This app helps one get a lot done on the iPad (or iPhone) that wouldn't be possible otherwise---even the free version. Paying a subscription has been worth it too. You just have to try it to see how it might be useful to you personally and if that justifies the price. I do less with the tag and workspace features than I perhaps could because I tend to use Bear for reference. Fortunately, there are users who know how to script and have come up with actions to make Drafts play well with Bear. Ditto other apps, including email. In the end, Drafts is kind of like a work environment in which one can begin all work with text. It's also good for cleaning up text from other sources. I have loved this app through several versions. One reason, I suspect, is because it continues to test the boundaries of what is possible in iOS. And one can actually customize one's work environment a bit. In other words, the app takes both the operating system and the user seriously. The subscription model has also led to a viable business plan, it seems, whereas I've seen other solid apps go neglected or get killed off for lack of ongoing funding and attention in a constantly changing computing environment and app market.
Ok first of all I never write reviews, but using this app on a trial run today absolutely blew my mind and I’m not even touching a fraction of the full capability! To be honest when I first downloaded it I was thinking there’s no way I’m going to pay for a subscription. I mean what the heck can this thing do that my other note taking apps can’t do. Let me say this immediately changed after messing around with this for a bit. The Watch OS takes this app and getting things out of your head to a whole different level. I mean record anything out of your head and then share it with Omnifocus, Awesome Note or whatever else you may want to do with it! Also one tap and it starts the dictation so from thought to app is seem less. I went from thinking this app was absolutely useless and literally about to delete, but now I can say it will be an app to stay! When my trial subscription ends I will gladly pay the $20/year. I will make this over 100 fold with the time I save and the ideas I’m able to preserve and act on! Thank you!!
I’ve tried hundreds of app and like about 10 so I guess I’m picky. This app is my all time favorite. I can’t believe what a powerful and simple app the free version is. It’s so good, I felt guilty using it for free so much that I signed up for the Mac version I didn’t even need just to get the amazing developer some money. This app in a simple but powerful way quickly became the notepad for jotting down anything that comes to mind for me that I’ve been looking for for a very long time. These quick notes are synced between all my devices so I can turn them into email messages, notepad docs, spreadsheets, or other work and joke things when I can focus on them. It’s streamlined and organised my life in a way that is almost given up on finding. Everything I’m thinking of and working on is always with me and I can pull it up and add to it until it’s to a useable state. Thank you! This app is perfection!
I imagine that if you only write a few notes here and there then this app is not your thing. You won't "get it" and you don't need it. If all you need is an occasional note use Notepad. If what you need is formatting for publishing a dissertation you will probably prefer Word. This is a tool for users who are very involved in creating text. It has feature rich set of actions for processing the text. Formatting is supported through Markdown (including end notes, hyperlinks etc.) and integration is supported with a rich URL scheme and with Siri Shortcuts app. It has a huge suite of actions for processing the text. Actions are very customizable and extensible. The extensibility includes the ability to write JavaScript that can process the text to your unique specification. Templates are a strong suit of this app. But I am not a user so look for others to comment.
$20/year will be worth it when there is an Mac app. Until then I’ll be happy to stick with 4. I’ve tried out 5 now and, so far, don’t see any benefit to my workflow. The first thing I noticed is that it doesn’t start up any faster than 4 on my iPad Pro. And then there are awful skeuomorphic drop shadows on the keyboard buttons. Seriously? And Drafts 5 doesn’t work nicely with Drafts 4, requiring you to import all of your documents. So you can’t really test it out fully without getting locked into 5 (or at least making a big mess as you get all your new stuff back into 4). Again, when a Mac app comes along (that, of course, only works with Drafts 5) I’ll likely make the plunge. But like others I’m getting sick and tired of apps that go the subscription route with promises of good things to come, but then hardly deliver (Day One, Ulysses). And putting basic usability features like a dark mode as part of the ‘pro’ level is a slimy business practice. The developer should really rethink this point. I don’t mind paying every year for software I use all the time, but the big jump in price just isn’t warranted at this point. The vague mention on the website of a possible Mac app some time in the future isn’t enough to make me front them the money.
