IKEA Home smart 1 app Works with TRÅDFRI gateway It’s easy with the IKEA Home smart 1 app and TRÅDFRI gateway. Use one setting for early morning lighting and music, another for late evenings and a third for cooking or working at home. You can dim, turn off, turn on, change colours and switch from warm to cold light. Raise or lower blinds. Turn on your music – then turn it up, turn it down or pause it. And you can even control your air purifier to improve the air quality at home. With the IKEA Home smart 1 app, you can also connect to Apple Home, Amazon Alexa or Google Home and control it all with your voice. What you’ll get with the IKEA Home smart 1 app and TRÅDFRI gateway: • The ability to control your lights and blinds from the app • The ability to turn audio on and off, pause it and control volume • Customisable settings, including changing the position of blinds, light colours and choosing warm or cold light • Timers with morning and evening options • The ability to turn your air purifier on and off, and set it to a fan speed that suits the needs of your home

Latest update adds more products but now the app asks you what you want to install every couple of times you open it and there is no exit option. Only thing you can do is shut down the app. Seems like sloppy but testing. It’s really come a long way in the last year too bad they still need to do some work.

It is ridiculous homeSmart does not have Cloud Integration for remote access after several years on market or a means to provide port forwarding to be able to control Trådfri hub from app. Sonos integration is not polished and crashes a lot hence my only view is to use the Sonos app but the effort to create a Sonos integration is nice overall as it helps bring down the inflated price of Sonos. Would love a Connect device for existing stereo that did not cost $350 a pop. Lights since they are on Zigbee Light Standard are better to integrate with SmartThings/HomeAssistant or if lucky integrate with Hue app. HomeSmart needs a lot work from Ikeas software development team in my opinion to compete competitively with Hue. Also random issues with not able to connect to Hub from app although directly connected on same network. Many areas for improvement.

These lights are clearly marketed as a more affordable alternative to Phillips Hue. I’ve tried both and Hue has shortcomings of its own, not least of which is the lack of cooler tones and fewer lumens. I’m also ambivalent about both apps. I think Hue has some advantages but the widget and room schemes seem awkward. TRÅDFRI has this as well, but it feels incrementally better. The obvious areas for improvement for TRÅDFRI are HomeKit compatibility and more choices when selecting color temperatures. Once those features are added in, this will be a formidable product. I assume that since ikea is not a tech company first, they are not developing their tech products as quickly. It would be refreshing if their team was more receptive and proactive about putting these changes into action.

The TRÅDFRI system seems to work as advertised. I had some issues pairing the remote to the gateway, but once I found that *I* was the problem it went smoothly from there. The app doesn’t seem to handle switching from the background well as it frequently asks to reconnect to the gateway by scanning the barcode, but a quick closure of the app (by removing it from the app switcher) fixes that. It would be nice to have full color control instead of being locked into the presets, and adding some functionality such as syncing timers and moods with sunrise and sunset would be neat, but neither are deal breakers. I’m looking forward to HomeKit integration, which is supposedly coming soon, but all in all, I’m happy with the lights (and the app).

The app is very good at walking the user through the setup with the lights/remotes. The user defined moods are excellent ways to make your room look great! They are easy to set up and quick to use. However there is still work to be done with the timer features and improving grouping functionality. Widgets are not present which are quite important for a smart home app. Connecting to the hub when opening the app takes a few seconds, I expect it to be snappier. I also feel constricted by just 3 color temperatures, 5 would be very welcome. These are all things that I imagine IKEA is aware of, I am looking forward to the future versions of the app!!
