Tinycards in the future because flash cards are proven to improve the memory significantly.

Wrong words....

2024-12-16

I am using Tinycards to compliment the duolingo app and learning Italian. I agree with the other (Italian language) users that the cards do not indicate if you are looking for plural or singular so you get them wrong when you could have gotten them correct if the card indicated which form they were asking for. Also there are inconsistencies with with duolingo such as the use of "dish" and "plate". Tiny cards uses the term "dish" and duolingo used the term "plate". Unless you keep the two straight as to which term to use for whatever app you happen to be on, you get them wrong. Also tiny cards had incorrect words such as "grill". You have it as "grid" so I have to call a grill a grid in order to get it right . The good part is, it's a good way to just practice the vocabulary before doing duolingo.... Provided the vocabulary is correct that is.

Great product with fixable flaws

2024-12-16

This is great app, probably even better than its sister app Duolingo. However, there are a couple of flaws:

* The biggest one is that, on missing a card, it is whisked away before I can even compare my wrong answer to the correct one. It should stay on screen until swiped away. This needs to be fixed.

* For language review, a better presentation of the initial card would be to have me type it in from a display of the answer. That is, the card would say “good: хорошо” and make me type in “хорошо” even on the first try. For any complicated phrase, the current mode has me see it, flunk it, type it in from the prompt which disappears as I type, and then asks me once more.

* The second introduction of a card is also too easy. Tinycards might show “там” and “собака” and then immediately make me choose between them which is “dog”. Better to show “совака”, “собаку”, “собака” than the trivial memory test from two seconds ago. These cards seem more useful for later review than for immediate introduction.

* When editing a deck, display the front and back together and allow immediate editing of both. Perhaps an edit mode where the front and back of each card sit joined together on left and right, with pairs of cards scrolling horizontally as present. The current interface is too cute; a clumsy spreadsheet would be better than the current implementation.

Love it, but looking for a few more features

2024-12-16

I see a lot of reviews that are actually about the content, not Tinycards itself. I think people are confused with what the purpose of Tinycards is, which is like making paper flash cards, except that I always have them with me. People who have trouble with the content need to realize the it is only as good as the content creator, and that is something they can do themselves.

I’ve been using this app for months to help me study materials from in person Japanese lessons. I’ve built 45 decks (and counting)! There are several features that would be really useful to someone who creates (and shares) content: 1) more native language support (in my case Japanese), 2) ability to organize the decks (it would be great to be able to drag and drop my decks the way I can drag and drop a card within a deck), 3) ability to move cards between decks, 4) maybe have folders to organize decks into.

Fantastic for Classrooms, only one improvement

2024-12-16

Tinycards is one of my all time favorites to use in the classroom, not just for personal use. My students love the quiz options, and respond excellently when learning vocabulary words and their meanings. I think the typing option is genius, as is the fact that you can choose both sides of the card. Tinycards is much more versatile than traditional flash cards, and much friendlier to one-on-one instruction than Kahoot.

I would absolutely LOVE to see a feature where you can reset decks to their original state of learning a new card so I can use the same deck multiple times with different students, instead of needing to recreate the deck in order to start new with a student. I would also like to see a feature where you can duplicate a deck without needing to re-create every card so I can manage each student and their progress.

Great companion to Duolingo

2024-12-16

Overall I think this is a great app. It works especially well with Duolingo as it has flash card sets that correspond to the lessons. I also like that it is very easy to make your own flash card sets. There are a few things that I feel would improve this app. It would be nice to have an option to be quizzed on both sides of the cards but not on the additional “fact” separately. I have made some cards with a Spanish phrase on the front and the English translation on the back. I like to add a picture to the back to better remember. Unfortunately I end up being quizzed on the English phrase that corresponds to the picture. I also agree with the previous reviewer that the time frame that Tinycards wants you to revisit the cards is very short. I also feel it would better to match the Duolingo app.

It has some frustrating glitches....

2024-12-16

Tinycards is really nice, I use it for studying and it has helped me a ton. You can find pretty much any kind of deck you need, whether it be vocabulary words, dog breeds, or Lord of the Rings characters— I’m sure someone has made it. If they don’t have what you need, you can make a deck of your own (which is super fun btw). It’s also nice that this app works alongside Duolingo to help people learn different languages.

HOWEVER, I have a two problems:

1.) I have noticed that when looking to see if the people I follow have added any new decks (on their profile page), it shows nothing new. But, when I look through the ‘People you follow’ section (on the deck search page), it shows their new decks they have added. I have emailed Duolingo’s support team about this and they haven’t answered me.

2.) When scrolling through people’s followers and who they follow, some profiles show up more than once.

I would give Tinycards 5 stars if it didn’t have these glitches...
Overall though, Tinycards is very helpful and there is a great community of deck makers on this app.

As A THREE TIME LOSER.....

2024-12-16

....to traditional Spanish classes, at 66, I am delighted to discover I CAN learn Spanish! I can repeat lessons I think/know I need to repeat....and then move on when I am comfortable with my use/knowledge. It’s a bit tougher for me after having a small stroke. The words I try to spell, get mixed up, even though I KNOW the word I want...I am having trouble spelling in Spanish. But I am delighted WITH my progress!
TINY CARDS present a whole line of languages to learn! I am amazed to discover that there are other subjects presented like Medical Terminology, Basic Science Equations
, and even letters and numbers for the kids! To see ALL of TINY CARDS offerings be sure to set up an account. It is entirely free (which amazes and delights me...) and you will be able to add for your own use flash cards...of any subject offered. Roman numerals, anyone? It’s here! It’s up to you to use it....it’s fun and a great way to learn at your own pace...😀. 💯%
Oh, I forgot....when I feel competent, there are pod recordings in Spanish that I can listen to. (I did not check every language offered)It’s another perk.

Excellent App! Just a few suggestions...

2024-12-16

I love this app! I use it all the time, and I loving being able to share my learning resources that I have made on Tinycards with my friends, electronically. However, no app is perfect, although Tinycards is one of my favorites, so I have a few suggestions. Firstly, folders! I want to be able to organize all of my decks of flash cards into folders, since after you make many, it can make your profile look messy. Secondly, recordings. I want to be able to study for speaking exams in French, so it would be very helpful to be able to upload pre-recorded recordings. Finally, groups. My friends and I all share flash cards that we all make. I would like for us to have a group, and whoever is in that group, receives a notification when they upload flash cards. Thank you for reading this, and more importantly, thank you for this terrific platform for learning new things!

Yo

2024-12-16

I don’t know why there are so many negative reviews on Tinycards, but I think it might be because people were expecting something just like Duolingo, with all of the carefulness that went into making it such a high quality product. I think it’s unfair for people to judge this app based on Duolingo. Duolingo has had a lot of resources put into it so that it’s a high quality app that can affectively teach (at least the basics of) a language.

this app is not Duolingo. this app is a study tool to compliment Duolingo, but that can also help you learn other things. It’s basically Quizlet, only nicer if you ask me.

this app are literally just online flash cards that are a good alternative to making your own. Tinycards acts a deck of flashcards only free, with no trees cut down to make them, and arguably it takes a lot less time to make a nice product on this app than to write stuff neatly onto paper.

Amazing! Informative! Insane! I ❤️ google

2024-12-16

Now, most of the language apps, require you to do a subscription! Which is so stupid! Now on duolingo and tiny cards, its free!!! Yes, I said it FREE! I adore google for this, which has helped me and school and even in writing. Tinycards , if you're like me, doesn't just say fail, it'll help you through it when you don't get it! Now, there are the occasional adds, yet still good! Take it from me! I DESPISE adds with every bone in my body, they ruin games and make them annoying! But here, at least they tell you why! They say it's to keep learning free, which, heck, keep the adds coming if j get this good of an app! I seriously recommend Tinycards to anyone who loves to learn languages and new things through helpful flashcards. Google... ROCKS, for making Tinycards!

Great flash cards

2024-12-16

This is a great tool but like all tools for language learning is best when combined with others. Using the duolingo decks is better than duolingo itself for drilling material but not as good for initially learning it (as should be expected of flash cards).

The flash card functionality, independent of the content (flipping cards, swiping away, the repetition, etc...), is very good and better than any other flash card app I have tried.

One has to be careful of other users’ custom decks though as those do tend to contain errors. There is not much that can be done about that though besides having everything reviewed by an expert and it may not always be clear what the deck is for much less how it should be reviewed.
