Will be even better once some issues are addressed.

I've been using Benkyo Pro (including the additional content) for a few months. I'm very glad that the developer is continuing to work on LearnJapanese . That's a big plus. I use LearnJapanese for the FlexSRS flashcard system. Once I put the things I want to study into it, I really like how it works. It's very smart. Unfortunately, it's being held back by some major issues. LearnJapanese is organized in a way I'm not familiar with (decks, JLPT, lessons, grades, etc), and it's difficult to use as a normal person who just wants to do flashcards. LearnJapanese needs ONE unified vocabulary list with ONE entry per term that works with FlexSRS. Common phrase "sumimasen" has four entries across two vocab lists, and two of those only have half the definition. There also needs to be a list of the cards that are in the FlexSRS deck where I can remove individual cards from the deck. As it is now, I have to do it by memory. There problems are ridiculous and difficult to deal with, but hopefully they'll be fixed in a future update. The widget update was very useful. I'm pretty unhappy with the update that makes visually distracting changes to the writing flashcards, like telling what to draw right where I'm trying to draw and alerting me whenever the broken identification system thinks I'm right. The border turns blue too for some reason. I hope LearnJapanese will become more simple and functional soon.

Amazing 👌🏻

Great way to learn vocabulary and kanji, you can use this apps creators other app called “kana” to learn your kana before coming here to learn or relearn vocabulary as well as kanji and the SRS feature makes it all great and well managed so that you know what you got to do and when to do it. I would also love if a black background just like in the “kana” app was added since I really dislike the blue and red backgrounds.

Still hoping the black backgrounds be added for the menu or main screen, besides that the new update make LearnJapanese even better for if you use writing of Kana and kanji

Perfection

Just like all their other apps, this one is an absolute perfect hit for Japanese learners. The one bad thing I could possibly think of is the fact that it is free, but that means you have no reason at all not to download (and never delete) LearnJapanese that many more people deserve to know about.

Edit - I did a bit more with LearnJapanese and would love to support you with buying pro but I hate subscriptions so is there any way you could make one (albeit more pricy) lifetime pro?

Edit 2 - Thank you developers so much for the lifetime offer! I really appreciate it

The skeleton of a great app

So I really like the quizzes, the dictionary is a bit lacking in search features but is functional, and LearnJapanese is pretty helpful sometimes. Unfortunately there are many things that need polishing. The voices are very robotic and hard to understand, and the UI isn’t very friendly, at least as of now (it took me 10 minutes to find the vocab quizzes which are, as far as I know, the main piece of LearnJapanese. There may still be more features I have yet to find). However, considering that LearnJapanese is very new, I think it has a lot of potential to be one of the best, and that’s why I give it 4 stars.

Great App So Far, Would Prefer Lifetime Subscription

I like LearnJapanese a lot so far, and enjoyed their Kana app a lot as well. SRS is certainly the most effective way of learning most things and Kanji is certainly no exception.

My only wish is for a lifetime subscription, at least for us early adopters. I’m generally not a fan of subscription software especially when there are plenty of SRS alternatives at a fixed price and even free (such as Anki, which is both depending on if you use the mobile app or desktop). While I like that this is optimized specifically for Kanji, it’s not, to my knowledge, providing any online functionality that merits a perpetual maintenance fee. And not a terribly small one at that.

Helps with memorization and writing skills

I used the previous app, which focused on kana, but switched to this one to use it for kana, kanji, and vocab.

Flashcards are great, I like that it can switch it up from multiple choice, typing in the correct romaji, and writing the actual characters. Very nice to have that widespread focus so you feel like you really are learning and retaining the words and characters.

I haven’t gotten very far as of yet, but it has helped me review the kana I know and solidify them. I know a few kanji and already, LearnJapanese is helpful in terms of not lugging around hundreds of physical cards to study. Vocab is coming too, as I get more kanji under my belt.

All around, convenient, fast and responsive, and very helpful with reminders and multiple ways of presenting the material. Highly rated.

Great Flashcard App!

The interface is slightly confusing at first but once you figure it out, LearnJapanese is an amazing tool that even has a widget so you remember to check in and study. Anything relating to Japanese text is covered in this, though I use it specifically for kanji. I would give LearnJapanese a 5 star review, but there are a couple essential features I feel it is lacking:
- the ability to add your own text to the flashcards for mnemonic or memory purposes
- the ability to create lists and study specifically those lists without it affecting the big stack’s SRS data.
- data sync between devices under the same account

Great study method for kanji, could be better

I’m really enjoying the flash card and quiz format for writing kanji—it’s challenging, but I’m retaining information better. However, the pronunciations are terrible, and some even sound so robotic or choppy/scratchy. Most importantly, the readings/pronunciations study/quiz format could be loads better. Lots of kanji has both onyomi and kunyomi, but even if you only get one right using hiragana or katakana, it’s marked as correct. I think it would be much more accurate to include two typing options for kunyomi and onyomi, and then have us type them separately and accurately.

Very good for a free Kanji app.

I don’t know how many Kanji are included in just the free version, but it might be the full standard 2100 Kanji. The flash cards are fast paced and you learn the meanings and the readings. Even though it already has some form of this outside the flash cards, something that might be really cool, even if only in the paid version, would be writing out the kanji as part of the quizzes/flash cards. One poor thing I noticed is they may let you do unlimited quizzes on your first day of downloading so you give a good review.

Outstanding!!!

I’ve been studying Japanese for 30+ years. I’m conversationally fluent but I let my kanji study lapse for a long time. I recently moved to Tokyo and decided that I wanted to become literate within a year. I’ve tried a number of apps for studying kanji and this one is the best I’ve found.

One of the things that makes it great that few if any other apps have is that it allows you to create your own lists of words or kanji and then allows you to study just those.

I also really like that it allows you to study in both directions - English to Japanese and vice versa. Again, not many apps allow that.

I signed up for the lifetime Pro within about an hour of using LearnJapanese. Highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about studying Japanese language and Kanji. Nicely done!

Perfect for drilling kanji!!

I very recently started Japanese and came from the Kana app. LearnJapanese is really really good and I’ve been playing around with the beta a bit to start learning kanji, but I was wondering if there was a way to import what was learned from the kana app so that it can show up in my progress?
Other than that, thank you for developing such a great app! This will definitely be an essential part towards me learning Japanese. :)

An App Above All

I have been looking everywhere for apps that would be a good studying tool, in addition to some other apps I am using. LearnJapanese makes studying fun and addictive. The UI is beautiful, and easy to use. Not to mention that it’s FREE! If you need a studying tool for Japanese, then this is what your looking for. I would also recommend using Imiwa (a comprehensive dictionary) and sensei. (a guide to Japanese grammar) Have a good day!

Great App to keep you up to date in your learn

There are many Apps on ios about learning Japanese, but very few of them are focused on how you, as an individual, learn.

With the custom quizzes, customizable SRS (similar to Anki), multiple types of questions (do you learn better being tested with multiple choice? Typing? Writing?) and a massive vocab list, Romain Pellen has something really special here.

I highly suggest getting LearnJapanese if you have tried to learn Japanese but found it difficult to get into a habit of it, or if you are curious about charting your own personal journey.

Best of luck to you, curious learner, and many thanks to Romain for all the hard work in getting LearnJapanese together. May the future be bright!

Great app!!!

I’ve been looking for some good apps to help with my Kanji so I can prepare for JLPT and LearnJapanese is great. :) It runs smooth and allows you to see Kanji divided by JLPT and/or school level. It’s very informative by showing the different readings, stroke order, and pronunciations for characters and also has a flash card function. I use it every time I study and it has been a huge help! :)

Great so far

From first look and a day of use, I have to say I really like LearnJapanese! It’s very well designed and it gives you quite a bit of freedom. I haven’t gotten the PRO version yet but it mostly depends on this. Would I be able to add my own vocab once I get PRO? I don’t want to be limited by the set vocab and levels assigned by LearnJapanese . I think if you could add that as a feature, LearnJapanese would be more robust than any other out there!

By

Great so far

The old kana app’s biggest downside was you had to create your own sets to quiz/drill (no guidance).

This algorithmic training feature seems really cool and might be the perfect fix for that. LearnJapanese seems to just improve upon one of the cleanest, most useful apps I’ve ever seen. I got the paid subscription right away, if nothing else just to support this dev.

Highest potential Japanese app on the store

Overall review 10/10 - Normally I never write reviews, but for LearnJapanese I was so impressed that I needed to. LearnJapanese after small changes to the UI, changes for the pronunciation and other small improvements (such as kana data transfer to Benkyō) will be one of the best apps for Japanese. Keep on having updates!

Best japanese study app

LearnJapanese is absolutely great, I’ve used the Kana app (same developer) for some 10 months and that app helped me get through hiragana and katakana way faster and easier. Now I’m studying N5 and N4 kanji, together with vocabulary and LearnJapanese is great. The AI knows what kanjis and vocabulary I struggle with the most, so it makes me practice it. Great app overall, totally recommend it!!

By

Nearly there for me

This almost became my replacement for Anki. LearnJapanese is phenomenal for being mostly free and I tip my hat to the developer for creating such a wonderful tool for learning. Had LearnJapanese had a native level speaker to say the readings out loud, ways to import your own cards, and a way to learn the pitch accent of each word, I would give this a full 5 stars and gladly pay for the lifetime membership on top of a donation.

Some issues, but overall great!

This is the best app I’ve found for learning kanji and vocab, the different quiz settings are great for pacing and review. There are a couple issues in that some of the pronunciation audio clips are distorted, and deselecting all vocab options in the custom quiz will actually include all vocab instead of none. If these were fixed I think LearnJapanese would be pretty much perfect though!

By

This developers listens!

You can contact the developer and he will always listen and make changes!

Nice and clean app

However, it would be nice to have a feature in the window were all the kanji’s are displayed that will allow you to see which ones you already master (like the MANABI READER app).
I guess you could create a list, but visually it is not the same.
If it wasn’t for this I would have bought this right away

By

Love it!!

LearnJapanese allows me to practice kanji and stroke order properly. It tells me how to properly pronounce the kanji + it has quizzes and other resources.

Im tired of these monthly subscriptions

Pls add an option for a one time purchase

Best Japanese learning app available

I have used several of the apps created by this developer and this is hands down the best of all of them. This is especially astounding considering I considered those to be fantastic apps as well.

This combines kanji, kana, and massive lists of vocabulary into one app which makes it easy for me to track my progress. This also doesn’t consider how easy LearnJapanese is to use. With a simple UX it is never difficult to move around LearnJapanese even if you’re not used to it as of yet.

As for some things I would love to see in the future:

1. Addition of a more thorough dictionary for vocabulary. It would be great to have example sentences, common use cases, special notes, etc for words. I have seen other apps crowd source this by allowing users to submit these features but whatever could make that happen would be amazing.

2. App privacy modifications. From the self-reported privacy statement, LearnJapanese is leaps and bounds ahead of others. However, when looking at the privacy policy written by the developer firebase as well as google services are used. I can understand why those APIs would be preferable for ease of use and common libraries but it is in the best interest of users to attempt to avoid them. This may not be noticed by everyone but it would be appreciated given the fact that despite the possible benevolence of LearnJapanese’s developer, it is not known exactly how the other’s will handle things even with small amounts of information. Looking at your Facebook.

Overall, would recommend this to anyone. Makes learning fun and easy for really any age. Thanks =)
