Jill Nelson at Talkspace saved my life

It sounds crazy, I know, but my therapist and the app saved my life. I was able to preserve some anonymity about issues I skirted in many a therapist’s office. Sometimes due to anxiety and stress around going to a therapist office, I would continually reschedule and ultimately never go. I’ve also paid some hefty penalties for forgetting or missing appointments. I know my story isn’t unique. It enabled my husband who also has anxiety to seek help, which I believe saved his life, also. Both of us express ourselves far better in writing than speaking. Please don’t let the idea of therapy impede your recovery. If you don’t feel comfortable revealing who you are like I did, you don’t have to use video chat or photos, but of course that is an option if you choose to use it. My only issue is that there seems to be a deficit of therapists who are also people of color, and additionally men. My husband is happy with his therapist, but I know he felt badly that he couldn’t seek someone out as a therapist who understands what it is like to be routinely discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Maybe Talkspace as a company could be more proactive in seeking more diversity in hiring.

The best therapy for therapy skeptics

For the past few years I’ve had a lot of the usual stressors going on in my life and it finally began to feel like I wasn’t keeping up. I have a good amount of friends, including my partner, tell me how beneficial therapy has been for them even on the simplest level of having “someone to talk to about yourself” who is unbiased and unrelated to your day to day life. I finally took the plunge to try Talkspace despite having a very thin budget (read:nearly nonexistent) and I’m so happy I finally got over the skepticism and concern that maybe it wouldn’t help me. I love knowing I can message my therapist at any time and she’s there to hear my worries and dismantle my fears. This platform is a game changer- it’s made therapy affordable (you pay for one month what some therapists charge an hour) and I promise if you’re open to working towards change you will find it, especially because you don’t have to drive to an office to talk to someone, you can do it comfy in your pjs at home!

Best investment I made in myself in 2017!

I made the decision to try out Talk Space last year around this time when I had some personal goals I knew I wanted to achieve but was getting anxious thinking about where to start or what steps to take. My therapist has been so helpful in giving me an outlet to regularly reflect and think deeply about who I am and how I approach my life and relationships. I love the fact that I can have days/weeks where I message her every day or even multiple times a day or other weeks when I can put it aside and focus on other parts of my life and return later. My schedule right now is so erratic there’s no way I could keep up with a regular in person therapy appointment and there is something another typing that allows me to be more open and vulnerable than I would with a person sitting in front of me. Hands down, joking Talk Space was the best investment I made in myself in 2017. It may not be right for everyone but it’s had a positive impact on me!
