Quip Toothbrush

So I got this as a gift back around Thanksgiving time and just now getting to use it for the first time and I have to say is very simple Yep very efficient I love the material the bristles are made of and the fact that it’s a smart toothbrush and helps me track my brushing but even more importantly reward you for doing a good job. This is super awesome considering you’re supposed to brush your teeth anyways so getting rewarded for doing something you’re supposed to do is always nice and gives people incentive to keep up with her hygiene. I have read a few reviews on it where they say the getting your brush to connect to your phone is hard so I will edit this review if that is the case but so far so good.

Faulty

I love this app and I’ve been using it for a little under a year. However, I got the smart toothbrush, to save some money on special gifts and rewards but quip doesn’t work. Literally at all. I brush my teeth everyday, morning and night, until my toothbrush turns off but quip has only picked up one day. I’ve had this toothbrush for about a week now. I don’t want to regret this decision, but it’s frustrating how faulty quip is. We should be able to set the time we wake up and go to sleep so quip can calculate around the time we would brush our teeth or something. I’m really disappointed because I didn’t expect it to be this difficult.

Edit:
I’ve been using the toothbrush for about a week now and it works better after I keep quip open while brushing. It’s just a little misleading because quip says that’s not required but it lowkey is lol. After leaving quip open while brushing, quip loaded my other previous brushing that wasn’t first reported. So basically keep quip open when you start brushing.

Quip Smart Brush

As someone who’s embarrassingly not good a keeping up with brushing and flossing their teeth, let me tell you the this app line of products is amazing. I really like that the smart brush tracks how you actually brush your teeth. I’ve also been looking for a reusable floss pick for so long! I definitely recommend all/any of their products. Also, not having to go to the store for refills on toothpaste/mouthwash is a bonus. Plus their toothpaste/mouthwash is vegan friendly which is awesome!

Downhill

I have used this app for almost a year now, and I keep hitting more and more obstacles with this company. The refill subscription ended up being useless, since the package for my replacement brush head shipped and then magically disappeared. I emailed customer support and all they did was blame Covid and did not issue a refund. I canceled my subscription and just figured I’d go to my local store that had the replacements and do that every time, but I’m disappointed with the functionality of quip as well. quip is forever stuck calculating my points. I haven’t known how many points I have for quite a while now, and I’m pretty sick of hoping for it to finally work someday. I’m ready to just delete this entire account and just use the toothbrush alone at this point. It’s more annoying than anything else, and I have points I can’t access. Very disappointing.

Disappointed in smart technology

I’ve been a this app user for well over a year now and absolutely love the brush and the automatic refills. I figured that I may as well upgrade and get the smart motor technology and earn some rewards while brushing because, well, who doesn’t love simple rewards!

Unfortunately, in the 6 months that I have had this new app and motor, I have struggled getting them to sync. The first week or so, there were no problems and everything seemed great. Now, I can no longer get them to sync. I have tried “hard closing” quip and reopening it, manually syncing it, and dragging down on the Home Screen. To no avail. This is incredibly frustrating and has me regretting the decision to “upgrade” the brush.

I have also noticed that the battery does not last with this new smart motor. I am paying for the automatic refills, which include the battery, and have noticed that the battery is dying about 2 weeks before the refill is due to ship. I understand that a smart motor trying to sync will eat up the battery life, but my brush isn’t even syncing anymore.

The only reason I gave 2 stars is because I love the brush, the review is for the smart motor and app. This review was posted about a week after my last refill arrived.

Works great! Briefly.

The brush, itself, is great. The pulse every 30 seconds really helps to ensure proper brushing. But quip is a joke. After having my brush for 2 months, it started getting erratic with syncing to quip . The time stamps would be WAY off - often by more than 12 hours. It would usually show my nightly brush as happening only a few minutes after my morning brush. I complained to this app, and they sent me a replacement brush, the entire time implying that I was lying. The replacement brush worked great, again, for about 2 months. Today, I saw that my brush from last night is listed for a few minutes after my brush yesterday morning. It’s happening all over again. Get your act together, this app.

Edit February 2022: The brush is no longer vibrating even with a fresh battery. The brush is only 8 months old. I’ve ordered a Sonicare and can’t wait to put this this app fiasco behind me.

Bluetooth trouble

I got the smart brush about a year ago, however it doesn’t pair when using Bluetooth. The package clearly said “smart brush” and inside had the instructions on how to pair the brush along with other things. I saw that other reviewers here using the smart brush also had the same trouble so maybe it was an app issue because I couldn’t access the actual app without pairing the brush first. I decided to wait on it for months to see if the people behind this app would update quip and fix the bugs. It seems like they did and people are suddenly seeing the brush finally being paired. However, I’m still not able to pair my brush. Now I’m just thinking my brush’s Bluetooth doesn’t function or that my package contained an electric brush instead of the smart brush like I purchased. Either way, I tried to make it work but it’s clearly not worth it.

Bought to help teach the kids

I bought two of the kids brushes with the replaceable Bluetooth packs to gather some data that I could share with them on their brushing. The lack of colors in the built-in model pushed me to the current solution.

I sit next to them while they brush and time them with my watch. I was hoping this would save me the effort. However, I have tons of holes in the data. quip says it is synced but I have maybe one brush activity recorded between the two of them across two days. Oddly, if I immediately turn the brush on it syncs and records the activity. Which makes the data collection problem extra-frustrating.

This is also compounded by inconsistent point calculation. When I start quip or sync manually, I might get different values.

I also struggle sometimes to get it to sync. While troubleshooting data collection earlier tonight, I tried to sync one brush that reported it had last synced yesterday. I wasn’t able to sync it no matter what I tried (app closure; refresh icon; swipe down). It was only when I turned it on briefly did it sync. This was all about 2m after my child finished brushing. It still has no knowledge of that 2m brushing activity.

Great at first

I loved the idea of this. I needed something to keep more accountable for brushing my teeth more regularly. The built in ‘reward’ system was awesome for the first month. I really appreciate seeing the feedback on my brushing techniques. After about a month the bluetooth wasn’t working. I unistalled and reinstalled. Turned the bluetooth on and off multiple times. Turned my phone on and off. I did everything I could think of plus whatever tips I saw online. All my other bluetooth devices stay to my phone. this app toothbrush will connect but then disconnected before my two minute brushing time is up. It doesn’t save any data because it got cut off. Its a real bummer because I was doing so good with starting a good habit with this system in place.

App is a silly gimmick - limited usefulness

I understand the idea behind a Bluetooth motor that syncs to an app so you can track how often/well you brush. However, even after many updates, it still takes several MINUTES to sync quip , every time I open it. I used to check daily but this waiting to sync became so annoying that I now check only about once a month.

The “incentives” to brush for the full 2min, twice a day are absurd. Let’s put it this way, the this app incentives don’t even come close to incentivizing me to wait for quip to sync more often than once a month so — naturally, they’re doing nothing at all to incentivize me actually brushing as I should. I do that on my own.

The upsale to the Bluetooth motor and app are not worth it.

Won’t pair

Toothbrush won’t pair and I bought to see if quip could help me track my habits. I have a tendency to bite my toothbrush while brushing my teeth so dentist recommended I get an electric toothbrush to see if the vibrations distract me from biting. But won’t pair so I can’t keep track and see if the advantage of the vibration…. No one tells you, you need to turn location on for it pair up. But on iPhone doesn’t even show in location settings. Says in the Bluetooth section of the location of privacy but doesn’t on the syncing of Bluetooth nor even show I have a toothbrush on quip itself. So returning immediately, how disappointing

Almost Amazing

I have a really hard time brushing my teeth, and this app has helped me get back on track with oral care. It’s so great to have an app that congratulates and encourages you to take better care of your mouth. My only qualm (though rather substantial) is that the streak appears to reset after 7 days. I think I would be much more enthusiastic about brushing if it kept going as much as I did (ex: “30 days! a whole month!”) But if you have a hard time remembering (or being motivated) to brush your teeth, this is the best app ever to help you get back in the game.

By

Love the program, not app so much

I love this app so far and have had one of my refills already. However, quip is quite buggy. My “calculating points” spins forever and never gives me a score. Sometimes, despite brushing for two minutes per session and twice a day, quip breaks my “brush streaks” for no discernible reasons. When contacting support, it goes into my email app instead of sending from quip , so unless I remember to send from my email used to set up this app, support refuses to help me until I resend from the right account. That is silly. I should be able to identify from any number of ways beside that.

Disappointed

I've been using this for a few months now, and the last 2 updates to quip have been nothing but frustrating and disappointing. I had many days where I spent more time getting the brush to turn on and connect than brushing my teeth, which defeats the purpose of quip and brush. It fails to record 3-4 out of 7 days of the week, the brush time is pretty off, and often the brush stops working mid brushing. I purchased this app because it was very affordable and seen a lot of good reviews. However, now I'm considering canceling my subscription and search for another smart toothbrush. The issue is not worth saving a few dollars for.

I want to love it

quip works great… when it works. 90% of the time quip WILL NOT WORK, when open or not. You 100% have to open quip while your brushing, and even then. My last brush recorded was JANUARY and I’m writing this in May. I want it to work without the step of opening an app, waiting for the brush to connect, THEN brushing my teeth. If the brush is on while I’m waiting for it to connect, it will count it as a session, even while just… waiting to connect. If I turn it off and then start again with my brush it’s a weird second session. Annoyed as I like to track everything.

Love The Whole Quip System!!

I love this product and the whole system! It’s so nice having my refills just show up to my door every three months and how I can earn points in quip that can be used as credit, and all I have to do is just log my brushing morning and night! Definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone, it is affordable, environmentally friendly, and it just helps you stay in a routine of amazing oral care!

Fixed HealthKit Issue

I left a review noting that the HealthKit integration isn’t working, and the developer got back pretty quick notifying me that the latest update fixes the issue. I downloaded it and it’s fixed.

It’s a pretty good app and I like simple data it shows from your last brush. I docked one star because syncing isn’t “magical.” Maybe it’s not quip , but I always have to wait a while for quip to get the latest brush info when it’s right next to my phone. Other than that, quip is awesome.

By

I like it but could fix issues

Doesn’t sync up to my time zone so will count some brushes as next day brushes. This is unfortunate when you’re trying to accumulate this app points and doing 2 brushes a day. Has trouble staying connected via Bluetooth with my iPhone. Have to reconnect to update my this app points. quip has missed recording some brushes all together. I like the look and feel of the brush (I have the matte black finish). I enjoy the 30 second notification to move to another part of the mouth. The sticky part on the toothbrush holder holds firm on my bathroom mirror.

Beat app ever

I am so pleased with the this app app it’s easy to use and most of all FUN to use!!! My teeth feel good and I feel good using the this app app every day after I brush my teeth (twice a day ofc thanks to this app) with the point system I love brushing my teeth seeing the points go up feels great not to mention my teeth love being clean it’s a win win with this app. Thank you to H3H3 for introducing me to this app ✌️❤️✌️

It works! ...mostly

Firstly, I'll start off by saying I love the product line this app has to offer. I recently purchased the all black metal this app smart-brush. It feels nice to use, and their watermelon toothpaste is great for anyone looking for something a little less harsh than the standard mint. The only thing preventing me from giving quip five stars is quip usage itself. It tracks most of the data fine, but will sometimes not track intensity at all, despite how "intense" I brush my teeth.

By

Very flawed app

I’ll echo what others have already said - for an app this simple (it essentially just logs brushes) there continue to be numerous bugs/delays - quip does not always sync smoothly and I often have to turn off and on the brush numerous times before I see my last “real” brush reflected. Not sure if this is an issue with quip or the Bluetooth motor itself.

Also, as others have said, requiring each day’s two brushes to be within a midnight-to-midnight 24 hours is very dumb and annoying - sometimes I brush my teeth before midnight and sometimes after, but each time my schedule changes even slightly my streak is ruined. Why not allow the user to set the start/end time for each day, or set it at a more reasonable hour (e.g. 2 am, which would allow late brushers to still have their brushes counted for the previous day and wouldn’t get in the way of those who may brush when they wake up very early in the morning).

Hopefully they continue to improve the product as right now it’s more aggravating than helpful.

Terrible app, terrible brush

Let me start by saying that this is a good idea. The concept is great! Gamify oral health! I was totally on board and shelled out to upgrade my existing this app (which has already given me multiple issues, btw) to the smart motor. What an absolute waste of money.

Somehow the smart motor this app works even WORSE than the regular motor (which wasn’t great to begin with)—turns off mid-brush at the slightest provocation and rarely completes a full 2-minute brush session. My normal this app already had these problems, so I guess I was a fool for thinking the upgraded motor would solve these serious design flaws.

And on to quip —I echo what other users say about connectivity issues. Getting it to pair with my brush was a pain, and getting it to update even more so. The data on which quadrants of the mouth you’re brushing is just straight up wrong—they need a total redesign of that feature. And I cannot get quip to sync for the life of me. I can pair and re-pair my brush and still only get 2 out of every 10 brush sessions to even register on this thing.

Overall, I get that parts of it are in beta, but don’t roll it out, tout its functionality, and charge a ton for an “upgraded” motor when none of this reliably work. The entire app/smartbrush experience has really soured me towards this app as a brand—their marketing is sleek, but that actual products are, in my experience over the past year or so, terrible.

Buggy app that had one job

UPDATE: this app claims the issues here no longer plague quip . Shocker: it’s still buggy as heck. I haven’t been signed out since I wrote this, but the brush still has had issues syncing. This is ridiculous.

quip is a glorified data logging app. Granted, it does a pretty good job of holding onto the data once it ingests it, but I’m guessing that’s mainly due to Apple Health. Unfortunately though, quip is just buggy as all all hell and a couple of things prevent me from having a constant brushing streak despite brushing twice a day every day:

1. The brush and app don’t sync automatically even if I’m starting brushing with quip open and ending with quip open. I have to manually sync the two. If quip did nothing else, it should do this right.

2. I get signed out ALL THE TIME. Something something auth tokens not getting refreshed something something?

3. (This is probably the one that bothers me most:) Some people happen to go to bed before midnight some nights and after midnight on others. Believe it or not, the waking day is not entirely correlated with a calendar day. And when oral health professionals recommend brushing twice daily, I don’t think they mean twice every calendar day. Despite this, quip tracks brushing streaks as if one and the other are the same which is freaking ridiculous.

App Never Syncs

I’ve never written a review on quip Store, but quip experience is TERRIBLE. Since day 1, I’ve been having issues with getting my data to sync. I just finished my morning brush and the last time my app gathered data was OCTOBER 9. ITS BEEN ALMOST A MONTH. My brush shows the green ‘connected’ circle, it says ‘Last Synced’ with today’s date and the correct time, but yet - quip doesn’t think I’ve brushed yet.

I’ve already emailed the this app team TWICE about this same issue and their response is always ‘delete quip and reinstall’........... am I supposed to delete quip every time I brush my teeth? Because that’s excessive. I think the better solution here is to develop an app THAT WORKS. Stop putting the onus on the consumer and start doing your job. There’s no way you have releases as often as you do and you never fix the actual issue at hand. If that’s the case, you need a new product manager/scrum master.

Inconsistent af

As soon as I purchased and installed the new Bluetooth insert my brush doesn’t want to start vibrating. I have to hit it or open it up pull out the insert and the battery then put both back in, then hold down the Bluetooth insert until it vibrates. Then put the bristle head back on and then it’s still hot or miss if it will start. quip itself is irritatingly buggy. It doesn’t always retain the brush. I’ve noticed I have to have my phone with me on in quip before I start and keep the phone and app awake the entire time. Sometimes that doesn’t work either like this morning. I usually delete quip and reinstall and sometimes that will give me the points. But just sometimes. You have a beautiful product. The all matte black makes me want to brush my teeth all the time. But this new Bluetooth and app thing have made it frustrating.

Works Well!!! A few improvement could be made

When I read the reviews for quip, I got nervous that I had wasted $60. quip works just fine for me, and I love using this toothbrush instead of my Oral B. A couple of suggestions, one it would be nice if he could set our brush to run longer than 2 minutes. This morning I had to turn the brush back on and keep brushing, and quip counts it as a separate brush. Another thing would be if we could delete brushes, maybe you accidentally turned the brush on or in my case, have to brush your retainer. It counts it as a brush when I wasn’t brushing my teeth. Other than that, I’m really enjoying this toothbrush!

By

Very Buggy

I've been using this app for about a year. I previously had the basic $25 toothbrush but wanted to upgrade to their new bluetooth toothbrush because it sounded like a cool concept. Pairing the toothbrush to my phone went fine and it syncs my brushes accurately, but it's CONSTANTLY on the "calculating..." screen when i open quip .
I bought this toothbrush because I wanted more insight on my brushing, and the fact that i can't see any of my "stats" for each brush is so annoying. My rewards screen also doesn't work even though i've allegedly earned 5 points already.
I'm extremely surprised that this app is not trying harder to fix their app when it's obvious so many customers aren't getting what they purchased. I wouldn't have bought this expensive toothbrush if it wasn't going to genuinely work. Do better this app.

By

Getting better!!

Can’t lie to you quip wasn’t the best and same with my this app Smart Motor. After a few updates from both and app and the hardware it has gotten so much better! Before it wouldn’t log my data and I was left wondering how I did on my previous brushes now it will log my data but every now and then I’ll be on a few day brushing streak and for whatever reason it won’t log my most recent tooth brushing session. Anyway I’m hopeful that the developers will continue to work on quip and make continue to improvements smart motor itself. quip is great and it’s getting better but still has a looooong way to go!

By

Lacks notifications. Buggy.

I feel the huge miss on quip and what should be the core functionality is interactive and smart notifications. Should be similar to Apple watches activity or breathe notifications. Encourage missed brushing and opportunities after meals with smart notifications. Bring the awards and progress updates to notifications and Apple Watch and you will see more functionality and real world use. Also quip still features the daily bug or two which is unfortunate.

By

Cool when it works, which isn’t often.

I’ve been a longtime this app subscriber and have really felt like it’s been a great way of setting good habits, but I’m kind of starting to feel embarrassed that I spent so much money on the smart motor at this point. My brush frequently disconnects for no reason, if it connects at all, despite having quip open on the counter right in front of me while I brush. My most recent brush is reading a measly 20 second duration, despite me brushing for the full 2 minutes, because for whatever reason the brush just won’t stay connected. I love this app and while this isn’t enough for me to cancel my subscription, it’s certainly going to make me think twice about jumping on board with whatever gimmick they think up next.

By

Embarrassing

I can’t believe I spent so much money with this. I usually try something out for about a week before writing a review. But I’ve had this thing for two days and it’s so difficult to work with.
I love the toothbrush itself. Although sometimes it has problems connecting to my phone, I would give it a solid 4/5.
quip is a completely different story. It will tell me the time I spent brushing my teeth, but it has STILL not calculated anything else - including the coverage, strokes, and intensity. Not to mention I can’t even see the rewards I was promised in exchange for points - on the rare occasion that I actually get them.
Personally, I would be humiliated to release an app with this many problems. This is embarrassing. What’s even worse is I paid $85 for an unfinished product.

By

An app so bad I cancelled my account

I upgraded to the Smart Toothbrush in October and not only was I never able to get the motor and app to sync properly, but the back and forth with this app constantly sending wanting to send me replacements (that also wouldn't work) drove away my business after subscribing for years.

I won't rehash the various issues others have raised here, but holy cow is quip a failure. Something that should be simple to set up and even fun to manage is so riddled with showstopping bugs that it should be withdrawn from the market until it's ready for prime time.

If you're a satisfied this app customer and are thinking about upgrading to the Smart Motor: DON'T. It is a waste of money and unbelievably - and apparently insurmountably - frustrating.

🔥 Love seeing my brushing streak!

I’m overly obsessive about tracking as many things in my life as possible–and now that includes brushing! Currently I’m on a five day streak and I will do ANYTHING not to break it.

Having my brushes sync to quip helps keep me accountable and hey! maybe I’ll get some sweet rewards for all the good I’m doing my teeth 😎

I’ve had some issues with staying logged in but as all the data still syncs and updates I’m not too concerned... just excited to see what else is coming.

By

Streak rules are silly

As others have pointed out, you shouldn’t lose your streak for brushing your teeth after midnight. Lots of people sometimes go to bed before and after midnight. Just make the rule to brush twice within a 24-hour period. My headspace app doesn’t lose my streak when I meditate one morning, and then the next day’s evening. Their window is even broader, though that is just one instance a day to keep the streak. Twice every 24 hours should cover everyone brushing twice a day, regardless of bed and wake times.

By

Inconsistent, and midnight is not the start of a day

I’ve found they if I don’t make an effort to sync,
I lose brushes.
The biggest issue I have is that quip assumes bedtime comes before midnight, and for those of us who stay up late, it throws off all calculations , streaks, and points. We should be able to identify the end of our day to avoid this problem. Sometimes bedtime is earlier. Solve this problem. It shouldn’t be that hard. I won’t be recommending this product because of these kinds of problems. I’m basically tracking the tracking, and points don’t accumulate.
