O Reilly Erfahrungen und Bewertung

Update: still takes 35+ seconds to get to read the first page of a book with a fast internet connection. I used to check and jump back and forth to 100s of books. Takes 35s*100 = ~One hour loading time alone for what just to be an hour of productivity. No idea how a product manager can miss that. Cancelled subscription.

App tries to download every book, takes forever. Safari Books / O'Reilly on steady decline - deleted all my bookmarks in 2016, made the app unusable 2017. Whats next? Brick my iPad? Started buying real books again (no O'Reilly brands of course).

The app is basically unusable for me. My University has access via library but the SSO sign in isn’t functioning on iPadOS at all. When attempting to sign in with my library account, the web view window opens and prompts to sign in with my Uni‘s account which successfully happens but then it’s just the website opened in the login web view, the token is not propagated back to the app at all.

Gehe ich auf Safari Books Online, bekomme ich OReilly empfohlen. Versuche ich mich dort einzuloggen wird mir aber gesagt dass mein Account nicht unterstützt wird, weil es ein “Klassik” Account ist. Infos findet man nicht.

Habe OReilly schon seit Jahren benutzt. Es ist mir unverständlich warum sie jetzt nicht mehr funktioniert.

Die Performance der Übersichtsseite und Listenansichten ist katastrophal.
Anstatt für das Laden der Inhalte und Bilder den Main-Thread zu blockieren und somit währenddessen die Bedienung unmöglich zu machen, muss dies asynchron mit einem Hintergrund-Thread geschehen!

Ich habe einen funktionierenden Account, aber das Login über OReilly (iOS) geht leider nicht!

Kann mich erfolgreich per SSO einloggen, allerdings wechselt OReilly dann nicht zurück in den App Kontext aus dem Mini Fenster sondern ich habe einfach die Web Ansicht von diese App bei einem erfolgreichen log in :D

Unusable.

iOS 13.4.2 introduced the (since then much extended) spyware called Exposure Notification API which in later versions enables governments to query your location, contacts, and whom you met when. This possibly life-threatening change causes many tech oriented folks to not go beyond 13.4.1.

It's a pity, O'Reilly doesn't respect this well-known strategy by mandating at least iOS 14 and, thus, opens the doors for widespreading suppressive governments in the entire world.

Fortunately, the old version still works as of Nov 2021.

The vast number of books, videos and events makes the content of O’Reilly subscription the best subscription service I’ve ever subscribed to. It’s pricey but covers book from my favorite publishers

However the App is the worst E-Reader app in the App Store. I’m sure the issues are not unknown to O’Reilly. I wish the give some prio to the App.

Man hat die super sinnvolle Möglichkeit Bücher und Videos runterzuladen, um sie zum Beispiel im Zug zu lesen / gucken. Jedoch wird das ganze Erlebnis durch einen Login Screen blockiert. Es wäre schön, wenn das Produkt Management sich mal mehr Gedanken über die User Experience macht.

I love the content available but the app ist just awful. Maybe the team working on the app should read some of the content they are offering? ;)

My biggest issue at the moment is that the app doesn’t sync properly between my iPad, iPhone and the webpage, especially when I’m watching a video series. It simply doesn’t remember which videos I have seen and which I haven’t, which makes it very annoying to switch between the devices.

Instead of adding more and more features to the app, I would love to see the ones existing work properly first.

Without doubt the books are top notch but the app is lacking some essential features like bookmarks. When navigating to foot notes, going back to the previous position is hard. The reading progress in the overview isn’t updated even f you reload the app multiple times.

I love O’Reilly so many books and courses just great content. I only wish the app would Renner the last place I had on my screen / I read to. It always jumps back to places I had long read.

I have subscribed to Safari Books Online for years now and consider the books worth my money. But the app was never great and most new ‘features’ are of no interest to me.

Navigating inside the book (end notes/bibliography) does not work well, especially when there are multiple occurrences of a reference to the same bibliography entry.

There is no unified search bar. When reading a book, I have to switch to a ‘search mode’ to find other books.

When switching from portrait to landscape the current reading location often jumps far away, and when coming back to a book the reading position is often not where I left.

The end of a chapter is not recognizable, so if you just want to scroll some more lines, you accidentally jump to the next chapter, and then have to jump back to read the last missing lines.

And there are a multitude of smaller issues, that Kindle and iBooks solve much better.

Wie kann das sein, dass ich mich alle paar Wochen neu einloggen muss? Ihr habt tausende Bücher für gut gemachte IT, könnt es aber selber nicht...

I enjoy reading my books offline in this app.

Great app and content, however since a few weeks a synchronization between devices is not working anymore. When I read my book on my iPhone and switch to iPad, I did not get any pop-up window, which would offer me to skip to the page, where I finished on my another device. I remember, it worked in the past.
Moreover are you planning to add an App for Apple TV?

First time ever I change a comment for an app, but the overall star ranking needed to be revised downwards !

Having access to the very valuable content is a plus - but doing this with an app that is getting ever worse (...not working at all right now as of Nov. 2018), not better, is a slap in the consumer face.

I pay a considerable amount of annual subscription.... just to find me searching on the internet if I cannot „illegally“ download the content I am entitled to as PDF to have it in this format in the first place and to be able to annotate it in a way that is worthy of the 21st century.

A disgrace for a company the propagates the internet of the future.

O‘Reilly dropped PDF support for Safarionline. PDF is a must-have both in terms of productivty (aka handwritten annotations) and portability.
That looses the app 2 out of 5 stars.

Bin mit OReilly sehr zufrieden. Läuft stabil, die Videos werden zuverlässig angespielt. Leider kann in OReilly nicht nach deutschen Büchern gesucht werden, das geht nur über das Web.
