Piano Companion: Chords,Scales Reviews

Within the time that I have discovered this application to now i can already tell how valuable of a resource this is going to be, especially taking university level music classes. Any struggling student just take the time to look for other resources to develop the necessary skills and with so much information to learn it can be an extremely daunting task. However Piano Companion has all that information and more within the basic version alone, including a virtual piano, Chord Progression generator, and even a Chord Dictionary!

The only suggestion I have is redesigning the presentation of the info, particularly in the Chord Dictionary section where it has lots of helpful things like piano diagram of the chords along with quality and an audio snippet of said chord when tapped on, however there is an overwhelming amount of information all at once when taking into account the diatonic chords, 9th, 13th chord, etc. When i opened PianoCompanion initially i was immediately intimidated by it but after really looking through it i was able to decipher what i needed vs what was there because it simply exists. Cutting out the fluff with help streamline the use of PianoCompanion and the user will have a much more straightforward experience, no explanation or intimidation (ideally).

Still overall I believe this application will give me the boost i need in my classes and really improve/expand my knowledge as a musician. 10/10 would recommend.

PianoCompanion has been a great help for me as I learn the piano - both as I learn existing songs and as I compose my own. I’ve tried all the other apps (including the prettier ones) but Piano Companion is head and shoulders above imo.

The chord progression builder is perfect. I love that you can add chord inversions, but equally impressive is that PianoCompanion automatically applies chord inversions when it makes sense for the progression (from a voice leading perspective). This was completely unexpected and is an amazing feature.

Some of the other apps don’t support inversions at all which is strange since even as a beginner it seems like a foundation of playing songs to accompany singers, etc.

I wish PianoCompanion was under active development . There’s a few features I’d like but overall this is my go-to composition and learning tool for chords and scales.

Give it a try, and you will see why I recommend buying the full app. It is a purchase that pays for itself many times over.

Great app in theory, but very confusing and many many pages to get lost in while just trying to get a couple chords noted down.

Takes some getting used to

I use PianoCompanion when I can’t remember how to play a chord on my keyboard. It’s great!

This is a must-have tool for music students and teachers.

You can not play a song that involves the end of the piano and middle keys at the same times but you can record tour song or ya but eser way a real piano is better

I would love it if you could add a sample for each scale. It would make this perfect.

I use PianoCompanion most when I am about to set up a score of music. The shear amount of information in this free app is incredible. I used PianoCompanion on multiple occasions to figure out what key a score was written in and what type of scales were used in runs. Let me provide an example, from the movie The Terminal, the main soundtrack is written in a D minor key, and towards the end of the song the lead clarinet plays a D genus diatonicum veterum correctum (yes this is a real thing) scale pattern.

Application is very helpful

When I try to change the key to basic G major to look for scales it directs me back to C for some reason whether it’s by accident or on purpose. PianoCompanion is broken

crashes all the time. ios updates too often. going back to windows.

Super comprehensive and logical layout. I use it for my song writing every day when I need to look something up. My friend uses it to learn theory. Pretty nifty little tool that packs in a bunch of features although a phone screen is such a small space to view all of the information on.

I bought the Pro upgrade thinking I could easily chart out songs. Every time I try to put in the notes I need, it gives me pages of alternative chords and won't just takes the notes that I know are correct. I get it that this is a benefit for some, but when you need a simple way to get a song charted verbatim, this is useless.

I don't need theory or inversions, I need to chart chords. I wasted $5. I don't care about the money as much as the need for a tool to get work done. I have a pile of songs to learn and I don't read staff or know piano. I just know what I hear and can play it. I just need to chart it and move on...

Any apps out there that can do this?

PianoCompanion is very good and helpful. It gives you all the chords you could possibly play and even gives you a piano to play on. Even a reverse look up and many other helpful things. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for PianoCompanion.

Very cool, awesome to compile chords when on the go without an instrument. But am I missing something? Every time I hit a chord in the dictionary, it takes me to a details screen. Makes it annoying to go back and forth when you're comparing chords. Does the pay version allow you to stay on the main dictionary screen and strike chords in sequence without taking you to the details?

I was really hoping this would be the piano app I was looking for. I create my own chords and I need a mind I file when I'm done. Imagine my surprise when I found they didn't even have a major 7 chord in their dictionary. I tried to add one, it shows it's there, but it's not available in progressions. Then there was no midi export as they stated, well the button doesn't work.

I don't mind paying top dollar for a good app, if it works. This One's not there yet.

If you been playing for awhile and still are trying to understand the basic and the history of it I would recommend this

I download PianoCompanion so I could try out different chord progression on the go. Even without purchasing anything, PianoCompanion has been an excellent, convenient, and helpful.

I love PianoCompanion I'm getting back to singing again after being out for a long time this helps me run though my vocal exercise thank you APP

I like PianoCompanion ! It is a great reference guide. It has every scale known to man and possibly some aliens. It can be a bit clumsy to navigate through, but there is so much in PianoCompanion I'm not sure how that would be improved. Take the time and learn it. Enjoy!

If your are learning to play piano, get PianoCompanion. Pay the extra two bucks for the full version. It has helped me so much so quickly. Learning chords, scales, etc. cheaper than a year of lessons lol

I've been playing piano for 10+ years and PianoCompanion is incredible. Major props to the creators of PianoCompanion. Extremely impressed and a must-get for any pianist. Good for all levels and ages.

Wonderful app for composing! I do wish there was a way to record the chords you compose, rather than send as a midi file, a sound file would be more accessible. Other than that, it’s perfect!

There is a wealth of information at my fingertips. You certainly can find this info elsewhere but now I have my iPad next to my keyboard with quick access.

As a new hobby, this information learned was 100% better than all I expected to learn. As a result my playing has greatly improving everyday. It has been well worth my time. Thanks, LT

PianoCompanion is great! It makes learning chords very straightforward. It's organized in a very rational way that helps you understand the chord. It makes it easy to visualize and retain the information. Loving it!

PianoCompanion has greatly supplemented my learning of the piano over the last several weeks. I save so much time not having to search for shapes of chords or scales.

I'm very picky about the apps I use regarding teaching music but PianoCompanion is without a doubt the best I have ever seen. It is worth well more than the $6.99 I paid for the full version. Get PianoCompanion!
