Historical records—like immigration papers and birth certificates—can help people learn interesting and valuable insights about their family. Problem is, many of those insights are locked away in documents that are not easily searchable. FamilySearch Get Involved provides simple tools to unlock the family names in those documents so they can be searched online for free. How it works FamilySearch uses sophisticated scanning technology to find ancestor names in historical records. Most of the time the computer can recognize the correct name. But it can’t always get it right. Using FamilySearch Get Involved, anyone can quickly review names in historical records and verify what the computer found or flag any errors. Each name that gets corrected is a person that can now be found by their living family. • Help people find their ancestors online. • Focus on a country that is important to you. • Give back to the genealogy community. • Use spare time in a meaningful way. Even correcting just one name makes a big difference. The names you will see in the Get Involved app are real people that have been lost to history until now. With your help, these people can be reunited with their family across generations.

This app allows you to get involved with the effort to index records conveniently on your phone. I like to index on my computer, and have tried doing it on my phone using the family search website and it’s just not very feasible. But this app simplifies the process and makes it easy to do from your phone!

I like this new app for doing indexing of old records. It is amazing how good the computer is at reading this old handwriting, but it is not perfect, so they still need humans to check it. This app makes it quick and keeps it simple. I really got addicted fast and couldn’t stop. It felt like I was doing something useful in just one or two minutes.

I was skeptical that technology could actually read 19th-century cursive, but was pleasantly surprised. I’ve run through at least 100 names so far just to get an idea of how well it worked, and so far so good. Two issues to raise, though: 1. When I edit a name, there’s no way to ensure that my edits are saved. No button, no “save” indicator of any kind. I made some significant edits, but did they take? Let your users know what’s going on, please. 2. I wish there were a way I could flag the name of the parish priest; his name shows up on every page and doesn’t need to, and that’s a lot of extra temple work. I’ll keep using this and adjust my rating accordingly.

So glad this exists! Can’t give feedback via the app because it keeps telling me to set up an email. Except I’m connected via my LDS account, so I’m confused. I wish that I could start typing, then pause to scroll around the record, then go back to typing. It erases what I’m working on each time which is annoying.
