Well, where do I start. I’ve been into homefitness for over a decade now. Started with books and later DVDs. Graduated P90X and Insanity and have seen and tried a lot of apps and platforms related to fitness.
Ladder isn’t like anything I’ve seen before. Not only does it offer a considerable library of workouts and workout styles. It also gives you a clear plan to follow along once you engage in on of the plans (they are called Teams). There’s a dedicated coach to a team who designs 7 workouts a week each week. Split up into different phases (e.g. build/bulk/deload/shred) and following a progressive overload approach. And not only do you get the fresh workouts each day/week, you also have a great community feature (chatgroup) in app where the coach is available on a daily basis (and I guess it’s a real coach and not a bot).
But the coolest thing (and also something I think will improve over time even more) is the technical aspect of the app and the integration of the app into the Apple ecosystem: iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods blend perfectly into the app experience.
Not only does the app tell you what to do and count/time you, show you demo clips of the movements..it also allows you to track your progress in app. Which means you can enter weights used and reps achieved. Being connected to Apple Watch you’ll have your hr and calories measured but also haptic feedback for starting and stopping your sets. If you use your headphones you can hear the coach talk you through the exercise and give you valuable clues and information. The overall experience is just AMAZING!
If I could wish for something I’d like to have a native iPad app (not a fit so size iPhone app on iPad) which makes use of the larger screen. Clever would be to offer split screen so that logging your reps and weights is parallel to the preview window (it’s a bit tricky on the iPhone) making use of left and right side.
What I could also think of would be hybrids of the teams. I’ve hopped 3 teams till I found the right one. And I‘d somehow love to build my 7 day plan with a Offday or yoga or another type of exercise that’s not offered on the current team.
But that’s just a suggestion and not a show stopper for me. Just upgraded my sub to the annual plan. Great work!!!
